HAPPY 4th OF JULY, FLASHERS!
Yep! This Saturday will be the 4th of July, one of my favorite holidays. If you've been a FLASHER for a while, you know that I am quite patriotic. I was looking forward to my road trip to DC that I mentioned last week. Plans have changed though and I will not be able to travel at that time. However, the anticipation of my trip had me recalling one of my fondest 'life memories' this past week. In 1981 I was extremely fortunate to travel to DC with my Mom and sisters to President Reagan's inauguration. Mom had been a delegate at the convention when Reagan was nominated, so we were included in several of the inaugural special events. Did you know there is more than one inaugural ball? I think that year there were seven. I guess no one place can accommodate all the invited guests, so the Reagans and the Bushes visited each of them. The ball we were to attend was at the hotel across the street from where we were staying, but the front entrance was about a block away. Too close to take a taxi, but too far to walk in the snow in sub zero 'feel-like' temps for this gang of gals from Miami. The bellman at our hotel directed us to the garage entrance which was directly across the street and informed us that there was an elevator we could take from there. We followed his directions and were the only ones waiting for the elevator when some men in dark suits approached and said, "Ladies, would you mind stepping back, we have some traffic coming through this way." We did as he said as a limo pulled up and out stepped our new President and the First Lady. He smiled and nodded to us as she gave a little wave and they entered the elevator. You can imagine our excitement! It was like we had a front row seat at this very special event! We took the next elevator up to the ball which was very crowded. Having had our own private up-front and close encounter, we didn't stay too long. Luck hit twice though because on our way out the same sort of thing happened. Again we were waiting on the garage elevator when it opened and two dark-suited men came out and again we were asked to step back. This time it was the Vice President and Mrs. Bush! What a night and what a memory!
Now...join me back to today's reality. The recent torrential storms of late have cooled the temps just a bit; don't ya think? Undoubtedly we have all felt the summer heat though! The 'Dog Days of Summer' begin tomorrow on July 3rd and continue through August 11th. This stretch of time is considered to be the hottest days of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. According to the Farmer's Almanac, the highest temperature of the day will be about 4:00 p.m., not at 12:00 noon as you might think and the lowest will occur about sunrise, not at midnight. As we sweat out the coming weeks, I thought I would give you something to smile about. This 'Summer Dog' my new pup, Gracie, will always make me giggle. My daughter taught her to sit and as my other daughter and I sat on the couch witnessing this new accomplishment, Lilly said, "Mom, do you see what I see when you look at Gracie?" Indeed I do!... Do you? Nature is wonderful and miraculous...isn't it! Love it and its subtle messages! Now you can chuckle when you think of Gracie and the 'Dog Days of Summer'. Enjoy your 4th FLASHERS and count your lucky American stars that you call the USA home!
Thank you~

Bonds can be risky, too. When interest rates go up, (we are in a very low interest rate environment right now) the value of your bonds will generally be worth less. So be aware that bonds are interest rate sensitive.

Bond prices and yields are subject to change based upon market conditions and availability. If bonds are sold prior to maturity, you may receive more or less than your initial investment. There is an inverse relationship between interest rate movements and fixed income prices. Generally, when interest rates rise, fixed income prices fall and when interest rates fall, fixed income prices rise.

4th OF JULY TRIVIA Here are some interesting and little known facts about this holiday: The 4th of July was not declared a national holiday until 1941. When the United States became a country in 1776, there were only about 2.5 million people living in the country. Last Fourth of July 2014, the population was around 318.9 million. The youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence was 26-year-old Edward Rutledge. The oldest signer was Benjamin Franklin. He was 70. Most of the signers were in their 30s and 40s. The American flag was adopted on June 14, 1777 |

WATER PINATAS
This Water Balloon pinata is a fun way to cool off on a hot summer day. The kids will love this and it can be the perfect addition to a July 4th celebration! Use regular latex balloons instead of water balloons and instead of tying them onto one string, you can tie them individually around the yard. Another idea is to have this at the beginning of an event with 'relay fun'! You can place a team number inside the balloon. (Waterproof it by sealing it between clear strapping tape) This seems a fair and fun way to select teams and a way to make sure each child only pops one balloon. Once teams are selected...Let the games begin! Need suggestions: Egg on a spoon relay, 3-legged race, water balloon toss, ... Click Here for more ideas.

WEEKEND PROJECT
Stump Tables
The recent storms we experienced hit in Georgia as well. My husband told me that we have a couple of trees down on the farm and I am thinking I will transform them into rustic tables. Cutting the stumps level will be the trick. You can paint the stumps in soft beach pastel colors and voila... You will have a rustic-chic décor that would be costly if found in a designer's showroom.

Get Rid Of Pesky Fruit Flies
Enjoying the wonderful fresh fruits that are the treat of the summer season, but are getting annoyed with the fruit flies they attract? We have the solution...and it really works! My mangoes and tomatoes began to attract quite a few fruit flies and this is how I got rid of them. Pour apple cider vinegar (must be apple cider) into a small dish and add a couple of drops of dish soap. Those little pesky flies are attracted to the solution and that will be the end of your problem!

HOW TO TELL IF YOU EMAIL HAS BEEN OPENED
Did you ever wonder if anyone actually opened your email? Here's a way to confirm that your email was delivered and to be informed of when an email was opened by the recipient. This is only going to work in the full version of Microsoft Outlook but other email systems might have similar options.
1. Start a new email by clicking on "New." Fill in the "TO:" line and type up your email.
2. Before you send your email go to "Options" and check the box for "Request delivery receipt..." to get an email, confirming that the email was sent. Check "Request a read receipt..." to be informed when the recipient opens the email. Once you have done this click "Close."
Try sending yourself an email today with these options set on it. It's a quick and easy way to check out how this works. You will notice that when someone opens an email like this they get a message about sending a read receipt to the sender. You should be aware that the recipient will be aware that you are tracking when they open your email.

MORE 4th OF JULY TRIVIA
THIS ONE ON OUR NATIONAL BIRD
THE BALD EAGLE
Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson served on the committee that picked the eagle for the national seal. [Franklin wanted the turkey!]
Bald eagles live only in North America.
Bald eagles are not, and never were bald. The term comes from when "bald" meant "white-headed".
Their maximum speed: 40 mph, but over 100 mph while in a dive!
They can lift roughly half their body weight.
Bald eagles mate for life, but if one dies, the survivor will accept a new mate.
It is a felony to shoot an eagle.

TODAY'S CHUCKLE
Abraham Lincoln had an endless supply of jokes, tall tales, and anecdotes and he had a very quick wit himself. Self-deprecating humor came naturally to Lincoln. Once after being called "two-faced," he quipped, "If I had two faces, why would I be wearing this one?"

FLASH VIDEO OF THE WEEK
Instead of a video this week...We give you these amazing
floral flag photos!
Origins: The floral flag pictured above was planted in the City of Lompoc, California, as a tribute by the Bodger Seed Company after the 9/11 attacks of September 2001. It quickly became one of that town's most popular features.
The flag was made of 400,000 larkspur flowers, measures 740 feet by 390 feet and covers 6.65 acres . Each of the fifty stars was 24 feet in diameter, and each of the thirteen stripes was 30 feet high.

DID YOU KNOW?
CHOCOLATE MILK IS GOOD FOR CHILDREN
Chocolate milk has come under fire for its sugar content. That's because the food label on the carton is often misinterpreted. According to the DAIRY COUNCIL OF CALIFORNIA, this is what you need to know to correctly read a milk food label:
- All milk (flavored and unflavored) has naturaly occurring sugar (lactose) in it that comes from the cow. In an eight-ounce glass of milk you will find 12 grams of lactose.
- Chocolate milk has between 8 and 12 additional grams of sugar added. So, about one-half of the sugar in chocolate milk is naturally-occurring lactose found in all milk.
- Only about 60 calories in chocolate milk are from added sugars, which is small relative to the powerhouse of nutrients it provides.
It has been confirmed that children who drink flavored milk:
1) drink more milk overall
2) have better quality diets
3) do not have higher intakes of added sugar or total fat
4) are just as likely to have a healthy body composition as children who do not
consume flavored milk.
.
That is why health organizations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics approve of flavored milk in children's diets. With such a relatively small amount of calories coming from added sugars, chocolate milk offers a powerhouse of nutrients important for children's growth and development, and for athletes recovering from sporting events.
.
Note: Always read the food labels from your local dairy since chocolate milk formulas vary between processors.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
Brownie Ice Cream Cup Sundaes
Ice cream sundae bars are the perfect victory dessert. Always fun to create and more fun to eat! These easy brownie bowls are created by mixing and baking a box of brownies by following directions on the box. I always undercook my brownies by a few minutes to keep them moist and chewy. When you take them out of the oven use a cupcake pan that is the same size and press it down on top of the warm brownies to create an indention. When serving a number of guests...Here's a tip. Scoop ice cream before your party and store them in cupcake liners, on cookie sheets in the freezer. You can have several different flavors scooped and ready to offer your guests. Have several toppings to wow your guests such as: chocolate or caramel sauce, sprinkles, bananas, cookie crumbles, nuts, whipped cream and of course a cherry on top! YUM! :)

MISSIONARIES RETURN FROM BELIZE
The Rev. Jon Robbins and 13 missionaries from St. Paul's Church, Vero Beach, recently returned from a mission trip to Belize City, Belize, Central America to provide vital health care, construction, and Vacation Bible School to over 3000 school children and their families. The Vacation Bible School team shared Bible lessons, games, and crafts. The fully accredited and licensed medical team offered free examinations and treated children with ear infections, colds, fungal infections of the skin, bacterial infections of the skin, and provided checkups for healthy babies as well. They treated over 1000 patients in five days, and provided free prescription drugs to those in need. The construction team completed an extensive painting project and fully refurbished a non-working restroom. And at the end of the week, the missionaries delivered over 2,000 new backpacks with school supplies to each student and teacher at the four schools.
