editor's note poka-dot

Hello FLASHERS!
If you read my editor's note last week you know that FLASH is doing a 'soft roll-out' on our new app! We love that you LOVE it! Thank you so much for downloading it and sharing it with your friends.  If you haven't downloaded it yet...jump on it and do it!! You too will love it!  We are continuing to add new merchants every day to our coupon side as well as special events for our calendars that are now sub-divided out into 13 special interest calendars making it simple to access specific info. The FLASH app is just packed with useful info! You can check out the feature below for info on how to download it.

The one  thing that I have so thoroughly enjoyed about creating the app is meeting all of my new business friends!  All of the small business owners are incredible people! I have had so much fun ... Yes, literally FUN! ... meeting entrepreneurs like Patrick at the Quilted Giraffe.  He wasn't sold initially on the benefit of utilizing FLASH to promote his restaurant and live music. However, it wasn't too long before he saw the unique benefit of FLASH. I pulled out a contract and began to fill it out.  We had a good laugh when he poked a little fun at my business prowess! Let me take a moment to tell you that I will save a buck when I can. I'm a frugal gal in many respects. My frugality came to the forefront with my Live Music Venue contract. You see there are only a handful of live music venues and I wasn't about to order a minimum order of forms that I would never be able to use. This category required a separate form. So, what did I do? I printed the contract on my office printer and pulled a piece of carbon paper from my art supplies that would assist me in creating a duplicate. I didn't think twice about it because I have used carbon paper for years on different art projects. I quickly discovered that my familiarity with this historic product is not shared. It has received some interesting comments. Patrick's was by far the most entertaining! He cleverly pointed out the fact that he was getting ready to sign on with us because of the fact that we have the ability to introduce his business to a new desirable and tech savvy  audience through our  new app. In his next breath he jumped on the chance to point out the Dichotomy of my carbon paper contract and our 'high tech' app! I have to admit that it cracked me up! I dished it back and told him that I had every intention of using our technology to let our FLASHERS know that the Quilted Giraffe IS NOT a quilt shop as I thought when I first came to Vero. But, that it is an incredible restaurant with delectable cuisine!   We did have fun and I can't wait to spotlight the Quilted Giraffe soon as a 'Live Music Hot Spot of the Week'.

I will leave you with a quote I heard this week from a commentator announcing the passing of Frank Gifford.  It is a quote from the hall of famer himself and one I liked! Just a reminder that the difficult times in life don't stick around forever! If you are a FLASHER going through a hard time...Hang in there! You'll make it! :)

"Gray skies are just clouds passing over."

(Click Here to see the full menu.) Zandra is on-site every night meeting and greeting her guests. She turns patrons into friends and ensures that the service and treatment you receive at Vinz is more of an 'experience' that you can't wait to return and enjoy again and again!

Vinz has live music on Mondays and Fridays and every evening during season.
Vinz patrons enjoy an assortment of  jazz, soul, pop and rock. In cooler months,  music at Vinz is enriched by the atmosphere of the outdoor patio venue that offers dining seating and lounge seating where you can cozy-on-down with a glass of specialty wine, while savoring the mood created by the featured musician. Come enjoy live music this week on Friday and Monday from 6:30 - 9:30. You will enjoy keyboard and vocals by Bobby G. on Monday and acoustic soloist, Lee Roads on Friday.

FALL FASHION TRENDS

September is just a few weeks away and on the fashion calendar, Labor Day marks the beginning of fall.
ELLE MAGAZINE has covered all the runways and put together this slideshow of 20 trends to watch for. You might think that some of them are more appropriate for Halloween and others won't work in our warmer climes,
but there are some we really liked.  One fun look is the car-wash skirts, comprised of ribbons of fabric that resemble those things that slosh across your windshield! There are also a lot of accessories that can spruce up your clothes from last year without spending a fortune.  To view, Click here.

What is diversification as it relates to investing?  It is a way to manage risk by mixing a wide variety of investments within a portfolio. The idea behind this technique is that a portfolio of different kinds of investments will, in theory, yield higher returns and pose a lower risk than any individual investment found within the portfolio.  Typically, a portfolio of about 25-30 stocks give a good amount of diversification.

The Perseid Meteor Shower is known to be one of the brightest and is at its best every
year between July and August! ... Make a wish! :)

WEEKEND PROJECT

Repurpose old water skis and an old ladder into a useful, fun and unique table/buffet. By using the ladder you are half way through your project before you even begin. For the tiered shelf, find and repurpose a couple of pieces of wood that you can cut to the width of the space between the support rungs on the ladder. Then all you have to do is finish off the top with your skis. If you don't like the rustic look, paint your ladder and keep an eagle eye out for some of the old colorful skis!

GARDENING TIP

BEES AND WASPS IN THE YARD?

It's almost impossible to keep bees and wasps out of any yard that has flowering plants and shrubs, but you can control the areas they are in. Bees seem to be more attracted to colorful flowers growing in full sunshine rather than smaller flowers growing in shady spots.  Keep that in mind when you plant near swing sets, outdoor pools and walkways. Ornamental grasses and non-flowering plants are better for those areas.

DID YOU KNOW?
THE BANK LAW GOVERNING CASH WITHDRAWALS
A 1970 anti-money-laundering law known as the Bank Secrecy Act spells out the rules for large cash withdrawals. In general, banks must report any transaction involving at least $10,000 in cash. That includes not only withdrawals but also deposits, currency exchanges (such as swapping dollars for euros or Japanese yen) and the purchase of traveler's checks. The law also requires banks to check identification on any transaction that would trigger a report. In other words, even if your bank doesn't usually ask for ID with withdrawals, it must do so for withdrawals over $10,000..

FLASH TIP OF THE WEEK
WHERE DID THE TIME GO?
Here's a good idea from the book ORGANIZE YOUR OFFICE. At the end of a day, do you frequently wonder where the time went. It might help to keep a daily time log for one week and jot down the time you spent on various tasks, including breaks and phone calls. Chances are there will be a time factor that surprises you! As you evaluate the tasks, ask yourself:
- Did I really need to do this?
- Could I have delayed this in order to work on a task of higher priority?
- Could I have delegated this to someone else?

U.S. News & World Report Names IRMC Among Best in Florida

Indian River Medical Center (IRMC) has been recognized as one of the "Best Hospitals" for 2015-16, ranking No. 12 in Florida and recognized in the South Florida region by U.S. News & World Report. The annual U.S. News Best Hospitals rankings, now in their 26th year, recognize hospitals that excel in treating the most challenging patients.

This comes on the heels of IRMC being recognized in May as high-performing in three specialties, procedures and conditions: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart failure and knee replacement.

INDIAN RIVER MEDICAL CENTER WELCOMES TODD BIBENS
Indian River Medical Center (IRMC) welcomes Todd Bibens, RN, BSN, MSHSA, MBA, as its new Director of Surgical Services. In this role, he will work closely with IRMC's surgical services team to ensure that all patients receive the best possible medical care in the operating room.

"Todd Bibens' strength is in emphasizing quality care and customer service," said Jason Nance, Associate Vice President of Patient Care Services. "He is skilled in looking at processes and then implementing changes to improve patient care whenever needed."

Nancy Gollnick, immediate past president of Florida District Exchange Clubs, captured the two top presidential awards, The Distinguished District President and the Star District President at the recent National Exchange Club Convention in Columbus, Ohio. The Distinguished District President is awarded to a president who exhibits superior leadership development, program excellence, growth, and administration. District presidents must charter three or more clubs in their presidential year; Gollnick chartered six Exchange Clubs during her year as president of the state of Florida's clubs. Prosek is known for his unusually vibrant, life size depictions that capture the beauty and vitality of our "finny friends." He prepared to paint Florida favorites such as the Snook, the Cobia and the Pompano, by making trips to the locations where these fish can be directly observed, including the Treasure Coast. "If I see my reflection in the eyeball of the fish or whatever, I'll paint that in," Prosek explains. "It's me and the fish. I've kind of described [the paintings] as self-portraits in a way." The exhibition of Prosek's paintings will on view from June 6 through September 6, 2015, in the Museum's Schumann and Titelman Galleries. For more information call: phone (772) 231-0707
