HAPPY THURSDAY, FLASHERS!

School starts on Monday! Fall doesn't  officially begin until September 23rd at 4:21 A.M.  when the Sun appears to cross the celestial equator from north to south. Nevertheless, for most of us  the beginning of school means that "Those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer" that the BEACH BOYS sang about are over.  Next week, traffic will become a little heavier as the school buses will be running and many Moms will also be 'dropping off' and 'picking up', so watch for those School Zone speed signs.

Along with school starting, there are other signs that summer is over. Even though we don't turn our clocks back for two more months, you will notice that the sunsets are coming earlier as our days get shorter.  And here in Vero, our 'season' is beginning. It's time to register for classes at our Art Museum  and Riverside Theatre is offering new classes this year as well. Our calendar is going to get busier with all sorts of activities and events. Our new app makes it super easy to be a FLASHER in-the-know! With our 13 sub calendars you are a click away from accessing information that you are specifically interested in without having to wade through seas of info that has no appeal. There are also many savings and specials offered by our local merchants. Wave your FLASH app proudly and save 10% at Waldo's, Pizoodles, and Fishack! Others offer a free glass of wine, discount on services etc.  It is free to download. Just search for Vero Beach FLASH in your app store! When you download it and love it....SHARE IT! We want everyone to be a FLASHER in-the-know and on-the-go! Remember that we always welcome your feedback and suggestions as we continue to tweak and add new information and offers.  ENJOY!

Thank you~

LIVE MUSIC 'HOT SPOT OF THE WEEK'
sponsored by:

Click Here for a listing of this week's live music
------------------------------------------------------

This week our 'Hot Spot' is featuring all live music in our community. We are  incredibly lucky to have so many varied venues to enjoy local talent, socializing, and great food! We have everything from the most casual spots with tropical breezes such as Waldo's to the more stylish and chic venues like Vinz Wining and Dining. You can enjoy outdoor dining and music at The Patio as well and we have spots like 14th Avenue Steakhouse and Kelley's that rival the familiarity of 'CHEERS', where everybody knows your name.  Then we have other locations where your palate will be treated to a tasty meal ... head to Blue Star or Quilted Giraffe! On Fridays you can enjoy a buffet that includes Beer Batter Fish & Chips and live music at the Grille on the Green. Change it up from week to week and try them all! The entrepreneurs behind these 'small/local businesses' invest quite a lot each week to bring us all the joy of live music. It is important that we patronize each one in order to keep such a treat a reality.

When I first met with Tricia, the energized individual behind Vero Beach Live that FLASH has now partnered with, I found something she said very enlightening. It's something that we all know...common sense really, but also something that we might not register all the time.  She was talking about people who grumble about the cost of a glass of wine or who go and take up a seat at the bar and order water. She was quick to point out everything you get with that glass of wine...lights, air condition, servers, entertainment, and an opportunity to socialize! Not too shabby for the cost of a glass of wine and vastly different from the experience you'd get if you purchased a bottle and went home alone to pour a glass and toast yourself! Another little bit of common sense...if you like having live music as an entertainment option...then we need to patronize our 'hot spots'! Swap your glass of water for a libation of choice and toast to the wonderful local talent we have.  Lastly, we will be forming a FLASH group of those interested in meeting on a rotation basis at different live music spots around town.  If you want to make new friends in a fun-casual setting...Click here and FLASH will be back in touch soon with information on our first gathering! Fun times are just around the corner at our music 'hot spots'!

How often do I need to trade my portfolio? Trades often trigger transaction expenses and capital gains taxes (if not in a retirement account), each of which lower returns.  Even more importantly, trades may lower returns simply by being wrong.  (For example: when trades are motivated by fear, greed, anxiety, remorse and/or an irrational belief that market timing works.)  You may wish to consider a managed account that is charged by a quarterly fee rather than commissions for each transaction.

FLASH TIP OF THE WEEK

HOME IMPROVEMENTS YOU MAY WANT TO SKIP

If you're thinking of doing some remodeling and know that sometime in the future you will be selling your home, here are some important money saving tips you may want to consider. To view the slideshow,

THE OUTRAGEOUS OUTFITS AT THE MET GALA

The Met Gala is an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York City.  The Met gala is an artistic venture, unlike your typical 'red carpet' events. The outfits are supposed to push the envelope and this year's event certainly did! Some of the celebrities featured in this 100+ slide show from Harper's Bazaar bared a lot of body parts. Perhaps it should be titled WHAT THEY DIDN'T WEAR!

She's a different kind of FLASHER! :)

UNDERSTANDING REVERSE MORTGAGES

No doubt you have seen at least one of the frequent commercials touting Reverse Mortgages. They are usually presented by one of your favorite celebrities like Henry Winkler, - the Fonz from Happy Days. Fonzie wouldn't lie to us, would he?

Probably not, but he may not tell you the entire story. For example, you don't pay monthly interest, but interest is charged and compounded, (i.e. 'interest charged on interest' like on credit cards) and is added to the original loan when it comes due. And the interest rate is usually higher than that of traditional mortgages. To read the full story, Click here.

DID YOU KNOW?
(Make sure your kids know this one!)
According to a government study, a diploma has an economic value! High school graduates earn 38 percent more than those without a diploma, and college graduates earn 140 percent more! By graduating from high school, your child can earn more than a million dollars in his lifetime. That can lead to even greater success if they attend college.

  WEEKEND PROJECT
Create An Organization Station!

This week's post offers some great suggestions for anyone and everyone!... Certainly a few great way to get organized for the start of the school year. But don't be fooled! Though it says 'back to school', there are ideas that can help organize any life. Give it a peak and see if there is a suggestion that could help add a little peace of mind that comes from a little organization.

TIPS FOR PACKING A SCHOOL LUNCH
Many children, especially the younger ones, prefer to take their lunch to school, so here are some ideas that might help:
  • Use hamburger buns rather than bread. The preparation process seems to be faster and they're easier to hold for tiny hands.
  • Let the child help make lunch. Studies show that if a child is involved with the preparation, he is more likely to like the outcome.
  • Peanut butter and jelly is a classic, but due to peanut allergies, some schools restrict them. Check with your classroom teacher.
  • Instead of peanut butter, use cream cheese with jelly or jam, or try the strawberry or pineapple flavored cream cheese. You can also add fresh or canned fruit to the plain or flavored cheese. A slice of canned pineapple fits perfectly on a bun!
  • Veggies are good too, depending on your child's taste. Try a slice of tomato with mayo, a few cucumber slices, or sliced green or black olives with the cream cheese.
  • Look to our Recipe of the Week for some fancier ideas. ;)

  TODAY'S CHUCKLE
This one is a little long, but especially appropriate right now!
When the politician arrived in heaven,  St. Peter said that there were special rules for folks like him. He would first have to spend one day in hell, then spend one day in heaven, then he would choose in which place he would rather spend eternity. He was then put in the special elevator and sent down to hell. When he stepped out, he was amazed. There was a beautiful golf course and in the clubhouse he saw several of his old friends drinking champagne and dining on lobster. Even the devil seemed to be a jolly and friendly fellow. After his stay, he was sent up to heaven. It was peaceful and the music was beautiful,  but he didn't see any old friends while he was there.  After his stay, he again met St. Peter who asked what he had chosen. "I never thought I would say this, but I would prefer hell," he replied, so St. Peter sent him back down in the elevator.

When he arrived, he was again greeted by the devil, but when he looked around there was no golf course and his friends, dressed in rags, were roaming the streets, picking up trash and begging for money. "I don't understand," he stammered, "Yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and clubhouse, and we ate lobster and drank champagne. Now there's just a wasteland full of garbage and my friends look miserable. What happened?'

The devil looked at him, smiled and said, "Yesterday we were campaigning..... Today you voted."

Prosek is known for his unusually vibrant, life size depictions that capture the beauty and vitality of our "finny friends." He prepared to paint Florida favorites such as the Snook, the Cobia and the Pompano, by making trips to the locations where these fish can be directly observed, including the Treasure Coast. "If I see my reflection in the eyeball of the fish or whatever, I'll paint that in," Prosek explains. "It's me and the fish. I've kind of described [the paintings] as self-portraits in a way." The exhibition of Prosek's paintings will on view from June 6 through September 6, 2015, in the Museum's Schumann and Titelman Galleries. For more information call: phone (772) 231-0707
