As we approach the end of May, we can look back over a lot of special days celebrated this month starting with May Day, then Cinco de Mayo, Mothers' Day, Armed Forces Day, and we still have one more to recognize. Memorial day is Monday, May 25th. Memorial Day is a US holiday to honor and remember those who died while serving in the military. In 1971, Congress declared it a national holiday honors all those who died in any US war. There have been over 2.7 million US military deaths since 1775. The deadliest US War was the Civil War with about 600 thousand deaths. A little side moral ... fighting amongst ourselves can be quite a costly venture. Nearly a 1/3 more died in the Civil War than in WWII where we lost 407,316 lives according to the National World War II Museum. Perhaps General George S. Patton said it best: "It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived." It is customary to fly a US flag at half-staff till noon on Memorial Day. Please do so FLASHERS! Wouldn't it be awesome to walk outside on Memorial Day and see the stars and stripes flying high and proud everywhere we turned! We could be the small Florida city known for everyone flying their flag! I would LOVE that! Let's do it!
Enjoy your long weekend, Flashers, and remember to fly your flag!
Thank you~

A Memorial Day reminder of veterans' free burial benefits
VETERANS' MEMORIAL BENEFITS
The VA takes special care to pay lasting tribute to the memory of Veterans who served and sacrificed and that of their families. VA meticulously maintains 131 VA national cemeteries in 39 states and is adding new sites to accommodate Veterans and loved ones. In a few years, 95 percent of Veterans will have a burial option located within about an hour's drive of their home.Veterans with a qualifying discharge are automatically entitled to VA burial services. Spouses and dependent children are eligible, too.
The following burial services may be provided to Veterans and their loved ones:
Burial in a VA national cemetery
Opening and closing of the grave, burial of cremated remains, or placement in an above-ground vault, also called a columbarium
Perpetual care of the gravesite
Ordering and inscription of a headstone or marker with an inscription
Provision of a burial flag
Award of a Presidential Memorial Certificate
Performance of a committal service with military honors
Transportation of flower arrangements from committal service to gravesite
Eligible Veterans may also receive headstones, markers, or medallions to place in private cemeteries worldwide. Some Veterans may also be eligible for VA burial allowances or use benefits for private cemetery burials that also include a headstone or marker, a burial flag, and a Presidential Memorial Certificate.
How to Apply
Upon the death of the Veteran or his or her spouse or dependent, family members should gather the DD-214 or other discharge papers and visit the VA website at http://explore.va.gov/memorial-benefits and click 'get started' to schedule a burial. Then make arrangements with a funeral home or directly with a VA national cemetery.
Please note that VA gravesites cannot be reserved in advance.

THE MANY FACES OF CAULIFLOWER
Maybe you think you have better things to do than watch a slideshow starring cauliflower, but you might be surprised by watching this! This neglected veggie can change into so many things, I might never be without one again. Did you know it can even become a cream sauce and flavored to your taste.? At only 29 calories and 5 grams of carbs for a full 8 oz. cup, it's a bargain for dieters. To watch, Click here.
FLASH TIP OF THE WEEK
A PRODUCT WE LIKE - VIVA PAPER TOWELS...
YEP ...That's (Right)
Maybe since it's made by Kleenex, that's the reason why this towel is so incredibly soft, yet so durable. My Mom accidentally put it through the washer and dryer recently. It came out perfect. So, she decided to use them again. It's so soft, that in a pinch, you could use it as a tissue, but tough enough to use wet or dry for cleaning and dusting. One lady who reviewed the product online claimed to use it for cleaning her face because it was softer than a washcloth. It's handy as napkins for a barbecue, very absorbent for spills, and great for greasy projects in the garage. Slightly more costly than most brands, but we think it's worth it, and it's available in rolls of half or full sheets.
NOTE: Flash did not receive any compensation for this tip. We just like the product!

NEED A UNIQUE GIFT FOR A BABY, GRAD OR FATHER'S DAY?
Bron-Shoe Company was founded in 1934 in Columbus, Ohio by a young mother, Violet Shinbach. Real baby shoes could be sent to the company and bronzed and then be mounted as bookends or plaques, with or without a picture of the child. Some are made to look like porcelain, - but the idea gradually went out of style. Facebook and other social media have revived it. The company, still owned by Vi's children and grandchildren, now bronzes pacifiers, dog collars and military and sports memorabilia and other items, as well as about 100 pairs of baby shoes each day. An athletic shoe or baseball could make a fun graduation gift, or how about bronzing Dad's golf ball from his best game for Father's Day? Gift certificates are also available. Members of the Vero Beach Power Squadron (VBPS) participate in a national campaign to set a new record for the number of people wearing their life jackets on a specific day, the event is 'Ready Set Wear It.' U.S. Coast Guard statistics show that drowning was the reported cause of death in three-fourths of recreational boating fatalities in 2013, and that 84 percent of those who drowned were not wearing life jackets. Boaters, whether new or experienced, love the adventure and fun of a day spent on the water. However, accidents can happen quickly - so don't just carry a life jacket - 'Wear It!' Florida law requires that you have one life jacket on board the boat for each person.
