HAPPY SUMMER, FLASHERS!
Though June 21 is the official mark of the first day of summer, I feel compelled to wish you a happy summer already! The onset of summer is that time of year when many of you may be celebrating a milestone. It might be a kindergarten, high school, or college graduation, or maybe even a June wedding. If you aren't celebrating, you may be planning a summer vacation. Summer is also the most common time to move. So, whether you're a FLASHER on the move or one who is celebrating or planning, I hope you will continue to find Flash helpful for tips and ideas. We find that our best resource for info and tips is quite often our very own FLASHERS. Have I told you lately that I LOVE to hear from you? Have a tip on a great road trip or staycation, travelling with kids tip, recipe, project?... Please email me anything about anything!! (verobeachflash@gmail.com)
Also, in this issue you will find an "Ooops!" that was supposed to be in last week's issue, and it wasn't the only one. There were quite a few 'Ooopses!' You name it; spelling errors, a duplication, wrong fishing calendar...ooops, ooops, ooops and I'll throw in a YIKES for good measure! Last week I had major computer problems...and my old faithful computer is now 'graveyard dead'. Wednesday nights are always a late night for me as I strive to get everything in FLASH. Last week I was putting on the final touches, with one eye open, at 4:30 A.M. So, I ask for your forgiveness and I apologize for a less than perfect issue. I'll share a secret... I feel certain that all of my many English teachers through the years would enjoy a long and profound chuckle if they only knew what I was doing these days. FLASH may not be the most refined and polished publication you receive, but I assure you it has one of the biggest hearts! I love my FLASHERS and love our non profits and adore our town and I get great enjoyment out of sharing it all with you!
Enjoy yourselves, FLASHERS and don't beat yourself up when you are less than perfect. Perfect people don't get to experience the thrill of improving. How is that for a final thought?
Thank you~

A NOTE FROM A FLASHER
Last week we shared a link to a site where you could order a bronze keepsake. We thought it a perfect site for a special gift for graduation. I received an email this past week from Debbie Avery with an attached picture of her bronze baby shoe. The show was a gift created by the same company we shared with you. If you don't know Debbie she is a volunteer extraordinaire and currently works with the Youth Sailing Foundation! I am thrilled that she sent this to me. It was obviously a keepsake gift she received years ago! Please always let me know if you like something FLASHERS. I truly do love hearing from you when you have tried a recipe, created one of our weekend projects, or have benefited from one of our FLASH tips or ideas. Yes, we even love hearing from you with a 'heads up' correction or with suggestions.
It helps us experience that thrill of improving I mentioned in my 'Editor's Note.' You can always email me at verobeachflash@gmail.com.

THE NEW WORLD TRADE CENTER OPENS TOMORROW!
An Interesting Fact
Since the 2001 bombings of the World Trade Center, it's taken a long time to plan and construct the new building that will open to the public tomorrow. It dominates the other buildings in the New York skyline and the numbers at 1 WTC (as it's called) are symbolic. The building itself is 1,368 feet tall, the same height as the North Tower that fell during the 9/11 attacks. If you add the height of its decorative spire, it measures 1,776 feet, a number you'll recognize as the year we signed the Declaration of Independence. Tickets for the Observatory are $32, but FLASH makes it easy to take a free 360° visual tour of the view. Click here.

Ooops, Flashers! This post was supposed to be in last week when we referred to it in our Fresh Tomato Salsa recipe! Sorry!
DID YOU KNOW?
BOTANICALLY, A TOMATO IS A FRUIT,
but the Supreme Court ruled it a vegetable!
To understand this, you need to know what makes a fruit a fruit, and a vegetable a vegetable. The big question to ask is, DOES IT HAVE SEEDS? If so, then scientifically you have a fruit. HOWEVER, not according to the Supreme Court! In 1893, the high court ruled against the Nix family who sued to recover the fees they spent transporting tomatoes. The Tariff of 1883 required taxes on imported vegetables - but not fruit. The opinion of the court read in part:
"Botanically speaking, tomatoes are the fruit of a vine, just as are cucumbers, squash, beans, and peas. But in the common language of the people, all these are vegetables because they are served at dinner, and not like fruits that are generally served as dessert."
Surprisingly, the court's ruling still stands and continues to affect legal proceedings, frequently to collect back taxes.

 WEEKEND PROJECT
Add Impact With A Shower Curtain Valance!
Creating a shower curtain valance is not as complicated as you might think and it is another one of those weekend projects you will feel was worth the time because of the impact and overall change of appearance and 'feel' of your bath. Click Here for a how-to guide and then put it on your summer project wish list! And of course...Send us before and after pictures. Here's a tip. The Habitat Restore always seems to have valances in varying sizes and styles. Remember that you can always buy a larger valance and reduce the size by cutting out a piece in the middle and joining the pieces back together with a bracket. You'll never know once you cover the now perfect size valance in a fabric of your choice.

POSTER GETS RECORD AUCTION PRICE!
When I hear about auctions like this, it makes it very hard for me to throw ANYTHING away! Recently, an original Grateful Dead' poster titled Skeleton and Roses that advertised their 1966 Avalon Ballroom concert in San Francisco set an auction record of $19,040! Can you imagine how many of those were thrown away?! There are probably still some hanging in some teens' bedrooms. What's even more amazing is you can buy copies of the same poster on the internet for under $8.00!

TODAY'S CHUCKLE
A man driving on the Turnpike stopped at a rest stop to use the bathroom. When he stepped in the stall, he heard a voice coming from the stall next to his ask, "Hey! How's it going?"
He wasn't in the habit of conversing with people in a stall, but not wanting to be rude, he answered, "I'm fine. Thanks for asking."
"What are you doing?" Asked the same voice.
Shocked, he replied, "I don't think that's any of your business!"
Then he heard the same voice again say, "I'm going to have to call you back. Some smart-aleck is answering all of my questions."

FLASH FUN AT KIDSBLAST!
Fun was had by all who attended the second annual KidsBlast on May 16th, sponsored by The Buggy Bunch. This group of ladies does things right and it was an incredible day of hands-on play with thousands in attendance, over 100 businesses, churches, non-profits and schools. The day opened with a prayer and patriotic tunes from the Master's Academy Fife and Drum Corp. The day brought in over $20,000.00 for the local ministry to moms.
FLASH was there with our magic goo and the kids had a BLAST at our KidsBlast booth! If you are looking to keep the kids occupied at some point this summer, the magic goo is the perfect thing to make on those ho-hum, 'what can I do' summer days. The mixture remains a liquid until friction is applied and then it turns into a solid. Pick up a glob and roll it quickly into a solid ball in the palm of your hands only to have it change back quickly into a milky liquid when you open your hands. Feeling ambitious? Fill a kiddie pool with the stuff and have the kids run across it. It will be hard like pavement beneath their feet....stand in the middle and your feet will be submerged. A word of caution. If you do create our magic goo. Don't put it down your drain. Hose it down outside. You don't want to have to post for a good plumber referral on our bulletin board! ;) The mixture proportions are:
1-box cornstarch
1-1/2 cups of water (mix in one cup completely before adding the remaining water. Click Here to watch a video.)
KidsBlast Vero Beach is surly one of the biggest and best children's events on our Treasure Coast. KidsBlast 2016 is scheduled for Saturday February 13, 2016 in Riverside Park. Mark your calendars! :)

On May 13th the Exchange Club of Sebastian dedicated the Freedom Shrine collection to Sebastian Charter Junior High School. Dr. Martha McAdams and assistant principal Marvel Nolan led the assembly of students. Adam Preuss, long time member of Sebastian Exchange, delivered the dedication speech, telling students of the history of the documents.
In 1947, there was a traveling exposition of historic American documents that toured the United States shortly after World War II, fondly referred to as the Freedom Train. Two years later and over 70 years ago, the National Exchange Club began to install permanent displays of the most significant of these historical documents in communities throughout the nation, so that all Americans would have access to their rich heritage. The Sebastian Exchange Club is proud to install this display at Sebastian Charter Junior High School!
