HAPPY THURSDAY, FLASHERS!
Remember that childhood prank when someone would stick a note on the back of another kid that read, "Kick me?" Well, I think someone put one on my car that said, "Hit me." A few weeks ago, someone made a right turn from the center lane on US-1. Guess who she turned right into? She claimed that she thought she was in the right-hand lane. Nope! She wasn't. As a result my car visited America's Best Auto Body for 3 weeks. I got it back last week. (By the way...I LOVED America's Best Auto Body! They are terrific!) I had my car back for just a few days... Yea, you know what's coming... This past Monday someone forgot to stop and rear-ended me when I was idling at the traffic light. The other driver couldn't have been nicer and my car is heading back to 'car camp' at America's Best Auto.
The situation goes beyond the inconvenience and the insurance cost. You see, I love my car and we've been together a very, very long time. It's a 2002 Toyota Sequoia that I bought new. It now has over 218,000 miles on it. Before these two accidents, I had never been in an accident! Yes, I survived the insane traffic of Miami without a scratch. It wasn't until I landed permanently in the Vero Beach Community, with lower insurance rates, that things changed. I've never been one who wanted the 'newest' in anything, whether cars, clothes, gizmos, etc. Comfort and reliability are more important to me. That's why I hang out in my old cozy t-shirt and sweats when I'm home, and why I love my car. It's been like "The Little Engine That Could" and it has never let me down on those frequent road trips I've told you about in the past. Now, what do I do? Do I fix it again, trade it in, or just bury it and hold a memorial service? The eulogy would have to include many memories of driving my now adult children to school, parties, soccer practice, girl scouts, road trips etc. So many fabulous memories! My youngest was in the 4th grade when I drove up to the carpool lane in my new, shiny Sequoia for the first time. I remember so vividly how excited she was...The type of excitement that only a new car can provide. She has now been out of college for a couple of years and is living in Atlanta and working at the Ritz. So, you can surmise that many of my happiest life moments have taken place in my car! If you are in the thick of those crazy years, cherish them! They are busy...but oh so special.
Drive Safely FLASHERS!

DID YOU KNOW?
When was the first universal credit card used?
The first credit card that could be used at a variety of establishments, was introduced by the Diners' Club, Inc. in 1950. (Prior to that, you had to use cash.) Another major card of this type, known as a travel and entertainment card, was established by the American Express Company in 1958. Both those cards had to be paid off in full each month, so you couldn't make a "minimum payment." (Consequently, there was also no debt with high interest.) The option of maintaining a revolving minimum balance didn't come about until 1966 when Bank of America introduced a new card which eventually became VISA.
A lady living in Manhattan recently tried a two week experiment when she used only cash, and found out she spent less. Can using cash instead of credit also save you money? To try her experiment, Click here

Ever wonder how long it would take for you to be a millionaire? A very simple way to calculate is using the "Rule of 72". If you divide 72 by the interest rate, you will find out how long it would take your money to double. For example, if you had $500,000 and the interest rate is 9%, 72 divided by 9= roughly 8 years to double to $1 million.
Now all you have to do is get $500,000 and find someone to give you 9% interest! ☺

MINI LOBSTER SEASON
Mini lobster season is underway. It began at midnight yesterday and doesn't end until midnight tonight, so there's still time to get in on the fun. The per person limit is 12 and you will need to have a salt water fishing license and a lobster stamp. The regular season begins a week from today on August 6th. For details about licenses and fees from the state website,
NOTE: If you're lucky enough to get some lobster, to add a touch of elegance, serve them with our Mock Hollandaise recipe below for dipping.

FLASH TIP OF THE WEEK
COOKING LOBSTER
For some reason, most people cook lobster with the shell on, but it's not necessary. You can split the tale before cooking and remove the meat. This way you don't have to deal with hot shells and you can boil, broil, bake, grill or cut it in bite size pieces and sauté it. If you do want to cook it the traditional way, here is a chart that will help you wit your cooking time. A lobster tail is finished cooking when the meat is opaque or no longer translucent.

AIRLINE LUGGAGE FEES
You have probably heard of all the new restrictions on luggage and the accompanying fees many airlines are now charging. The charts at this website for both checked and carry-on baggage might be worth printing for future travel plans. Almost all domestic airlines now charge a fee for the first checked bag, and the site lists those, as well as size and weight restrictions. Foreign airlines are also on the list. Click here.

WATER IN THE LAGOON SAFE WITH CAUTION
Several news sources have reported the dangers of getting infections from bacteria found in the Indian River Lagoon that have frightened residents and tourists. While caution should be used, The Florida Department of Health states, "do not enter the water if you have fresh cuts or scrapes. Water and wounds don't mix." The bacterium in question is 'vibrio vulnificus', a naturally occurring bacteria in warm, brackish seawater. For more info...Click here |

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
MOCK HOLLANDAISE SAUCE
I think almost everything tastes better with Hollandaise. Eggs benedict is one of my favorite meals, and I love the sauce on asparagus or broccoli. It's also delicious on lobster, crab cakes or other seafood. The only problem is that it can be tricky to prepare. There's a blender version that's good, but this version is even easier because the Mayonnaise has already mixed some of the ingredients for you. The main ingredients in both Mayonnaise and Hollandaise are eggs and lemon juice, but Mayonnaise has a little oil where Hollandaise has butter, and you know butter makes everything better:) !
Ingredients
1/2 cup melted butter
1/2 cup real mayonnaise
1/2 tsp. lemon juice (or to taste)
1
Melt the butter in the microwave
2
Whisk in the mayonnaise and the lemon juice
Let sit at room temperature until veggies are cooked, then pour sauce directly onto them. The heat from the veggies heats the sauce.
You can substitute the 'light' type of 'I can't believe it's not butter' and Hellman's Light for a lighter hollandaise, but we prefer the real thing!

Vero Beach Museum of Art - 3001 Riverside Park Drive, Vero Beach FL 33163
June 6, 2015 - September 6, 2015 The Museum's summer, 2015, exhibition, James Prosek: Ocean Fishes, will include a large selection of the artist's astounding paintings of salt water fish indigenous to Florida's waters. Prosek is known for his unusually vibrant, life size depictions that capture the beauty and vitality of our "finny friends." He prepared to paint Florida favorites such as the Snook, the Cobia and the Pompano, by making trips to the locations where these fish can be directly observed, including the Treasure Coast. "If I see my reflection in the eyeball of the fish or whatever, I'll paint that in," Prosek explains. "It's me and the fish. I've kind of described [the paintings] as self-portraits in a way." The exhibition of Prosek's paintings will on view from June 6 through September 6, 2015, in the Museum's Schumann and Titelman Galleries. For more information call: phone (772) 231-0707
