HAPPY VACATION, FLASHERS!

So sorry for the delay in deliver of this week's FLASH, FLASHERS! Wow! The shut down of Wall Street, grounded flights, delayed FLASH... What next? Ha!

It's vacation time! I know that I've told you before that my favorite mode of travel is a road trip. I think this started when I was a child, long before there were so many safety restrictions on traveling with children.  (Mom has said we would probably have never gone anywhere if she'd had to deal with five car seats.) My parents found that a single bed mattress fit perfectly  in the back of our station wagon when the seats were folded down. My four sisters and I each brought our own pillows and would stay back there for the entire trip. With all of our luggage tied to the rack on top of the car, we had plenty of space to play all sorts of games, there was lots of singing and napping was simple with our mattress and pillows so accessible. What a blast! So many found memories! Except for the time I was forgotten at one of our stops.  I don't really remember it, so I can't say it was scared me for life. But, Mom apologizes to this day for getting a mile down the road before feeling my absence. I guess that's what happens when you are one of five girls! I was the middle child in the line up. That meant that I did not hold the 'senior status' necessary for the harmonizing role on our music repertoire. I just idolized my oldest sister and her ability to 'shoulder' such a responsibility with such finesse...what talent! I may not have had the chance for the lead singing role, but I did frequently 'earn' my 'right' to sit up front; flanked between Mom and Dad! Yep.. just the THREE of us ... up front ... singing 'The Bear Went Over The Mountain' when we caught a glimpse of the first mountain on our way to North Carolina! What fun! There's nothing like traveling down memory lane and my wish is that these summer days will provide you with similar memories!

I'm glad I was a child before there were so many safety concerns and regulations. I understand the need for protection in today's society, but it's still sad that  young children today may never enjoy the freedom of walking alone to the house of a friend who lives several blocks away; - or ride a bike without a helmet and feel the wind in your hair;  - or  go to the playground alone with a friend. Boy, we would be miles away on our bikes meeting neighbors that reached far beyond the house next door. You certainly can't ride in the back of a station wagon without the confines of straps and locks! I can only imagine how cooperative I would have been! Being forgotten at a road-side stop may not have been accidental! :) Having to wait 12 years before seeing the view and the road ahead from the front seat would probably be the worst! I loved my spot there where the safety was provided by the arm of a loving parent! Before I get all kinds of emails...let me state again that I understand the need for the laws today, but I also think its 'kinda' sad! But I guess today's generation will have other memories. Games on cell phones and movies in the car without having to go to a drive-in theatre. What fun those were! But that's for another editor's note! Enjoy your summer, FLASHERS. I hope you find some tid-bits of helpful info in this issue.

Thank you~

CURRENT TRIVIA ~ WRONG NUMBER PAYS BIG!

It was recently decided that Time Warner Cable has to pay a customer $229,500 for placing 153 automated calls to her phone in less than a year. It had the wrong number. OUCH! Should we all pray for a wrong number? Ha! :)

FLYING WITH YOUR LAPTOP COMPUTER
The Travel Safety Administration (TSA) recommends that you carry your laptop on board  instead of putting it in your checked baggage and it doesn't count as your allowed carry-on luggage. However, if you carry a purse or diaper bag, it might be considered a third item. For TSA guidelines for this and security requirements, Click here.

  VACATION SUN DAMAGE

Chances are you will be outside more during your vacation. You know to use sunscreen, wear hats, etc., but if you or  one of your family members are lax about that sort of thing, this slideshow from WebMD will probably scare you into protecting yourself. It has detailed pictures of different types of pre-cancerous and malignant skin areas so you will know what to watch for.                                        Click here.

Nobody likes to think about death.  But preparing your finances is a kind and loving thing to do for your loved ones.  Most young couples with children should have life insurance.  Term life insurance is relatively inexpensive if you are young and healthy.  Also, a trust and/or a will should be in place.

These policies have exclusions and/or limitations.  The cost and availabililty of life insurance depend on factors such as age, health and the type and amount of insurance purchased.  As with most financial decisions, there are expenses associated with the purchase of life insurance.  Policies commonly have mortality and expense charges.  In addition if a policy is surrendered prematurely, there may be surrender charges and income tax implications.  Guarantees are based on the claims paying ability of the insurance company.

CELBRITIES' SUMMER HOMES

It's always fun to check out the lifestyles of the famous.  We know they like to have private get-away spots, but most of these 10 homes are a little too much. I know Brad and Angelina have a lot of kids, but do they really need a 35 room palace on 1,000 acres? To see their place and others,

DID YOU KNOW?

TRAVEL IS GOOD FOR YOU!

The U.S. Travel Association has released research that shows these surprising benefits from travel:

1. Travel can help improve your problem-solving skills.
2. One out of eight jobs in the U.S. depends on travel and tourism.
3. Taking a vacation can lower your risk of heart disease.
4. Studies show that money spent on travel makes you happier than money spent

    on material goods.
5. Benefits of travel are almost immediate. After only a day or two, 89% of people

    experience significant drops in stress.
6. Travel has been shown to help aid those suffering from depression.
7. And travel has been shown to promote overall brain health of the same sort of

physical and cognitive benefits as crossword puzzles and museum visits.

  BAD BUGS...PROTECT YOURSELF!

We don't usually publish two slideshows in the same issue, but we think the skin cancer one above and this one are equally important for vacationers. Here are pictures of dangerous bugs from Deer Ticks to the Black Widow Spider along with the damage they can do, and what to do to protect yourself.

VACATIONING OVERSEAS?

No doubt by now you have probably heard about the financial crisis in Greece that has closed the stock market there and limited ATM cash withdrawals. If you are among the many who have planned or were thinking about a trip abroad this summer that includes Greece, the Conde Nast Travel website has some good tips for you. The U.S. State Department has issued a travel alert regarding the shaky Greek money situation. Luckily, the State Department does not recommend canceling travel, but instead suggests caution. "U.S. citizens are encouraged to carry more than one means of payment (cash, debit cards, credit cards), and make sure to have enough cash on hand to cover emergencies and any unexpected delays," read the alert.  Nevertheless, it says there is no reason to cancel plans because the financial controls are for Greeks wanting to send money out of the country, not for people wanting to bring money into Greece. They will be happy to get your money, so you might even get some real bargains on prices. However, the release cautioned visitors to be on the lookout for political unrest, such as protests or demonstrations that could inconvenience travelers.

While traveling, you know you're really lost when the GPS voice tells you to "Stop and ask for directions!"

FLASH TIP OF THE WEEK
PAINTING A ROOM?
Have you ever bought paint and then found it didn't look like the same color on the wall? Here's a good idea! Buy a paint sample and paint a large piece of white poster board. Use masking tape to place it on the wall. You can then move it around the room to see how the light and shadows affect the color.

  RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Summertime is a good time for picnics, and here are some different ideas to put in the picnic basket.

1. Pack individual servings of Potato Salad and Cole Slaw in hollowed out tomato or red or green pepper shells and wrap in foil.

2. Easy sandwiches can be made with Pita Pockets. Just cut the top off the pita bread with scissors and fill with your chicken or tuna salad or other filling. Stand up the pockets in a loaf pan and cover with foil to transport.

3. Skewers of Fresh Fruit Travel well and are easy to eat.

4. Glamourize Deviled Eggs with different toppings like a little sour cream and caviar, bacon chips, or grated cheese.

NOTE: Halved Deviled Eggs travel well in styrofoam egg cartons

5. You can also add different fillings to your egg yolk mixture. Try canned salmon with finely chopped onion, or crab meat, or the avocado egg recipe below.

                                     AVOCADO DEVILED EGGS

NOTE: Use one or two fewer yolks for filling.

Directions

Scoop egg yolks into a bowl; add avocado, mayonnaise, lime juice, cayenne pepper, garlic salt and a dash of hot sauce. Mash egg yolk mixture until filling is evenly combined. Fill each egg white and top with a sprig of watercress or a jalapeno slice.

On Saturday, June 13, 2015, the new 9.23 Community Center of Christ Church Vero Beach hosted an inaugural event to honor our local veterans and their families.  This free event featured a salute to veterans, service songs and a delicious BBQ lunch.  Approximately 65 veterans of all ages were in attendance. The oldest veteran was 101 and moved to Indian River County in early 2015 to be near his nephew, also a veteran.

The 9.23 CC/CCVB Kitchen Ministry Team, lead by Connie Boyter, worked with the Veterans Council to get word of this event out to local veterans.  The mission of this event was simply to throw a party for the veterans and build a relationship.  They will continue to look for ways to reach out to veterans and their families.

Prosek is known for his unusually vibrant, life size depictions that capture the beauty and vitality of our "finny friends." He prepared to paint Florida favorites such as the Snook, the Cobia and the Pompano, by making trips to the locations where these fish can be directly observed, including the Treasure Coast. "If I see my reflection in the eyeball of the fish or whatever, I'll paint that in," Prosek explains. "It's me and the fish. I've kind of described [the paintings] as self-portraits in a way."
