Happy March, Flashers!
March is here, 'spring has sprung' and after those chilly February days, the weather has been gorgeous! I hope you were among the hundreds who enjoyed being outside last Sunday when the magnificent Clydesdale horses paraded down Ocean Drive. It never ceases to amaze me how much goes on in Vero. For a town this size, it seems we have so many wonderful things that are usually found only in much larger cities. Much of this is because of the generosity of some of our residents like the Peter Busch family who made it possible to bring the Clydesdales to Vero. The patrons of the Riverside Theatre have brought Broadway to us, and we are indebted to the many who have contributed to our world class Art Museum. Along with the financial support of those, I also want to thank all the volunteers who give their time to make it all possible. I know many of our Flashers are included in this group, so thank you, - thank you so very much! I keep trying to come up with a slogan that covers all this, like 'Vero Beach - The biggest small city on earth!' If any of you have a suggestion, send it to me. It will be fun to see what you come up with and who knows...Maybe it will catch on. Meanwhile, get out there this week and enjoy all that Vero has to offer. I'll be working at the Habitat Hoedown Saturday night! It's sure to be a fun night! Last chance for tickets. :) Make sure to check the calendar because there are many fun things going on. A St. Patrick's Day Parade this weekend downtown, First Friday Gallery Stroll, Concerts, Exhibits, Visiting Authors...My oh my...A true delicacy of the arts! ENJOY!

HEALTH TIP WHAT'S IN THAT E-CIGARETTE? According to WebMD, E-cigarettes probably aren't as bad for you as regular cigarettes, but the problem is, nobody seems to know for sure,... and at this time the FDA does not regulate E-cigarettes. The various brands contain different ingredients, and some of those ingredients are carcinogens, like formaldehyde, that can possibly cause cancer. It is known that Nicotine is one of the ingredients and, while it is does not cause cancer, it is the addictive ingredient in cigarettes, so E-cigarettes could become addictive too. For a complete and excellent explanation of the problem and possible ingredients, Click here. |

DON'T GIVE UP ---DID YOU KNOW?
Oprah Winfrey was fired from her first job as a news reporter. The world famous talk show host, who is now worth over $2 billion, wasn't able to hold a job at the Baltimore TV station where she got her start. According to her producers, she was too emotional to properly read the news. That same kind of emotional involvement would later become the key to Oprah's success. Obviously, the lesson here is that if you're trying to achieve something, don't let rejection stop you,...'just keep on keepin' on!' Click here for a list of 35 famous, yet once rejected individuals.

TODAY'S CHUCKLE
Be Careful What You Wish For...
A guy was walking along the beach when he came across an old bottle. He struggled to open the cap and "poof" a genie appeared. The genie was so happy to be freed of the lamp that he granted the guy three wishes.
"I wish to be richer than Bill Gates," said the guy.
The genie said, "You will forever be a dollar richer than Bill Gates. What's your second wish?"
"Genie, I want the most beautiful Porsche ever made."
"That's easy," said the genie. He waves his hand and a beautiful red Porsche appeared. The genie then asks the guy for his third wish.
"Genie," the guy said, "I can't think of anything now. May I save the third wish for later?"
"Gee, this is most unusual, but I guess so. Just make the wish when you're ready," and whoosh the genie disappears into the lamp.
The guy carefully places the bottle in the trunk of his new Porsche and turns on the radio as he drives down the highway. He is so happy that he begins to sing along with the familiar commercial on the radio.
"Oh, I wish I was an Oscar-Mayer Wiener..."

Homeless Family Center is proud to announce Chef Dean Evans of the Oak Harbor Club as the winner of the 2015 Vero's Top Chef Challenge for the second year in a row. Chef Dean won with his mouthwatering culinary creation of pan seared sea scallop and lamb lollipop. Chef Evans was one of four savory chefs who advanced to the Top Chef Finale where guests cast their vote for their favorite chef.
The Dessert Champion Chef Joe Faria prepared his delectable chocolate cake with bacon brittle ice cream and apple beignets with caramel bacon sauce. A silent auction and wine pairings added to the evening's excitement. Guests voted for the best savory dish without knowing which chef created the course until after the voting ceased; voting was based on taste, presentation and creativity.

Indian River Medical Center (IRMC) is the first and only medical center on the Space Coast and Treasure Coast to offer the latest in lung diagnostic technology. This new, minimally invasive procedure aids in earlier lung cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy™ procedures, also known as ENB™ procedures, which are performed with a device known as the superDimension™ navigation system with LungGPS™ technology, allow physicians to navigate and access difficult-to-reach areas of the lung from the inside.
"The superDimension™ navigation system, with GPS-like technology, is a significant advancement for the diagnosis of lung cancer and overcomes limitations of traditional diagnostic approaches," said Diego Maldonado, MD, pulmonologist. "By guiding us through the complicated pathways of the lung, we're able to access and sample target tissue without open surgery or needle biopsy."

Having fun and doing good for others doesn't need to be mutually exclusive. Actually, the two concepts are highly compatible. Just ask the women members of Orchid Island Golf and Beach Club. The second annual "Connecting for Cancer Girls' Night Out" was held Monday, February 23 at the home of Tom and Kathleen O'Brien. This night, which was an ultimate hen party, raised close to 50% more funds than last year and all of the funds from the Event will benefit cancer patients in need through the "Pay-It-Forward" Fund, which is part of the Excellence in Cancer Care Program of IRMC. This special donor generated fund is a wonderful source of hope and comfort to those in need of care. It provides financial assistance to carefully screened patients who are unable to afford needed cancer treatment, diagnostic services and preventative care.

Indian River Habitat for Humanity (IRHFH) held its Annual Donor Appreciation Night on February 17 sponsored by Northern Trust Bank. More than one hundred twenty-five donors and guests were greeted by the sweet sounds of stringed instruments provided by the Edden Family, a family of nine who are currently working their sweat equity hours toward a new Habitat home.
The celebration started with a prayer of thanks by Cliff Melvin, Pastor of Christ by the Sea United Methodist Church and an IRHFH Board Vice-Chair. Northern Trust president Scott Alexander welcomed all the attendees, followed by IRHFH Chair David Colclough, who thanked the generosity of Habitat's dedicated supporters and volunteers. "We currently have 750 children living in our Habitat homes. And we will build or renovate 30 houses this fiscal year, in addition to the 70 homes in Gifford and Fellsmere communities that we will do repairs on through our Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative."
Indian River Habitat Pres/CEO Andy Bowler spoke about Habitat's Home Center ReStore expansion plans. "Financial donations alone are not sufficient to sustain Habitat's programs. With this expansion, we believe that we can grow our sales and keep our program meeting the needs of our community. Over the last nine years, the ReStore has funded an equivalent of 1 in 3 of the homes we have built."
For more information on Habitat programs and the expansion campaign, visit www.irchabitat.org or call Andy Bowler at 772-562-9860, ext. 208.

10:00am - 4:30pm | Embracing Space & Color: Exhibition
Vero Beach Museum of Art - 3001 Riverside Park Drive, Vero Beach FL 33163
Embracing Space & Color: Art On & Off the Wall February 20 - June 7, 2015 Robert Rauschenberg once described his working method as "a collaboration with materials." By creating works of art that literally combined the qualities of painting and sculpture, he permanently altered the definitions of both. Today, artists feel free to operate in the "gap between art and life" that Rauschenberg famously staked out as his territory. Utilizing a blend of traditional and non-traditional media and materials, from textiles and everyday objects to pigment on various kinds of fiber, the artists represented in Embracing Space and Color create sculptural works of art that incorporate elements of painting, especially in their use of color, but are not confined to two dimensions. Among the artists whose works of art will be mounted on the walls and ceiling of the Holmes gallery are El Anatsui, Devorah Sperber, Anne Boudreau, Ralph Helmick, and Olga de Amaral. Monday - Saturday 10:00am to 4:30pm * Sundays 1:00pm to 4:30pm * Closed Mondays from Memorial Day through Labor Day For more information call: phone (772) 231-0707

Vero Beach Museum of Art - 3001 Riverside Park Drive, Vero Beach FL 33163
Howard Ben Tr: New Sculpture January 24 - May 17, 2015 Howard Ben Tr: New Sculpture is an exhibition of stunning cast glass and bronze sculptures, including works from his recent "Lightness of Being" series. With sculpture represented in more than 85 museum and public collections, Ben Tr is a pioneer in the use of cast glass as a sculptural medium. His recent sculpture was inspired by traditional architectural forms of columns, spires, minarets and obelisks. At the same time, they can be seen as individual figures forming a related family group within a defined space. Each sculpture has a foot anchoring it firmly to the ground, a demarcated waist and a head that continues the upward movement of the form. As individual works, they speak to the connection between architectural forms and the creation of human communities.

2:00pm | Distinguished Professor Series - Bruce Boucher, Ph.D
Vero Beach Museum of Art - 3001 Riverside Park Drive, Vero Beach FL 33163
The Lawn of the University of Virginia is one of the great architectural masterpieces of America. It embodies not only Jefferson's belief in the power of knowledge, but also the symbolic form in which it could be manifested in a university setting. In his designs, he employed the classical orders to embody a hierarchy of knowledge on the Lawn, from colonnades to the pavilions, and, of course, the central Rotunda. In doing so, he also indulged in a degree of "creative misinterpretation" about his sources.
