HAPPY THURSDAY, FLASHERS!

It's hard to believe that this is the last day in April. My goodness...We are a 1/4 way through the year already. Many schools have already held their senior proms and the seniors are already counting down to graduation. Some of you may have already attended college graduations and  are helping your children begin the process of job hunting. I know what a busy time the high school and college years can be for parents, but I hope you will cherish them if you are living them right now. My three children are young adults now, and are no longer living close to home. I tremendously miss having them nearby. Since I don't have my own children in town, I enjoy keeping up with the activities of my niece Amanda Gard who is a junior at Indian River Charter High School.  I hated missing the recent Hibiscus pageant and festival, but I had to get to Georgia to celebrate my 30th anniversary with my husband before flying from Atlanta to NY with my mother and daughter.  I REALLY missed a BIG 'family moment' though. My niece, Amanda, was crowned "Miss Hibiscus!"

I want to take a moment to share a pageant moment with you. The night before the actual pageant, the contestants appeared before a panel of five judges. Each judge posed a question. One of the questions was, "If you could commit a crime and not be caught ... What crime would you commit?" Mandy's response roused laughter from me that could be heard from Georgia's farmland. She pondered the question for a moment and verbalized that it was a tough one. Then like a lightbulb was turned on, she conjured her crime and relayed it to the judges. She informed them that she had always fantasized hiding out in a department store with her friends until the doors were locked and they were left alone. With the innocence of a childhood fantasy propelling her delivery, she carried the judges along with her on the fantasy night that included trying on designer clothes that she can only dream of and enjoying a fashion show where she and  her friends were the models, a unique game of hide and seek, jumping on beds, and enjoying the toy department, before settling down to watch TV.  I loved her answer! It reflects the essence of who she is. She has a pure and golden heart, she can be silly and a great deal of FUN, and she is guided by a moral compass that reflects a maturity greater than her 17 years. My understanding is that she had the judges laughing and fantasizing of a department store 'sleep-over' before they transitioned to the next question. I have the utmost respect for all of the contestants who participated in the pageant and I know the judges had an incredibly difficult task of selecting one young lady from such a superior group. That being said, I am quite a proud 'Auntie Val' and I am thrilled to congratulate Mandy!  I pray that she keeps a dose of childhood adventure with her way into adulthood and I urge all FLASHERS to do the same! I just heard this quote today on a radio talk show. It is one you have probably heard before, "We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing." NEVER stop playing FLASHERS and NEVER stop having FUN! 'Cause after all...Fun is the BEST thing to have! :)

Thank you~

The Peace of Blue

THE 141st KENTUCKY DERBY

THIS SATURDAY ON NBC

6:24 P.M.

It's known as "the run for the roses" and "the most exciting two minutes in sports," and our Flash family thinks it's a fun reason to have a party! This year's large field of 20 horses will break from the starting gates at Churchill Downs at 6:24 p.m. on Saturday. NBC's live coverage, which will include plenty of  race history on  the NBC Sports Network prior to the actual race which begins at noon. The coverage will then switch to NBC at 4 p.m. It's interesting to note that since 1930, only three horses have won the Derby if they started higher than the No. 16 post. Consequently, the drawing for post position  yesterday could have a strong effect on the outcome. At our party, we always ask our lady guests to wear hats and give a prize for the best one. In order to 'bet' on a horse, we ask that everyone put in $2 and then we draw numbers from a hat. The guest who draws the winning horse wins 'the pot'!  For more Derby info, Click here.

Gift Idea For Mother's Day
Mother's Day is Sunday, May 10th, - just a little over a week away. It makes no difference if you are 12 years old or 52...This is a great gift idea to make for Mom! It's easy too! You can copy old and current photos and turn them into magnets.  For the 'how to' directions...

Did you know that your smartphone may be tracking your every move? And not only that, but keeping a history of where you've been and how long you stayed there? It literally keeps a record of every single location you visit. TODAY Show investigative correspondent, Jeff Rossen, brought this issue to the public this week. If you missed it. NEW COLON CANCER TESTS

In past issues I have told you that my Mom has survived colon cancer twice and consequently our family has gained knowledge the hard way. Fortunately, medical research  is constantly coming up with new methods for detecting cancer and that includes colon cancer. I was surprised at what I learned in this article from WebMD and urge each of you to read it. Click here.

DID YOU KNOW

Ice cream may have been around since 54 A.D. Legend has it that Roman Emperor Nero sent his slaves into the mountains to fetch snow to mix with nectar, fruit pulp, and honey.  (Yum!) Nero was evil and his reign was lavish and tyrannical. He killed his mother who tried to control him,  persecuted Christians and is said to have "fiddled while Rome burned,"... but at least he may have done something right!

  TODAY'S CHUCKLE

A new young teacher was trying to make use of her psychology courses. She started her class by saying, "If you think  you're stupid, stand up!" No one moved, but after a few seconds, little Johnny stood up.

The teacher said, "Do you really think you're stupid, Johnny?"

"No, ma'am, but I hate to see you standing there all by yourself!"

A PRODUCT WE LIKE

Have you tried the JIF WHIPS peanut butter that comes in a plastic tub? It's delicious, goes a long way, and has less calories than the usual brand. It can be spread for sandwiches, but it's also delicious to use as a dip for pretzels, crackers and cookies. Your kids will love it and so will you!

Not Just A Pretty Face:

Get Gorgeous Hands, Legs And Feet For Summer!

The obvious place to start is with a lovely manicure and pedicure. Whether you go to your favorite salon or DIY at home, colors this summer are fun and unexpected: deep nautical blue, bright orange, teal and bronze are just a few of my favorites. Book an appointment today! Nail polish looks best set off against great skin. For hands, frequent moisturizing is a must, and SPF is critical for keeping your skin smooth and radiant. All of our foundations (except Liquid Minerals) have SPF and are endorsed by the Skin Cancer Foundation. Try smoothing or dusting some on the backs of your hands once you finish applying to your face. Next, be sure to keep some Powder-Me SPF in your purse or car to apply to hands and arms when out or driving. It is amazing how much sun gets through the window. I discovered this once when I noticed a deeply tanned left arm. Yikes! If you like the way tan hands look with your summery nail polish, moisturize like crazy and apply Tantasiato to the backs of hands. Now let's have some fun with the legs and feet. It's time to take those babies out from hibernation. Goodbye (for now) boots. Hello, pumps, sandals, even my Vans look cuter when my legs look great. The Tantasia acts as an instant bronzer, and develops a natural-looking tan gradually over 2-3 days. Just let your legs "dry" for about 15 minutes if you plan to wear clothing on top, and dark colors are probably a good idea with Tantasia. Finally, if you are going to expose that skin outside, please remember to top with Powder-Me SPF. Gone are the days of ashy, pasty early-season skin, it's time to celebrate fabulous legs that are instantly ready for fun in the sun!

VIDEO OF THE WEEK

Here is an adorable video of a young foal giving a snuggle cuddle!  Mom is in the background providing a curious look ever so often.

  RECIPE OF THE WEEK

The Mint Julep is the signature drink of the Kentucky Derby, but they are usually made one at a time after muddling the fresh mint, - and it's a very strong drink! Here is a version for serving from a punch bowl. It also isn't as strong and uses Mint Jelly to achieve that signature flavor.

Mint Julep Punch

1 cup mint jelly
4 cups water
1 750-ml. (3 1/4 cups) bottle bourbon
6 cups pineapple juice
1/2 cup lime juice
7 cups lemon-lime soda
Fresh mint for garnish

Ice mold

Combine the mint jelly and 2 cups of water in a saucepan, stirring over low heat until the jelly melts. Cool and refrigerate until you're ready to serve it, then add bourbon, pineapple juice, remaining water, and lime juice. Chill.

To serve, pour mint julep mixture over a small block of ice or ice mold in a punch bowl. Slowly pour in the soda, stirring gently. Garnish with fresh mint leaves.

This recipe makes over 40 4-ounce servings, an average punch cup size. Reduce portions accordingly for a smaller quantity.

Fifty  competitors found out they have what it takes as they completed the 2nd Annual Navy SEAL Museum "Bridge Challenge" held on Saturday, April 18th on  the Barber bridge. With numerous on-lookers under the bridge and at the Riverside Café, the competitors swam, paddled and climbed 70 feet to the top of the bridge prior to running a final mile and descending back down 70 feet into the water. This year's winning team consisted of Matt Monaco, Scott Cohen, Megan Hyndman, Ed Branigan and Alyssa Kerperien with a time of 36 minutes and 17 seconds.  Great job Team Monaco.  HooYah!
