Happy Thursday, Flashers!
This Saturday, May 16th, is Armed Forces Day, a day when we pay tribute to our brave men and women in service. Ever since I was a child, I have had a profound appreciation and admiration of those brave individuals who serve in our armed forces. I think I must have been born with a patriotic gene. My late father was in the Navy in World War II, but was delayed state side in Hawaii when his ship was damaged and in dry dock. As a result, he never experienced first hand the brutality of war. I married a man who shares my same sense of patriotism and I have no problem admitting that his admiration is reinforced with great knowledge. He can't get enough of it. I joke with him every now and then by telling him I can spoil the ending and tell him who won the war when I find our TV frequently frozen on the History channel where the battles of WWII are playing out once again. I completely understand him though and wish I could gain and retain the knowledge he has acquired. I am sure that his love of history was instilled in him by his father who played an active role in WWII. His Father, my late father-in-law, was in the 392nd Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force and was in the thick of the battle in London. His Name was Dr. Maltby Watkins. Some of our Ft. Pierce Flashers might remember him because he was the 'family doctor' there for forty years. Maltby was a waist-gunner and flew 30 missions. He invited myself, my husband and our son, who at the time was 8 years old, to join him on a trip back to London with the 8th Air Force's for the 50th year reunion. It was by far the most amazing experience of my life! It would take a book, not an editor's note to adequately convey such a unique experience. I will tell you that we were fortunate to have actually met family members of the family in Wendling that found Maltby in a field after his plane was shot down. His plane was actually shot down twice and Maltby had to parachute out both times. The family in Wendling had kept pieces of the plane all these years and they presented pieces to Maltby at the reunion. We now have a piece framed and hanging in the hall with a piece of Maltby's parachute. We visited his barracks, shared stories, visited a school, cheered on our veterans who participated in a parade in their honor, and sang the war songs on the bus with all of the other WWII vets that made it back for this very special gathering. We were humbled by all of the locals that were still so incredibly appreciative of what the Americans had done for them fifty years ago. Everywhere, and I do mean EVERYWHERE, we went they would come and share their stories. Some shed tears, but they all embraced and thanked our veterans, the members of this amazing group that has so aptly been titled the 'Greatest Generation'! I wish you could have all been there!
It is now our opportunity to thank and appreciate those who give so much to ensure the freedoms we enjoy. If we could show an ounce of the appreciation that our European friends showered on us...it would be amazing! Do your part...Say thank you! Our positive person for May is the founder of the Military Moms Prayer Group, Pam Proctor. You can stop by tonight at 5:00 to thank this group of Moms personally. The family that is left behind makes great sacrifices too and it is nice to remember them as well. Why not bring a hand written note that they can pass on to those in active duty.
You will read more about how you can share in the celebration of Armed Forces Day in a post below, as well as other fun activities going on this weekend. So much to do and so little time...Enjoy them all, Flashers! Stop by our booth at the KidBlast this Saturday in Riverside Park! See you there!
Thank you~

PAM PROCTOR
IS A POSITIVE PERSON
Pam Proctor says it was a "little voice from God" that prompted her to start the Military Moms Prayer Group nearly nine years ago in August 2006. At the time, several mothers she knew had sons serving in Iraq, and she sensed an overpowering need to bring women together to pray.
"The voice kept getting louder and louder," she said, until finally, she and four other women -- Linda Colontrelle, Margy Kulczycki, Gail Reams, and Michele Scales -- teamed up one Thursday to pray. They've been praying ever since, in an interdenominational group that meets from 5-6 PM Thursdays at Christ Church Vero Beach behind Outback. On any given Thursday, anywhere from 10 to 25 women turn up to pray for our troops deployed around the globe. Several times a year, the group, which boasts 150 on the rolls, sponsors gift-box outreach drives to boost the morale of the troops.
"New moms are still coming," says Pam, explaining that America's sons and daughters are still deploying to hot spots ranging from the Middle East to Africa to Asia. "Despite what we may see at times on the news, the wars are not over," she says. "But we moms can sleep at night because we believe in the promise of Psalm 46: 'God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear...'"
Pam has a long track record as a volunteer in Vero Beach and New York City, where she lived before moving to Vero 21 years ago with her husband and son. Following the fall of Saigon in April 1975, she started a ministry to resettle Vietnamese refugees in Manhattan. She followed up in 1979 with an awareness campaign to support the Vietnamese "boat people," a program that included an event on the Circle Line to raise money for the refugees.
Here in Vero Beach, Pam helped found the Teen Writers Workshop and has been involved with Impact100 and St. Paul's Church, where she serves as a Eucharistic Minister. Pam is known professionally as president of College Application Consultants, an independent college advising service that works with students around the world.

THE 140th PREAKNESS RACE SATURDAY, MAY 16, 2015 The second leg of the Triple Crown will be held this Saturday at the Pimlico Track in Baltimore, Maryland. It should be an interesting race since Kentucky Derby winner American Pharoah will once again be competing along with several other Derby contenders for the winner's blanket of Black-Eyed Susans. Race time will be about 6:14 P.M., but NBC will begin coverage around 4 P.M. There's an interesting bit of history about the trophy for this race. Known as the Woodlawn Vase, it was created in 1860 by Tiffany and stands almost a yard tall. It was passed from winner to winner until the outbreak of the Civil War when racing was halted, so the vase was buried to keep it safe from being stolen and melted into shot. It was later dug up again when the competition was resumed in 1866. Now it is considered so valuable that it is kept on permanent display and a $30,000 sterling silver replica is presented to the winner. To browse the Preakness website, Click here. |

Most of you probably know this tip, but we have been asked this several times recently. So...here goes. This is how you can copy and print a post, a recipe, our calendar or whatever you see on Flash. Hold down the left click and move your mouse over the post you wish to copy. This will highlight the area. Now push the control (ctrl) key - probably in your lower left hand corner - simultaneously with the letter P key. A screen should come up giving you a choice of items. Click "Selection". Your printer should begin to print your document. This process can also be used for most other material you want to print from the internet.

FLASH BEAUTY TIP OF THE WEEK Sponsored by: Center for Facial Aesthetics
Why is vitamin C important in your skincare?
Vitamin C is crucial for the body and plays an essential function in maintaining healthy, resilient skin. Other variables like exposure to pollutants, UV light and cigarette-smoke compound the decrease of vitamin C, adding to the signs of aging.
It's all in the collagen production! Among the strongest capabilities of vitamin C is its function to stimulate collagen production, the protein that gives the skin its elasticity and structure. Collagen breaks down, as you age and creases start to form. Stabilizing your skin's amounts of vitamin C can help counteract wrinkle formation by boosting collagen production.
Results from using vitamin C varies with each individual, some see results after 3-4 weeks, others after 8 weeks. You'll achieve the most benefits after continued use for six months.
C-Bright by ZO Medical
Provides a potent dose of pure vitamin C that is stabilized to brighten and re-texture the skin. C-Bright uses the power of pure vitamin C which rapidly exfoliates the skin's surface. Advanced vitamin C goes one step further below the skin surface to prevent new melanin pigment from forming. Powerful antioxidants help defend against environmental triggers that can initiate inflammation. Natural occurring lipid hydrates and supports skin barrier restoration. It also minimizes the appearance of wrinkles!

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
Biscuits with Sausage Gravy
TODAY IS: NATIONAL BUTTERMILK BISCUIT DAY - May 14th
National Buttermilk Biscuit Day is celebrated each year, in the United States, on May 14. This is a food holiday designated to the biscuit. Biscuits are made using baking powder or baking soda as a leavening agent rather than yeast. A typical buttermilk biscuit recipe contains flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, butter and buttermilk. They are often referred to as "quick bread", indicating they do not need time to rise before baking.
Prior to the American Civil War, biscuits emerged by cooks as a cheap addition to meals. While being made, the dough was beaten and folded to incorporate air, which expanded while baking, causing the biscuit to rise. The biscuit soon became popular as the people realized the hardness of the biscuit, compared to a slice of bread, worked better to wipe up gravy on their plates, creating the well known meal, biscuits and gravy.
If you have a favorite biscuit recipe you can use it here. Otherwise, pick up a roll of biscuits at your grocery and follow the instructions. Now prepare this easy gravy.
* one 16 oz. roll of Jimmy Dean sausage with sage (I like medium spice)
* 1-family size can of Campbell's cream of mushroom soup
* 1-1/2 teaspoons of worcestershire sauce
water
Grease pan and brown sausage. Add the soup and worcestershire and a 1/2 cup water. Stir until well mixed and simmer for at least 30 minutes to blend all flavors. You can continue to add a bit of water to create the desired thickness. Serve over warm biscuits. So easy... But so good! You can add some tabasco if you like things a bit hotter.

SECOND ANNUAL YOUTH GUIDANCE BREAKFAST A HUGE SUCCESS On behalf of Youth Guidance and the families we serve, we are happy to announce the success of the 2nd annual 'Help Us Level The Playing Field' Breakfast. The fundraiser, held at the Quail Valley River Club on April 28, raised over $25,000 in gifts and pledges. It was attended by over 100 community members who came out to support and learn about the 40+ year old mentoring program. Monies raised will go toward continued funding of the mentoring academy, and all of the programs that Youth Guidance is offering our at-risk children. Youth Guidance is always happy to welcome new mentors and volunteers. We offer a variety of programs including photography, arts and crafts, learning about our local environment and much more. Children, mentors and volunteers meet weekly to learn a skill, share an interest and spend positive time together. If you are interested, please let us know. If you have a skill or an idea you would like to present, please share it with us. Your commitment can be as little as six weeks or as long as you would like it to be. We look forward to hearing from you! For further information on mentoring, volunteering or registration, please call 772-770-5040.
