editor's note poka-dot

Happy Thursday, Flashers!

No doubt you've noticed  all the 'back to school' merchandise in the stores. Yep! It will soon be that time again. The first day for our local schools is August 24th, and the teachers will have to go back a week earlier. However, there's one group that could be starting next week. Some of you will be taking your son or daughter to college for the first time. How well I remember those trips! The car was always so full that there was not a lot of seating space left. Most of the schools allow students to bring refrigerators, TVs and small appliances now, as well as their clothes and personal items. They'll also need bed linens, pillows, blankets, towels, and don't forget a bed pad. (Some of those mattresses have probably been there since you were in school!). If there's a chain store in your hometown, and the same one in the college town, here's an idea: Visit your local store and find an item you like, then go online to order it for pick-up at the store near the college. As tempting as it is for your child to buy before they go, most college towns have chain stores with the same merchandise, as well as boutiques with fun items unique to that area or school. (Since space in the car will be tight, you'll find some efficient tips for packing your own clothes in a post below.) While you're shopping, watch for those 3M Command removable hanging strips. Students aren't  allowed to put nails in the wall, and these work great. You can use more than one to support heavier weight items like bulletin boards  and large ones will support up to 16 pounds. The colorful painter's tape is also useful to 'frame' photos on the wall and it comes off easily. Other handy items are over-the-door hook types. You can find shoe bags that can hold more than just shoes. They're excellent for socks, undies, cosmetics and  other small items. Full length mirrors also come with over-the-door hooks.  These are things I learned from taking my two daughters to college. My son was much easier. Guys don't care about things like over-the-door mirrors or towels that match. And you may have to tell them that you packed an extra set of sheets because one set is not supposed to stay on the bed for the whole semester! Ahhh,...memories.

Thank you~

THERE'S STILL
SOME SUMMER LEFT!

This is a fun thing to do with the kids that will be a win-win in the end because it will provide hours of outside fun for the kids without you having to endure the age-old question...What can we do mom? I found this on the Princess Pinky Girl site and thought I would share it with you all! I hope you enjoy! When school starts back you can make learning fun by practicing math outside with your sidewalk chalk. Not a bad way to keep skills sharp over the summer too! :)

Here is what you need:
  • Plaster of Paris (dry powder, not mixed.  They have this at Michaels)
  • Tempera Paint - have fun with the colors!
  • Silicon Mold
  • Water
  • Disposable Cups
  • Plastic Spoons
Here is what you do:
  • For each color you will need a separate cup.
  • Fill each cup with 3/4 cup of water.
  • Add 1/4 cup of paint
  • Add 1 cup of Plaster of Paris
  • Mix well
  • Pour mixture into molds (I cleaned up the edges with a paper towel)
  • If you want to layer colors just pour the first color in and add the second or third on top (see picture below - don't mix them)
  • Let dry for 24 hours.  Remove them from the mold (be careful because they are still soft and you need to carefully pop them out).  Let them dry outside the molds for an additional 24 hours!
  • Presto - your own homemade sidewalk chalk!!!!  So fun!!

DID YOU KNOW?

Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, used vinegar for wound cleaning over two thousand years ago. Yes, vinegar has been around a very long time! Reader's Digest has 95 other uses for vinegar and many we had never heard of before. For instance, did you know it can remove marks left by wet glasses on wood furniture. Just mix equal parts vinegar and olive oil and apply it with a soft cloth while moving with the wood grain. Use another clean, soft cloth to shine it. To get white water rings off leather furniture, dab them with a sponge soaked in full-strength white vinegar. To see the complete list, Click here.

Annuities are not for everyone.  They are typically good for people who have maxed out their retirement contributions, but would like to grow their money tax deferred.  They are insurance products and are a contract between the buyer and the company that underwrites the policy.  There are many working parts to an annuity these days.  They may offer a stream of income for a fixed number of years or for life.  Careful consideration should be made when purchasing annuities.  Fees can be high and may erode a person's investment returns.  Also, annuities often have high penalties for early withdrawal.  As with all investments, risk tolerance and investment objectives must be compatible with the purchase.  Be sure to understand the annuity before you put your hard earned money into it.

FLASH TIP OF THE WEEK
CRAZY WAYS TO USE TRASH BAGS!

Like make an outdoor shower?!! This slideshow has some great ideas for using trash bags for camping, but it has some practical uses for non-campers as well.  I especially liked seeing how you can  make an emergency poncho complete with a hood. With those unexpected  afternoon rainstorms we've had, you may want to keep one handy! You might also want to put one in your child's backpack when he heads back to school. Send a few along with your college student, too. Click here.

FLASH BEAUTY TIP OF THE WEEK

Summer days means barefoot fun! Barefoot fun can leave your feet dry and cracked.  Here is a wonderful 'home remedy' that will put the pretty and fun back in your step. Give it a try! It really works!

In case you can't read the  concoction in the graphic... Here are the portions.

*  1/4 Cup Listerine (Any Kind)

*  1/4 Cup Vinegar

*  1/2 Cup Warm Water

(Soak feet for 10 - 15 minutes. Then use your stone to slough off the dead skin. Some say it practically falls off. I didn't find that to be the case .)

WARHOL PAINTING SELLS FOR OVER $32 MILLION!

Want to make a one dollar bill turn into more than $32 million? Andy Warhol did that with his 1962 silk-screen painting "One Dollar Bill (Silver Certificate)," which auctioned July 1st, at Sotheby's in London. Remember Andy? He's the artist that also painted a Campbell Soup can, and four strangely colored pics of Marilyn Monroe, all on one canvas.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

APPLE DUMPLINGS

(Recipe from The Pioneer Woman)

This is a great recipe to try with so many luscious fruits!  You can make it healthier by topping with a squirt of light whipped cream rather than ice cream. We used apples!

Ingredients

  • 2 whole Granny Smith Apples
  • 2 cans (8 Oz. Cans) Crescent Rolls
  • 2 sticks Butter
  • 1-1/2 cup Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla
  •  Cinnamon, To Taste
  • 1 can (12 Oz.) Mountain Dew Soda
Preparation Instructions

Peel and core apples. Cut each apple into 8 slices each. Roll each apple slice in a crescent roll. Place in a 9 x 13 buttered pan.

Melt butter, then add sugar and barely stir. Add vanilla, stir, and pour entire mixture over apples. Pour Mountain Dew around the edges of the pan. Sprinkle with cinnamon and bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes. Serve with ice cream, and spoon some of the sweet sauces from the pan over the top.

Prosek is known for his unusually vibrant, life size depictions that capture the beauty and vitality of our "finny friends." He prepared to paint Florida favorites such as the Snook, the Cobia and the Pompano, by making trips to the locations where these fish can be directly observed, including the Treasure Coast. "If I see my reflection in the eyeball of the fish or whatever, I'll paint that in," Prosek explains. "It's me and the fish. I've kind of described [the paintings] as self-portraits in a way." The exhibition of Prosek's paintings will on view from June 6 through September 6, 2015, in the Museum's Schumann and Titelman Galleries. For more information call: phone (772) 231-0707
