Happy 2015, Flashers!
Are the decorations down and put away? Is your household back to normal, ...and how are those New Year's resolutions working out for you the first week? I love the holidays, but when it's over...I have to admit... I feel like taking a deep breath and saying "Whew!" It's hard to believe it's 2015. Ahhh...A brand new year. No matter how much you enjoy inviting the new year on New Years Eve, we know one thing...It arrives anyway. The good news? It's the visitor with 'no baggage'! Don't ya love it? The baggage from the past can be left at the station and you have a clean slate to start anew. Who doesn't like a 'new beginning'? I LOVE IT and I never seem to tire of sticking to my resolutions that first week of the year! Ha! A new year always seems to present an opportunity for reflection. I didn't do as badly on last year's resolutions as I might have thought. I may not have lost all the weight I wanted to...But, I am down and heading in the right direction. I reconnected with six of my high school friends and we have committed to gathering at a different location every year. I discovered a new hobby...I love my kayak! Time on the river truly is an absolute treat as you can see in my picture collage. I have encountered a family of dolphin, a pod of manatee, caught fish, seen incredible scenery... My cup of joy runneth over! So, in retrospect 2014 was quite a year! I encourage you to include on your resolution list a few things that will bring you joy! Don't make it a 'chore list'...Get organized, lose weight, exercise more etc. ugh...The thought exhausts me! :) So, this year? Yes, I want to drop a few more pounds, but my 'fun' resolution is to transform my yard into an English garden! Hopefully I will have a fabulous collage to share with you by the end of the year. I also want to plan a one on one trip with each of my three children. Doesn't have to be anything grandiose... A weekend is perfect and I can't wait! Another wonderful thing about 2014 was the growth of FLASH. Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined creating what FLASH has evolved into. What a fun venture! I thank all of you who have answered our survey. I have smiled and giggled at some of your comments. Thank you for them! I love your suggestions and will be incorporating many of them. I should have included a question inviting your suggestions. My mistake, but I'll do so now. What else would you like to see on FLASH? How can we better utilize Facebook? Have an idea for a fun contest? I truly do enjoy receiving you feedback and making FLASH what you want it to be. Stay in touch in 2015 FLASHERS and email me your ideas and suggestions. verobeachflash@gmail.com. I'll be waiting for them! Enjoy your new beginning!
Thank you~

5 WAYS TO SAVE MONEY ON FOOD
If you spent a little too much last month on holiday shopping, here are some helpful savings tips!
Plan menus and cook at home.
The average household eats only 20-25 different meals 90 percent of the time. Get some index cards and jot down your favorite combinations (not recipes, but meals such as pot roast with mashed potatoes, etc.) then plan ahead and deal yourself a week's worth of menus.
Shop from a list.
There's nothing new about this tip. Study after study shows that sticking to a list reduces your overall grocery bill. For best prices on produce, shop what's in-season at the Saturday Farmers' Market!
Invest in a slow cooker.
You'll spend $20 to $40 for a good one of the size you will need for your family. First, you'll save money by creating meals from cheaper cuts of meat. Second, you'll be able to take advantage of meat sales because you'll be able to prepare bulk batches of meals to freeze. You'll also enjoy the stress-free feeling of having supper ready at the end of the day.
Don't redeem that grocery coupon unless you're positive it's a great deal.
Unless you have the time to become an extreme couponer, chances are you'll find a store brand or generic product that's cheaper than any brand-name product, even with a coupon!

DO YOU HAVE A COLD OR FLU?
Both colds and flu are caused by viruses, not bacteria, so antibiotics won't work. Obviously the flu is more dangerous than a common cold because of the possible complications that can lead to pneumonia. Your doctor will probably prescribe an anti-viral medication like Tamiflu or Relenza unless you have developed an infection. Colds can last up to a week or even longer, and flu can go on for as long as three weeks. They say you can be contagious as long as you still have symptoms. But how can you tell the difference between the two? Well, one way is that flu symptoms come on suddenly, while colds kind of creep up on you. This link has a chart to help you tell the difference. I keep a small container of wipes in my car to clean my hands after pumping gas, opening doors, etc. Stay well FLASHERS!

DID YOU KNOW?
It took Michelangelo 4 years to paint the frescoes on the elaborate ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, but it took 10 years for Leonardo Davinci to paint the Mona Lisa and that was just one woman! Do you think maybe he dragged it out because he enjoyed spending the time with her? Maybe that's why she has that famous mysterious smile! hmmm?

TODAY'S CHUCKLE
Ode To The New Year
'Twas the month after Christmas, and all through the house
Nothing would fit me, not even a blouse.
The cookies I'd nibbled, the eggnog I'd taste at the holiday parties had gone to my waist.
When I got on the scales there arose such a number! When I walked to the store (less a walk than a lumber).
I'd remember the marvelous meals I'd prepared; The gravies and sauces and beef nicely rared,
The wine and the rum balls, the bread and the cheese And the way I'd never said, 'No thank you, please.'
As I dressed myself in my husband's old shirt And prepared once again to do battle with dirt
I said to myself, as I only can 'You can't spend a winter disguised as a man!'
So - away with the last of the sour cream dip, Get rid of the fruit cake, every cracker and chip
Every last bit of food that I like must be banished 'Till all the additional ounces have vanished!'
.
I won't have a cookie - not even a lick. I'll want only to chew on a long celery stick.
I won't have hot biscuits, or corn bread, or pie, I'll munch on a carrot and quietly cry.
I'm hungry, I'm lonesome, and life is a bore But isn't that what January is for?
I'll miss all the goodies, but I simply must fight it Happy New Year to all and to all a good diet!

FLASH BEAUTY TIP OF THE WEEK Sponsored by: Center for Facial Aesthetics
Ten Beauty Resolutions for the New Year
1. Drink Water
It's not a new idea, and has been a tip for years, but many of us do not drink enough
water. If you frequently drink beverages that contain caffeine (coffee, tea and soda) or
alcohol, you may think you're quenching your thirst, but these fluids can actually
deplete the body of essential water. Water helps rid the body of toxins, pollutants and
waste that can make the body look and feel sluggish. And although it's not technically
a moisturizer, water keeps our organs healthy and functioning-including the largest
organ of the body-the skin.
2. Use Sunscreen
Even in the cooler months of our Florida winters Sunscreen is vital to protect us against harmful UV rays that can causeskin cancer, premature aging and contribute to age spots, melasma and other skin discoloration.
3. Wash Your Face at Night
And the reason is not just to remove makeup, which can clog pores and leave potentially harmful chemicals on the skinovernight. Dirt, environmental pollutants, germs, bacteria and excessive oil accumulates on the skin during the day andshould be cleansed away so that the skin can rejuvenated.
4. Stop Smoking Like sun damage, smoking is a major factor in the wrinkling of the skin. Nicotine in cigarette smoke causes blood vessels and capillaries to constrict, decreasing the circulation of oxygen within the skin, which is necessary for the health, maintenance and growth of skin cells.
5. Proceed With Caution Over the counter products make many claims that they just cannot live up to. These days the products at the drug stores can cost as much or more than the products sold by skin care professionals. Be diligent in your research and know what ingredients you are putting on your skin. If unsure seek a licensed medical esthetician for recommendation for your skin. This will save you money and wasted time and effort,
6. Use Products for Your Skin Type Products that are not formulated for your skin type can cause problems. For example, products made for oily skin can further dry out dry skin. Oily or rich moisturizing formulations that are perfect for dry skin can make oily skin shiny or can clog the pores, causing breakouts.
7. Consume Beautiful Food What you put inside your skin is as important as what you put on it. If you're eating a diet full of fatty, processed, fried, and fast foods and are using too much sugar and salt, you are negatively impacting your skin's health--and no beauty product will be able to solve that problem! Instead consume a diet with the right amount of vitamins and minerals, found in abundance in fruits and vegetables.
8. Get Enough Sleep Sleep deprivation can cause under eye circles and puffiness, dull-looking skin, and it also contributes to stress, which aggravates skin conditions like acne and eczema .
9. Respect Your Skin Tone There is a reason why certain foundations, eye shadow shades and lip stick colors look better on you than others. Skin tone, as well as skin undertones, really do have an impact on what makeup you should use. A foundation that is too light or too dark can make you look like you're wearing a mask. Certain makeup colors might make your skin look muddy or sallow, while others will give skin a gorgeous glow. And makeup is not made to change your natural appearance. The perfect makeup enhances your beauty. Have a trained make-up artist give you a lesson and compare lines and ingredients.
10. Follow What's Good For You, Not Trends Trendy makeup looks can be fun, but just make sure that they suit you. There's nothing worse than following a popular trend that looks horrible or clownish on you. Not everything should be tried. And be careful of beauty fads like "beauty vitamins," "secret" beauty ingredients or the new magic anti-aging device with loads of promises but little science behind them.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
FLASH'S Quick Healthy Yummy Soup
Since we are all trying to eat healthier after the holidays and the weather chill ls in the air, -AND with the flu running ramped...Well, perfection can be found in this quick and easy soup that you can simmer on the stove all day. I like it served almost immediately when there is still a crispness to the veggies! YUM! So tasty! No guilt with seconds either! :)
Ingredients
1-Box Chicken Broth - I like the low sodium
1- Can Diced Tomatoes (Basil, Garlic & Oregano -- No Salt Added)
2 to 3 Stalks Celery
1/2 an Onion Chopped
1/2 Yellow Bell Pepper Chopped
2 Carrots Chopped
3 Finely chopped Garlic Cloves
1 to 2 Cups Kayle (torn into small pieces) You can use spinach instead.
A Dash of Crushed Red Peppers (if you want a hint of spiciness)
Salt and Pepper to taste
Directions
Bring the broth and tomatoes to a boil. Toss in all of your veggies. Bring to a boil again. Let boil for a minute or two and you are ready to serve :) Simplicity at its best. You might want to have an extra box of broth and can of tomatoes on hand to add and stretch. It's the soup that can keep on giving !

The Arc Chorus singing Holiday songs at Home Depot
If you were one of the last minute shoppers at Home Depot the Monday before Christmas, you were probably among the happy customers singing along with The Arc chorus! "We want to thank Home Depot for asking us to sing for their customers" said Scott Connelly, a member of the chorus. Scott has been attending programs at The Arc for several years, after a skate boarding accident left him with a traumatic brain injury. The chorus was in big demand this year, performing at several local businesses. The enthusiasm of the chorus, coupled with the joy of the various audiences, truly brought out the holiday spirit in everyone! Performing at the various venues helped us to enforce our creed: Mission Statement: The Arc supports and empowers individuals with special needs to achieve their life goals. Vision: The Arc will advocate for full acceptance of individuals with special needs as valued members of our community. The Arc is a Non-Profit, 501 (c) 3 agency, dedicated to meeting the needs of people with developmental disabilities in Indian River County. HR Dynamics Spreads Christmas Cheer!
The team at HR Dynamics spread Christmas cheer this year to local families battling childhood cancer. This is the second year that the staffing and recruiting firm has supported Quinton's Hope, an organization named after young Quinton who lost his battle to cancer in 2013 at the age of 12.
Pictured here with the Santa Sacks are (seated): Karel Smith Fox, Donna Leemon; (back row): David S. Johnson, Autumn Martin, and Jim Brower.
