TAP OUR APP, FLASHERS!

Welcome to August!  That means summer is almost over and boy has it flown by! We have been BUSY BEES!  Not only have we been busy...We've been keeping a secret and now we can finally talk!  FLASH is expanding in our effort to always give you what you want and need! We love listening to you and always urge you to let us know what you like, things you aren't so crazy about and what you would like FLASH to provide...Well, we've heard you!

So, what's the big surprise? We have a few things to share! The BIG thing...We are rolling out our app this week!!! SO EXCITING! For those who don't really know what that means...not to worry...we know you are in good company! We are going to walk you through everything...You will not be left behind! Our App is the first of it's kind and the only one you will ever need to keep you up to date on what's going on! Since everyone always has their phone with them, it only makes sense to have a FLASH app that will keep you in-the-know...while on-the-go! It will include the overall calendar as well as....drum roll...14 sub calendars. That means if you want to check out events for children, you go directly to the children/camps sub calendar. You want only live music and comedy? Click on that calendar.  You excited? Well there's more! We have a coupon side with some great discounts: 10% off at places like Fishack, Pizzoodles, and Waldos. Other discounts from places like: Vinz Wining & Dining, Blue Star,  Quilted Giraffe, Grille on the Green, 14th Avenue Steakhouse, Solar Solutions, Classic Car Wash, The Habitat Restore and more. And...There are many more offerings in the works...and more going live every day! To get the discounts, all you have to do is download the app and FLASH it proudly to your server/cashier.  They want you to use it!

As in anything new...I anticipate a bump or two.  Please stay patient with us as we iron out any kinks and please let us know if you encounter a problem. Our app will continue to grow... So, I ask that you bare with us while we grow into our new shoes. Feel free to send us info! Having a garage sale? We will include it at no cost on that sub calendar. Support groups...We want to hear from you so we can list your info. If you have an idea on something we need to include..TELL US! Want your business on our app?  We want that too!  Email us! It's a good thing.

So how to get it from point 'A' to point 'B' on your phone.  Go to your app store and search for Vero Beach FLASH. Or scan the appropriate QR code below.  If scanning isn't for you. Go below to the Tech Tip of the week and there are two video links that will walk you through how to download an app.

One of the best things that happened while building the app is the fact that I have met some of the nicest business owners and entrepreneurs. I will spotlight each one at some point and my hope is that you will patronize them! Please, check them out FLASHERS! It's the small business owners that contribute so much to our unique and wonderful community. One of my favorite new friends is Tricia Allison! She developed the website Verobeachlive.com. She follows the local talent and and shares her knowledge with everyone through her fun and informative blog. We have joined forces and she will be providing a feature each week in FLASH. She is a fantastic singer and will be at Blue Star on Friday to sing a few songs. I'm going!  Which brings me to the 3rd thing I want to share. A year and a half ago we started an Adventurous FLASHERS group that got together once a month for a while.  We had close to 30 people sign up. We are going to create a similar type of group...But, this group will be 'Music Groupies'. We will try out various live music venues together. After all, everything is much more fun with friends in tow! If you are interested in joining us, shoot me an email. I'll get you on the list! Are you new in town? Join us...No strangers in this group! Have the perfect name for this group?  Send me that too. We are trying to come up with one and will give you a prize if you're the one to name it! :)  I have a funny story I will share next week.... I have already rambled on too long... So very much to share! In the meantime... Download the app FLASHERS and remember your manners...Don't forget to share - Share - SHARE! :)

Thanks!

LIVE MUSIC 'HOT-SPOT 'OF THE WEEK
sponsored by

Our first featured 'Hot Spot of the Week' is Blue Star, located at 2227 14th Avenue. It has a variety of live music Tuesday through Saturday including: blues, rock, jazz, and acoustics. This week's "Tuesday Bluesday" with guitarist Dave Scott was so 'hot' the fire department came 'en masse'  to douse the flames! (No, actually the wonderful guys were there in all their garb while the alarm was being tested.) But, the music IS hot and if you haven't yet had a meal at Blue Star, make it a point to dine there soon! You will be delighted at what Kitty and her staff can create now that she has a full sized kitchen! Did you know that Kitty came to Vero over 20 years ago as the sous-chef at the Windsor Club? The gal can cook! And she cooks up a great combination of super entertainment and great cuisine that brings in the crowd! Check out her menu and download the FLASH App to get your choice of a complimentary salad, soup or dessert with the purchase of two entrees.

THIS FRIDAY & SATURDAY

WEEKEND PROJECT

As you enjoy the last bit of summer...Plan a walk on the beach with the mission of collecting shells to create a summer keepsake. You can hot-glue shells in any design. Here it is shown in a free-form heart on repurposed wood planks. You can also have fun painting a canvas and using it as a backdrop. I created a summer keepsake with my kids years ago  by setting our summer seashell finds in cement that we laid on top of plain stepping stones. We included the year in crushed shells and each of my children created their own stone.  The no-fighting project because everyone got to use their own shell collections, their own, design, and it was 100% theirs to create!  ENJOY!

DID YOU KNOW?
The week of August 10th is the best time to book flights for Christmas and Thanksgiving. According to Sky Scanner rates are expected to be 19% cheaper! ... Another little August tidbit ... The month of August has the highest rate of births. Hmmm? Do you suppose it has anything to do with people celebrating during the holidays?

PERIWINKLES VS. IMPATIENS

Have you noticed the Periwinkles (Vinca) for sale at our local garden shops? They're every bit as colorful as Impatiens and their care is much easier. My Mom admits she's not much of a gardener, but she loves flowers in her yard. So, for Mother's day my sister and I planted several Periwinkles at her house and they are flourishing. They're her favorite because they are
easy to grow, and require little or no attention. Periwinkles, which are also known as Vinca, are prolific and will usually reseed themselves if left unattended. Periwinkles will grow in a range of light conditions, from full sun to shade and are both heat and drought tolerant. This makes them ideal in hot, dry parts of the country where other flowers will wither and wilt, but our recent rain storms haven't seemed to bother them either.  Space Vinca plants 12-15 inches apart. Water well when planting. Add a general purpose fertilizer once or twice a season and mulch around plants in dry areas to help retain soil moisture.

NEW HALLMARK HI DEF CHANNEL

If you can get it from your cable server, take a look at Hallmark's new Movies and Mysteries channel. It features new mystery shows, along with several of the 'oldies' like Hart to Hart, Perry Mason, Colombo, Murder She Wrote and Dick Van Dyke's Diagnosis Murder. Most of today's mystery shows are violent and bloody, so if you like a little lighter style, even with a little comedy, you'll enjoy these. On Comcast, it's number 468. Check with your cable company for other channel numbers.

          BACK-TO SCHOOL

Budget is not a dirty word!  At some point I believe that we have all wondered how the heck did the money from our paycheck disappear?  Making a budget is pretty easy.  Following the budget is the hard part.  To begin your budget process, write down all of your monthly bills and add an allowance for your wants.  Subtract this amount from your monthly income and that is your amount that you should save.  It should equal between 10%-20 percent of your take home pay.  You should have an emergency fund of liquid money such as cash equivalent securities or a savings account to equal 3-6 months of your monthly budget.

  TODAY'S CHUCKLE

Family Tree

The Smith's were proud of their family tradition. Their ancestors had come to America on the Mayflower. They had included Senators and Wall Street wizards. They decided to compile a family history as a legacy for their grandchildren, so they hired a fine author. Only one problem arose - how to handle great-uncle George, who was executed in the electric chair. The author said not to worry that he could handle the story tactfully.

When the book appeared,  it said "Great-uncle George occupied a chair of applied electronics at an important government institution, was attached to his position by the strongest of ties, and his death came as a great shock."

FLASH TIP OF THE WEEK

FLAVOR YOUR OWN GREEK YOGURT

Your favorite fruit flavored yogurt can have as much as 19 grams of sugar in a single serving. That's more than 4 teaspoons! If you're trying to cut back on sugar and calories, buy plain yogurt and flavor it yourself. An easy way to do this is to mix in some Smucker's Sugar-Free Preserves. They come in a variety of delicious flavors that even your kids will like.

  RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Make Ahead
Kale & Parmesan Salad with Lemon Yogurt Dressing

You'll want to use this tangy lemon and yogurt based dressing for all your future salads, but it's especially great to balance out the sometimes bitterness of kale. The longer you let this salad marinate in the fridge, the better it gets. Marinating also softens the leaves.

Serves: 4

Ingredients

Kale, leaves removed from stems - 1½ bunches

Lemon juice - 2 tbs.

Dijon mustard - 1 tsp.

Plain yogurt - 2 tbs.

Olive oil - 2 tbs.

Parmesan cheese, shaved - 2 oz.

Pine nuts - ¼ cup

Prep
  1. Kale - Tear off leaves into bite-sized pieces
  2. Dressing - Whisk together lemon juice, mustard, yogurt, some hot sauce (opt) and oil. Season to taste with salt & pepper. Toss with kale leaves. Cover and refrigerate until it's time to serve
Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees
  2. Place pine nuts on a sheet pan and toast in the oven for 3 to 5 minutes until golden brown. Give it a shake midway through
  3. Shave parmesan into kale salad (I like to use a regular vegetable peeler for this). Add in pine nuts and toss. Season to taste with salt.

Waldo Was Found
At Vero Beach Book Center

Vero Beach's Miss Hibiscus, Amanda Gard and "Live" Waldo conducted the Grand Prize give-aways at the Where's Waldo/Vero Beach party on July 31st.

Close to 150 Waldo fans attended the Grand Celebration finalizing the month long scavenger hunt among 25 Vero Beach locations.

McKee Botanical Garden is now equipped with on-site Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) thanks to a generous grant from the Indian River Community Foundation - Indian River Club Outreach Foundation Fund.

The recommendation to have AEDs at the Garden came from McKee gift shop volunteer Penny Eshleman. Penny has made it her personal crusade to promote the importance of having AEDs and proper training after a friend's life was saved. The Garden is grateful to Penny for her encouragement and desire to make a difference at McKee.

AEDs are used to treat sudden cardiac arrest, which is a leading cause of death in adults over the age of 40. AEDs can provide treatment to victims of sudden cardiac arrest until appropriate rescue personnel arrive and potentially increase an individual's chances of survival. The American Heart Association promotes having access to AEDs in public or private places where large groups gather, and McKee is pleased to be one of a growing number of businesses to have AEDs on-site.

The VNA is pleased to announce that Tracey Soethe, VNA's volunteer manager,  has been named VNA's associate of the quarter. Soethe was selected by her peers for their integrity, collaboration, accountability, respect and excellent customer service.

Soethe oversees all aspects of VNA's volunteer program, which includes nearly 400 members. She trains each volunteer who enters the program and finds a place for them within the organization. Volunteers can provide assistance in patient homes, the VNA Hospice House, at the VNA Hidden Treasure thrift stores or at the main office building. Soethe recruits year-round to help fulfill these roles. In addition to that, Soethe plans multiple public bereavement and remembrance events that take place throughout the year. She puts her own special twist on each event ensuring that it is memorable to all attendees.

The Vero Beach Christian Business Association collected an impressive assortment of school supplies at its July 23rd luncheon and donated them to Feed the Lambs Enrichment Program. Items will also be collected at the August 27th luncheon, so VBCBA members and the community are encouraged to continue taking advantage of back-to-school sales.

CAN YOU HELP FINSIH A CROCHETED BLANKET?
FROM CONNIE OWEN Reply
The mother of a friend of mine passed away nearly a year ago. Irene's mother had been crocheting a blanket that she got half way through before she passed. Prosek is known for his unusually vibrant, life size depictions that capture the beauty and vitality of our "finny friends." He prepared to paint Florida favorites such as the Snook, the Cobia and the Pompano, by making trips to the locations where these fish can be directly observed, including the Treasure Coast. "If I see my reflection in the eyeball of the fish or whatever, I'll paint that in," Prosek explains. "It's me and the fish. I've kind of described [the paintings] as self-portraits in a way." The exhibition of Prosek's paintings will on view from June 6 through September 6, 2015, in the Museum's Schumann and Titelman Galleries. For more information call: phone (772) 231-0707
