editor's note poka-dot

Top o' the morning' to you, Flashers!

With that greeting, I'm just getting a little head start on next Tuesday's celebration of St. Patrick's Day. It's the day we all wear green and pretend to be Irish, isn't it? It's a fun celebration and I think you all know by now, I'll celebrate any day that's fun! You'll find lots of terrific St. Pat's ideas in this issue, along with a lot of other things to do. Our "season" doesn't seem to be slowing down at all. The FAIR opens tomorrow. You've got Art Under the Oaks this weekend. You can help your fitness goals, enjoy the ocean breeze and help a great cause by participating in Hibiscus Children's Center Dash in the Sand on Saturday. You can celebrate the 112th birthday of Pelican Island and the National Wildlife Refuge at the Pelican Island Wildlife Festival. Like live music? Get out and enjoy the Sunset Concert on Ocean Drive on Saturday followed by a free concert "Paddy On' at Endless Summer Vineyard and Winery this Sunday. If you haven't been to either of these concerts before they are wonderful, outdoor, casual, laid back 'must-do' events! You have your choice of two orchestra events, guest author at the Vero Beach Book Center, exhibits at the Art Museum, a magnificent Nature Lego exhibit at McKee Gardens, and on and on and on....

Last week I asked FLASHERS to submit a slogan for our city. Millie Del Grossa emailed me a suggestion that is quite appropriate to this note's sentiment... "Vero Beach - No ZERO here."  It's perfect, isn't it? People in this town that can't find something to do???... Well, isn't that puzzling? Get out there FLASHERS and enjoy our city!

DID YOU KNOW?

HOW THE LEGEND OF THE LEPRECHAUN BEGAN

The leprechaun legend can be traced back to eighth-century tales of water spirits called "luchorpán," meaning small body. The legend eventually evolved into a mischievous household fairy who cannot be trusted and is said to haunt cellars and drink heavily. Belief in leprechauns and other magical creatures  were once widespread in Ireland.

If you happen to come across a leprechaun, be sure to hold on to him before he vanishes.  According to Irish legends, people lucky enough to capture a  leprechaun can barter his freedom for his pot of gold or three wishes, but dealing with a leprechaun can be a tricky proposition. The legend warns against greed and the folly of trying to get rich quick.

  TODAY'S CHUCKLE

SKIN ARE TIPS

*  Your perfume can irritate your skin and, thanks to its alcohol content. It can interfere with your skin's ability to maintain moisture levels. Avoid fragrance, as this can cause mild irritation that further compromises barrier function against drying elements.
*  Shortening your shower time and cooling the temperature of the water won't feel so great in the moment, when you'd like a little steam heat in your life, but your skin will thank you later. Hot, long showers strip our skin of its natural moisturizing oils. It's recommended to bathe no more than once a day.
*  Drink more water each day than you expect to really need. That will help replenish the water you're losing, thanks to windy, cold weather and overheated houses.
*  Coconut oil, avocado oil, and olive oil applied topically are great for all skin types! They can speed up wound healing and are effective in increasing hydration and reducing water loss in seriously dry skin.
*  Eating fish oil supplements or another source of heart-healthy omega-3s. That may be because a component of omega-3s,

eicosapentaenoic acid -- or EPA -- is thought to help regulate the skin's oil production.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

IRISH COFFEE

The Irish Coffee was created by Irish chef Joe Sheridan in 1942 at the Foynes airbase (replaced by today's nearby Shannon International Airport) near Limerick, Ireland. The story goes that a flight returned to the airport after attempting to reach New York during a winter storm one evening. (Sounds familiar!) Sheridan ran the airport's restaurant and mixed up the first round of Irish Coffee for the stranded passengers. "Hey Buddy," said a surprised American passenger, "is this Brazilian coffee?" "No," said Joe, "that's Irish Coffee," and that's what it's been called ever since!

              Ingredients

4 ounces strong, rich hot coffee

1 ounce Irish whiskey

2 tsp brown sugar

1 ounce whipped heavy cream

Preparation
  1. Pour the sugar then coffee into a warm Irish coffee glass, mug, or other heat-proof stemmed glass.
  2. Stir until dissolved.
  3. Add the Irish whiskey and stir again.
  4. Float the cream on top.  For a touch of color, drizzle a little Crème de Menthe liqueur on top of cream or green granular sugar.

NOTE: This can be served with a dessert sundae of vanilla ice cream (or pineapple sherbet) topped with the Crème de Menthe.

Vero Beach Museum of Art - 3001 Riverside Park Drive, Vero Beach FL 33163

Embracing Space & Color: Art On & Off the Wall February 20 - June 7, 2015 Robert Rauschenberg once described his working method as "a collaboration with materials." By creating works of art that literally combined the qualities of painting and sculpture, he permanently altered the definitions of both. Today, artists feel free to operate in the "gap between art and life" that Rauschenberg famously staked out as his territory. Utilizing a blend of traditional and non-traditional media and materials, from textiles and everyday objects to pigment on various kinds of fiber, the artists represented in Embracing Space and Color create sculptural works of art that incorporate elements of painting, especially in their use of color, but are not confined to two dimensions. Among the artists whose works of art will be mounted on the walls and ceiling of the Holmes gallery are El Anatsui, Devorah Sperber, Anne Boudreau, Ralph Helmick, and Olga de Amaral. With sculpture represented in more than 85 museum and public collections, Ben Tré is a pioneer in the use of cast glass as a sculptural medium. His recent sculpture was inspired by traditional architectural forms of columns, spires, minarets and obelisks. At the same time, they can be seen as individual figures forming a related family group within a defined space. Each sculpture has a foot anchoring it firmly to the ground, a demarcated waist and a head that continues the upward movement of the form. As individual works, they speak to the connection between architectural forms and the creation of human communities. 10:00am - 4:30pmEmbracing Space & Color: Exhibition

Monday - Saturday 10:00am to 4:30pm * Sundays 1:00pm to 4:30pm * Closed Mondays from Memorial Day through Labor Day For more information call: phone (772) 231-0707
