Happy Thursday, FLASHERS!
This week you will find the return of our popular FLASH Deals. We will be offering our deals each week throughout the summer and my hope is that you will find one that appeals to you. It's a fun way to try new things in your own backyard...at nearly half the cost! What could be better? Check out this week's Deal from Sunshine Laundry. Think ahead to when you will return from vacation with a mound of laundry. How nice it would be to extend those carefree hours by dropping off all your laundry to be washed folded and even ironed! The
voucher remains active all summer and expires on August 31st.
Summer is in the air and that means our community children are now all out of school. Oh happy day! It doesn't matter how old you are...the thought of summer conjures a sense of fun, adventure and freedom from schedules! My 26 year old daughter, Allie, confided in me this past week that she REALLY misses having a 'summer'! Allie and my youngest daughter, Lilly, moved in with each other last month and now they both call Atlanta home. Lilly had a fun week, which spilled over to Allie! She recently transferred from the Ritz Carlton in Greensboro, GA to their Buckhead location. She is the concierge on the restricted 'Club Level.' Since she started two weeks ago, she has met: Jimmy Buffett, Hillary Clinton and the Rolling Stones. These names did not intimidate Lilly, but rather excited her! "New friends" was what she said to me. Lilly can strike up a conversation with anyone
and her sense of humor draws you in quickly and sets you at ease. Such was the case a couple of nights ago when she was serving members of the Rolling Stones. To make a long story much shorter...she ended up with two VIP passes and two tickets to their concert. Lilly and Allie had front row seats on 'cloud 9'! Brother William in Miami was quite envious, but participated in the group texting that went on for hours enjoying the moment with his sisters.
Only a few weeks earlier Lilly was questioning everything! What should she do?Should she stay with the Ritz? Look for a job with a non profit? Stay in Greensboro? She really did not want the big city life that Atlanta had to offer. She is my 'country gal' and much prefers the rural world that offers 'visits' to the city. Her boss in Greensboro encouraged her to transfer to Buckhead, made a call, and Lilly was interviewed and transferred within a couple of days. The result? She couldn't be happier! She is having the time of her life (excluding the fender bender she participated in...Atlanta traffic is AWFUL...even for this Miami girl). The moral of today's Editor's Note is, sometimes we have to trust ourselves and be willing to leave the comfort of 'the known' in order to experience a new and exhilarating joy... A joy that we would never have experienced had we not been willing to take the chance! So...enjoy your summer, FLASHERS! Push the envelope and take some chances and unlock a new kind of joy!

A SPECIAL CELEBRATION
FLASH was thrilled to receive the following write up from, Connie Owen, one of our loyal FLASHERS. Happy Birthday Madge!
This past Monday, June 8th, 2015, I was honored and very pleased to be invited to share in the celebration of Madge Longaker's 96th birthday at Green Gables Assisted Living Facility. Her favorite color is yellow, and her smiling, happy face greeted me in her yellow blouse, along with her yellow decorated cake and yellow flower bouquet. Madge was a Florida State University (College for Woman) grad, back in the day, and became a math teacher for children. Another phenomenal, remarkable woman/attendee & pioneer at the party was Alma Lee Loy, our 17th street bridge "namesake". Alma was a student of Madge's, whom she said "worked with students, giving them all the personal attention they needed, until they "got it"." Lois Angell, another participator in this celebration is our oldest registered voter, being the ripe age of 105!
An amazing grouping of people, with great morals, standards & values, that cared about our community, and helped shape it into what it is today. Though much younger, the same can be said about, Elena & Rich Van Benschoten, owners of Green Gables, that have carried on the family tradition of creating a safe happy family atmosphere there, which was reflected on the faces of the many tenants I saw at this party.

AMERICAN PHAROAH vs. SECRETARIAT
TWO AMAZING HORSES!
I hope you watched the Belmont Race for the Triple Crown last Saturday. Breaking the Triple Crown's 37 year draught, it was probably the most exciting horse race since Secretariat ran in 1973. Staying in the lead throughout the race, American Pharoah crossed the finish line in 2.26.65 minutes and 5 1/2 legnths ahead of the others. It was one for the record books. However, the beloved Secretariat still holds the all-time Belmont record, winning by 31 lengths at 2.24 minutes! To watch Secretariat's incredible 1973 win, Click here.

SPRAY PAINTED PATIO TABLE
If you are a frequent FLASH reader, you know how I love to shop at the Habitat Restore! They usually have outdoor patio tables at very reasonable prices. I recently bought one after I broke the top of mine while putting in my new umbrella. (Wasn't a good day!)
Just might do something like this! The design could easily be altered to reveal a polka dot or chevron or stripe design. Let me know if you give it a try! Looks like fun! CLICK HERE

BRUCE/CAITLIN JENNER IT'S A CRAZY WORLD OUT THERE! We've all heard the term 'mid-life crisis,' but the story of Bruce Jenner, the 65 year old who fathered six children by three wives, goes far beyond that term. After his major change from Bruce to Caitlyn Jenner, there are even more tricky day-to-day changes in store, including where she/he eats, drinks and changes clothes at the Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, CA. The Club he joined as Bruce 15 years ago has become his/her home away from home. He golfed there almost every day and established close relationships with his golfing buddies. It's a very exclusive, ritzy club with an initiation fee ranging between $150,000 and $300,000. But now that Bruce is Caitlyn, the rules segregate her from the male members in the locker room and the all male grill. According to the Southern California Golf Association, he had a five handicap. Will this amazing athlete and Olympic Gold Medal winner now be allowed to play as a women? Stay tuned! |
NO LICENSE FRESH WATER FISHING THIS WEEKEND!
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says that the free fishing days provide an excellent opportunity for all parents to take youth fishing, or avid anglers to introduce a friend to fishing without having to purchase a license. On these days, the fishing license requirement is waived for all recreational anglers (residents and non-residents).
All other rules (e.g., seasons, bag and size limits) apply. GO FISHING, FLASHERS!

DID YOU KNOW?
Your Coffee Filter Can Do So Much More!
In addition to their intended purpose; filtering brewing coffee, paper coffee filters have these wonderful, originally unintended uses:
* When potting flowers a coffee filter placed at the bottom of the flower pot will prevent the fresh dirt from
falling out, while allowing water overflow to still seep through the seepage holes.
* Use a coffee filter as a splatter guard in the microwave. * Place a coffee filter in between pieces of good china to prevent scratches. * Run out of paper towels? A coffee filter is a great grease absorber for cooked bacon. * Get rid of the corn silk easily from that corn on the cob with a dampened coffee filter run
down the length of the corn.

TODAY'S CHUCKLE
What would Jesus do?
A mother was making pancakes for her young sons. The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake. Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson. "If Jesus were sitting here, he would say, 'Let my brother have the first pancake. I can wait'." The five year old turned to his younger brother and said, "Why don't you pretend you're Jesus?"

FLASH VIDEO OF THE WEEK
Surf's Up In The Desert
The tech world is influencing the surf world. Surf Parks are popping up around the world and surfing is about to be 'Disneyfied'. From Kansas to Dhabi to Spain to Russia, artificial wave parks seem to be the 'wave' of the future! How does it work? At one park you are given an iPad to scroll through a set of waves employees have programmed. Then you create your own waves, tapping a touch screen to sequence a series of rides-a peeling left beach break wave, then a right point break and so on. You press a button and pressurized air is pumped into wave generating chambers that sit flush on the floor of the 4-foot by 8-foot scale model of the PerfectSwell wave machine. The software controls valves that push out the pressurized water to create the different waves in the sequence you've programmed. Amazing! Check out this website that covers the blossoming artificial wave industry. You might find a fun spot for a family vacation this summer. :)

FLASH BEAUTY TIP OF THE WEEK Sponsored by: Center for Facial Aesthetics
BEAUTY TIPS FOR FLASHERS IN THEIR 30's
Do
* Exercise and practice stress reduction. Choose the method that fits into your life best - it can be anything from yoga to running and meditation.
* Choose anti-aging products with synergistic, multiple ingredients, antioxidants and vitamin A. Antioxidants and retinoids help reverse the signs of aging by decreasing inflammation in the skin and decreasing the appearance of brown spots, uneven skin texture, fine lines and wrinkles.
* Use a moisturizer for areas of dryness. Look for hyaluronic acid in a moisturizer. Hyaluronic acid can be found naturally in most body cells, but is found in greatest concentration in the skin, where almost 50 percent of the body's hyaluronic acid can be found. Young skin contains large amounts of hyaluronic acid, which provides continuous moisture to the skin. It binds up to 1000 times its weight in water. With age, the skin's ability to produce hyaluronic acid decreases.
* Address the neck, chest and backs of the hands as you would your face. These areas can give away your true age!
DON'T
* Skimp on sleep. It is an important part of our lives and without it, we can slow down thinking and reflexes, gain weight and weaken immunity.Forget to exfoliate. As we age, our cell turnover rate slows down. This is the process in which our skin cells travel from the lowest layer of our epidermis to the top most superficial layer to be shed off. When we are teens, cells turn over approximately every 21 to 28 days. As we age, it slows down to 30 to 40 days and over the age of 50, it can even take 40 to 80 days. This slower skin cell turnover allows dead skin cells to accumulate on the surface of our skin, giving it a dull appearance.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
A Spring take on Carbonara Pasta with fresh green peas.
Ingredients
- 2 cups fresh green peas (you may also use frozen), divided
- 1 large egg
- 1 egg yolk
- 1/4 cup Parmesan, grated (1 ounce), plus more for serving
- 1/4 cup half and half or cream
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
- 4 ounces of pancetta or bacon, cubed
- 1/2 medium yellow onion, chopped
- 1 package pasta
Instructions
to make the pea sauce - Steam the peas until they are tender (about 5 minutes). Set aside to cool. In a blender or food processor, blend, 1 1/2 cups of the cooked and cooled peas, egg, egg yolk, cheese and half & half until smooth. Season with salt and pepper.
- In a large skillet over medium high heat, cook pancetta or bacon until browned (about 6-8 minutes). If using bacon, cook slightly longer and drain excess fat. Add onions and cook until soft, another 5 minutes.
- Cook pasta according to package instructions until tender but still firm to the bite. Drain, reserving 1/2 cup pasta liquid. Add pasta and extra peas (1/2 cup) to the skillet with onions and pancetta and toss. Remove skillet from heat and add pea sauce. Toss quickly to avoid the eggs from scrambling. Add the reserved pasta water as needed to thin out the sauce (I use all of the 1/2 cup).
- Transfer to serving bowls and top with extra Parmesan.

VERO BEACH POWER SQUADRON PRESENTS LAGOON AWARD TO
VBHS STUDENT
The Vero Beach Power Squadron has partnered with the Coastal Conservation Association and the Vero Beach Sunrise Rotary Club in an oyster mat project to expand the oyster population in the Indian River Lagoon. Oysters are important because each one cleans and clarifies an astounding 50 gallons of water each day.
Expanding the oyster population is no easy task. In addition to over 100 of its own members, the Power Squadron was successful in obtaining hundreds of student and adult volunteers to help. But, one student, Vero Beach High School Junior, George Katilus, clearly stood out as a major contributor. Using social media, word of mouth, fliers, and printed & electronic newspapers, he advertized and organized five major project events at the Squadron building over a 12-month period. To recognize George's leadership and organization skills, the Power Squadron presented him with the Squadron's Save the Lagoon Committee Award. After presenting the award, Squadron Commander, Robert Sheridan stated that, "George reinforces my faith in our young people who will be our future leaders."
