editor's note poka-dot

Hello FLASHERS~

Well, days turn into weeks and weeks into months and...voila...we have already launched ourselves into February! February, the month that reminds us to tell those we love... that we do! That's a simple yet powerful thought. It reminds me that sometimes less is more and so it will be with this week's Editor's Note.  I encourage you all to take a moment and make a list of the things you love in this world and in your life: People, Places, Foods, Sayings, Events, Music... You get the idea?  Your 'happy' list! We all need one and it never hurts to remind ourselves of the good things in our lives. Some of the listings will probably be simple things and they might be the ones that bring the most joy. The people that find their way onto your list; please write them a hand written note this Valentine's Day. Let them know that they are important in your life and that they actually landed on your 'happy list'. Be specific about what it is you like about them. You will make their day! We all enjoy knowing that we are important, liked and cherished. Telling someone just that IS a simple yet powerful thing. Spread the love FLASHERS and while you're at it spread the FLASH! Send us to a friend and help us continue to grow by leaps and bounds!

PS...I LOVE our FLASHERS! You are on my 'happy list' and I appreciate you greatly!

PSS...Check out all of the amazing things on the calendar and select a few things to go out and enjoy!

VALENTINE OPEN HOUSE

WEEKEND PROJECT
"It is better to light a candle than complain about the darkness "
 Confucius
And so why not try creating these over-sized floor candle sticks the weekend.

I found this tutorial on the Impatiently Praying for Patience blog and I love them.  If you have ever priced over-sized candle sticks you know that a pair will have you paying out at least a couple of 'Benjamins'. The candle sticks pictured here can be created for pennies in comparison. When you look at the tutorial...don't forget that Home Depot will do the big cuts for you at no extra charge if you purchase the wood from them. Don't let that big saw in the tutorial scare you...You don't need it! So, go light the way FLASHERS and don't you be caught complainin'! :)

ALL ABOUT DUCHESS KATE!

I will happily admit that I became one of the many fans of Kate Middleton ever since she became engaged to Prince William. (My Great-Great Grandmother was a "Middleton," so heck...we're almost family! :) Her elegance and style in fashion is a welcome change from the blatant style of the Kim Kardashian types of today. If you agree, you will want to scroll this website I found. It  shows her favorite jewelry:, - some pieces loaned from the Queen herself, some from the late Princess Diana and other more modern (and more affordable!) items. You can also click on her fashion choices at the site. AN EYELINER TRICK

FOR THE LADIES

If you don't use eyeliner because you think it makes you look too  "made up," you might like this trick. Pictured here is Sienna Miller at the premiere  of the current film American Sniper. She wore a smooth line of black liquid eyeliner on top with a softer line of bronze pencil on the bottom.  The bronze balances the line of black, but it's soft enough not to scream "I'M WEARING EYELINER!"

YEEHAW...SAVE THIS FUN DATE!

  TODAY'S CHUCKLE

JUST THREE WORDS

A man was sitting at a bar when an exceptionally gorgeous young woman entered. She was so striking that the man could not take his eyes off her. The young woman noticed his attentive stare & walked over to him and said. "I'll do anything that you want me to do for  $100 on one condition."
Flabbergasted, the man asked what the condition was.
The young woman replied, "You have to tell me what you want me to do in just three words."
The man considered her proposition for a moment, withdrew his wallet from his pocket & slowly counted out five $20 bills, which he pressed into the young woman's hand.
He looked deeply into her eyes & slowly, meaningfully said, 'Paint my house.'

SKIN CARE TIPS TO KEEP LOOKING YOUNG, FRESH AND GLOWING!

Pour on the Protection
To ensure you layer on enough sunscreen ("the best way to keep skin youthful"), fill the hollow or your palm (about teaspoon) with a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to coat your face, neck, and ears.
Look Sun-Kissed
A recent study found a key marker of youthfulness is to add a little tint, it takes years off your face by evening out your skin tone. Tinted moisturizer or tinted sunscreens are a quick and easy way to accomplish this. Try Jane Iredale's Dream Tint or Image Skincare's Tinted Sunscreen.
Eat a Skin-Saving Breakfast
Include almonds in the first meal of the day. They contain essential fatty acids, which help put the brakes on inflammation that accelerates fine lines, sagging, and blotchiness. Not feeling like a nut? Salmon, tuna, and halibut are good lunch/dinner sources.
Spray Away Dryness
To keep skin supple, spray it several times daily with a hydrating spray that contains antioxidants. The water is packed with minerals like selenium that protect against UV damage.
Protect with Powder
Sunscreen stops working in less than 3 hours, so reapplication is key. For easy touch-ups, use a powder sunscreen. "It's light, so skincare stays intact." Our fave: Powder Me SPF by Jane Iredale

Pair Your Potions

A 'cross-training' regimen is the key to rapid rejuvenation. Some ingredients-like sunscreen and antioxidants in the morning and retinoids and peptides at night-work better as a team.
Develop a Bedside Manner
Anti-aging regimen at bedtime can be hard to adhere to. To avoid missing her evening routine store these products in a pretty skincare case on the nightstand. You can apply your products easily while in bed. Remember to include Retinols in your nighttime routine.

  RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Don't forget that Valentine's Day is next Saturday. This is a super easy, fun, and 'love' spirited edible. The picture says it all.  Just get yourself a heart cookie cutter and some of your favorite fruit and start cutting out your hearts.  You can turn them into 'love skewers' or edible surprises by replacing the heart of one fruit with a heart of another kind. Dip some in different types of chocolate. In other words...Mix it up and have some fun and share the love! :)

Vero Beach Power Squadron member Daniel Thomas received the Florida Boating Educator Award for 2014. The award is part of the NASBLA certification and award program recognizing outstanding excellence in teaching boating safety education both on the water and in the classroom. Thomas has extensive hours of teaching in the classroom for his VBPS as well as many hours volunteering as Education Director and instructor for the Youth Sailing Foundation of Indian River County. VBPS supports the Youth Sailing Foundation by teaching youngsters and adults sailing techniques. Thomas also volunteered his time as Training Sergeant and Special Deputy for the Indian River County Sheriff' Marine Unit. VBPS also participates in the USPS Boarman National Youth Poster Contest. Thomas enjoys teaching our local youth boating safety. The youth then draw a poster that depicts what they have learned.

The Arc had a special treat last month when Kate Brown, representing the Brevard Zoo, gave a presentation on the making of oyster mats for the Indian River lagoon. After an interesting and educational presentation on how important oysters are to the ecological system here in Indian River County, Kate and her assistants Emily Der and Andrew Luering, proceeded to teach the individuals at The Arc how to make the oysters mats. Members of The Arc Board of Directors, management and staff all joined in with Kate and her crew to learn and assist the special needs adults in making the mats.
