Happy Thursday FLASHERS!

My oh my...Our last February issue. Time just keeps on erasing the days of the week. Well, actually of the month and well let's face it, it is certainly chipping away at our new year already! We started distributing our printed March calendar yesterday and it is just overflowing with entertaining events. Literally overflowing...For the first time I had to encroach on the back panel to include the final two days of the month.  That's no surprise in this town! Our newsletter keeps getting longer as we work to keep up with all of the local happenings. Please take a minute to look at the many events featured in this issue. Whatever you fancy, we have you covered this week. Like to shop? Hit the St. Ed's Trunk Show! Enjoy concerts? Get out to the Main Street's Friday Fest or head to Endless Summer Vineyard and Winery for their free concert this Sunday. Need a dose of 'culture'? Head to the Museum of Art for the free admission day on Saturday. They have the Kidz ArtShop and adult art school open house in addition to the exhibits. Need some exercise? Mardi Growl's for you. This Walk, Run, Stroll is for such a great cause too. It benefits the Blue Ribbon Charitable Foundation that has provided every K-9 officer with state of the art bullet proof vests, pet oxygen masks to all the fire rescue stations, and assistance with pet medical cost for those in need...  all right here for IRC. Something to do with the kids? Head over to ELC this Sunday for Eco FEST! Looking for something totally different? The Budweiser Clydesdale's are coming this weekend! They have won our hearts in touching Super Bowl commercials and will certainly now completely steal them away. Seeing these majestic creatures up close is something that belongs on everyone's 'bucket list'! I can almost hear the thunder of their hooves already as they connect with the asphalt in such a powerful manner that commands such respect! They're what I consider the royalty of the animal kingdom because they are so impressive and dignified ... simply amazing! Don't miss them! Check out the calendar for a complete listing. You don't want to miss anything.

Now, a 'shout out' for a rip-roaring event next weekend. I'm helping with the Habitat Hoedown and it is just around the corner...March 7th and boy do we have a night in store for you! This is just one of those casual events that dishes up a huge servin' of good ole' RUSTIC FUN! You'll soon be speakin' the cowboy way as 'yeehaw' seems to capture the sentiment. Tickets are selling 'lickity split' at only $75 each! Nearly the price of a dinner out. So, 'round up your friends' and get your tickets now! Head to the hoedown for a night of frolic and fun, cocktails and dinner, games and a silent auction!  Have something to donate to the silent auction? I'll just love ya forever and if that's not enough... I'll give you a shout out in next week's FLASH! Just email me. You know I will be most appreciative!!! :)

Thanks FLASHERS~

WOWZIE...WOW...WOW!!!

Recently buyers of luxury handbags seem to prefer buying their Birkins on the second-hand market rather than spending years on the Hermès boutique's wait list. This  Hermès special order  Birkin  crocodile bag of electric blue with gold hardware fetched $81,250 at Heritage Auctions' February sale in New York. That sounds like a lot to pay for a purse, but it's considerably less than the top price of $203,150 paid for a crocodile Birkin with real diamonds in December 2011! ... Say what?

DID YOU KNOW?

TODAY IS PISTACHIO DAY

Pistachio nuts and almonds are the only two nuts mentioned in the Bible. (Jacob said, "Pack your bags with the best products of this land. Take them down to the man as gifts--balm, honey, gum, aromatic resin, pistachio nuts, and almonds." Genesis 43:11Even in ancient times these delicious snacks were appreciated, ...and they probably didn't know that they were also a healthy choice! According to a Penn. State  University study, the nuts contain healthy fats, are high in antioxidants and rich in plant sterols which inhibit cholesterol absorption.

  TODAY'S CHUCKLE

While driving on a highway after a heavy snow storm in Boston, a motorist noted a cop directing traffic while standing waist deep in a snowdrift on the side of the road.  Feeling sorry for him, the motorist called out "I'm sorry you have to work half buried in the snow."

The cop called back "I'm okay. It's the horse I'm on that I'm

                               worried about!"

IT'S HERE TO STAY!

The Board of Directors of the National Navy UDT-SEAL Museum has re-affirmed that Fort Pierce is the proper permanent location of the Museum and will not relocate. Fort Pierce has been home to the National Navy UDT-SEAL Museum for 30 years, and was the birthplace of the US Navy Frogman. The history - not only with respect to the Navy SEALs - but also with the local community has never been more rich and bountiful than it is today.

"We are in an unprecedented period of growth at the National Navy UDT-SEAL Museum thanks to our supporters along the Treasure Coast, South Florida and the entire Country. Additionally, we are in the midst of a 2.2 million dollar renovation which will be completed this April." stated Executive Director Master Chief Rick Kaiser USN SEAL (Ret.). "The Museum isn't going anywhere. The idea of relocating defies logic and will not get in the way of our Mission: preserving the history and heritage of the Navy SEALs and their predecessors, honoring our fallen at the Navy SEAL Memorial and supporting our families through the Trident House charities program. The museum is staying in Florida."

Olive Oil and Your Lips

Whether caused by a harsh sun, or freezing winter temperatures, lips that are cracked, dehydrated, and chapped are miserable. The good news is that the same thing you use to grease your pan can also offer a protective coating to your lips.

Olive oil, in fact, has long been touted for its medicinal uses, especially in the Mediterranean, where olives were first cultivated around 5000 BC. Today, while many drugstores have entire aisles devoted to a wide assortment of lip-care products, olive oil is still remarkably effective in keeping your lips soft and supple. It's an excellent moisturizer, and is actually a popular ingredient in many skin-conditioning products.

You can also combine olive oil with sugar to make a simple lip scrub. Make a paste out of sugar and olive oil, and rub it on your lips. The sugar will exfoliate the lips, getting rid of any dry, dead skin cells on the surface, while the residual olive oil will add hydration without clogging your pores, leaving your lips feeling smoother.

HEALTH TIP
Do Mini-Workouts
Okay,...I think we all know by now that we're supposed to get at least 30 minutes of exercise daily. But did you know you can get the same health benefits from doing mini-workouts? That right! According to Web MD you can take several mini little breaks throughout the day to squeeze in your fitness. For those sitting at the computer most of the day, it's already recommended that you get up and move frequently... Now you can do it with a 10 minute workout as your goal. For example, you can jog in place, climb stairs, lift weights, dance, etc! You'll hardly notice that 30 minutes missing when you sneak it in throughout the day. I'm going to give it a try. I work from home so...good luck to those of you dancing in your offices! :)

DENNIS QUAID IS HERE!
Ellen DeGeneres is producing a new show on Tuesday nights called
Repeat After Me. The show features celebrities working with a hidden camera and an ear piece being told to say outrageous things to an unsuspecting person. The idea came from skits Ellen has done on her own show, many of which have been with Dennis Quaid. Here are a couple.  The later is one of my favorites. Click Here and Here.

  RECIPE OF THE WEEK

NO BAKE - CHOCOLATE WAFER ICEBOX CAKE

My Mom says that my Grandmother used to make this 'no bake' cake for her bridge group in the 1920s.  Actually, it dates back to when everyone still had "iceboxes" instead of refrigerators!

(NOTE:Some markets don't carry the chocolate wafers, so you may have to ask. I found them near the ice cream syrups  by the freezer department and the recipe was on the box.)

 CHOCOLATE WAFER ICEBOX CAKE

Ingredients

2 cups heavy cream

2 tablespoons sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract (or mint, or flavor of your choice)

1 package Nabisco® Famous Chocolate Wafers (9 ounces)

Chocolate curls or chocolate sprinkles

Preparation

Begin whipping the cream. Add the sugar and vanilla and continue whipping until stiff peaks form. Spread 1/2 tablespoon whipped cream on each wafer.

Begin stacking the wafers together on end (on a long serving platter), then stand on edge on the platter to make a 14-inch lo2. Frost the log with the remaining whipped cream.

Refrigerate for 4-6 hours. Garnish with chocolate curls or chocolate sprinkles and slice at a 45° angle so that each serving shows the chocolate and white 'zebra' striped layers.

If desired, you may freeze this cake, covered with plastic wrap; thaw in the refrigerator for 1 hour before serving.

Indian River Medical Center (IRMC)

welcomes Diane Loveday RN

Diane Loveday is taking on a new position as a patient care navigator. Loveday, who has more than 35 years of nursing experience, will serve as Heart Failure Acute Myocardial Infarction care coordinator. Loveday will provide personalized support to each patient to help them understand their condition, treatment, medications, and prepare for their return home.

IRMC is one of 35 hospitals in the country and the first in Florida selected to participate in the American College of Cardiology (ACC) Patient Navigator Program. This is the first cardiology program of its kind designed to help hospitals avoid hospital readmissions by providing personalized services to heart disease patients.

After graduating from Lynn Hospital School of Nursing in Massachusetts, Loveday began her nursing career at Massachusetts General Hospital before moving to Florida to continue her career. She joined IRMC in 2011 working as an RN in the Cardiac Step-Down Unit and in the Telemetry Overflow Unit.

Hospitals were selected based on their commitment to quality as demonstrated through participation in the National Cardiovascular Data Registry ACTION Registry-GWTG and Hospital to Home Initiative. Out of 400 eligible hospitals, only 35 were selected based on readmission rates, having recognized leaders in cardiology on staff, and an established culture of quality already part of the hospital infrastructure. AstraZeneca is the founding sponsor of the ACC Patient Navigator Program.

Vero Beach Museum of Art - 3001 Riverside Park Drive, Vero Beach FL 33163

Embracing Space & Color: Art On & Off the Wall February 20 - June 7, 2015 Robert Rauschenberg once described his working method as "a collaboration with materials." By creating works of art that literally combined the qualities of painting and sculpture, he permanently altered the definitions of both. Today, artists feel free to operate in the "gap between art and life" that Rauschenberg famously staked out as his territory. Utilizing a blend of traditional and non-traditional media and materials, from textiles and everyday objects to pigment on various kinds of fiber, the artists represented in Embracing Space and Color create sculptural works of art that incorporate elements of painting, especially in their use of color, but are not confined to two dimensions. Among the artists whose works of art will be mounted on the walls and ceiling of the Holmes gallery are El Anatsui, Devorah Sperber, Anne Boudreau, Ralph Helmick, and Olga de Amaral. Vero Beach Museum of Art - 3001 Riverside Park Drive, Vero Beach FL 33163

Howard Ben Tré: New Sculpture January 24 - May 17, 2015 Howard Ben Tré: New Sculpture is an exhibition of stunning cast glass and bronze sculptures, including works from his recent "Lightness of Being" series. With sculpture represented in more than 85 museum and public collections, Ben Tré is a pioneer in the use of cast glass as a sculptural medium. His recent sculpture was inspired by traditional architectural forms of columns, spires, minarets and obelisks. At the same time, they can be seen as individual figures forming a related family group within a defined space. Each sculpture has a foot anchoring it firmly to the ground, a demarcated waist and a head that continues the upward movement of the form. As individual works, they speak to the connection between architectural forms and the creation of human communities. Monday - Saturday 10:00am to 4:30pm * Sundays 1:00pm to 4:30pm * Closed Mondays from Memorial Day through Labor Day For more information call: phone (772) 231-0707
