Happy Thursday, Flashers!
This past week things seemed to quiet down just a bit. Not quite sure why. Wish I could say it was because of all of the prior proper planning. But, truth be told, it seems that no matter how hard I try... pulling ahead just doesn't seem to be in the cards for me. I did sneak away from the norm though and it was a gift that was the impetus.
My husband's friend gave me a full bag of fresh key limes from a tree my husband planted in his yard several years ago. Fresh key limes can only equate to one thing... Key Lime Pies! It would be criminal not to perform this magical transformation. So, I set to work and enjoyed time in my kitchen. Adding to a perfect afternoon was the fact that I did steal a lick from the spoon dripping with sweetened condensed milk. Why is it that taste so good? I didn't dip back ... not to worry! I turned the 'radio' (yes ... radio) to my favorite station and sang and baked for well over an hour! A perfect afternoon away from the computer for a change! I squeezed 2 cups of juice and made four pies. The recipients? I have a new neighbor I had not 'officially met', a friend burdened with some medical issues and inundated with doctor appointments, a friend who loves my key lime pie and one of my son's best friends who lives in Fort Pierce.
I had the jolliest feeling when I showed up at their door. I am certain it rivaled that of good 'Old St. Nick' on Christmas Eve. As my mother ALWAYS says...true happiness comes from doing for others. Not that this was a big deal, it certainly wasn't. But, that's the important factor here. It is even in the smallest act of kindness that we can personally gain a sense of happiness and who knows the impact on the recipient. I urge each FLASHER to find their 'key lime pie fix' at some point this month. Whatever it might be. Take an hour or two and do something special that you know will bring a smile to someone. The by-product? I guarantee you will be smiling too! ...And you might win! Send an email and tell me what 'your fix' is. I'd love to hear how you made someone's day! Team FLASH will bestow a $50 gift card from Center For Facial Aesthetics to a lucky FLASHER
with a big heart! Click Here to email us and have a fabulous time bringing smiles to others!
Thank you~

THE TRUTH ABOUT LIGHTNING
How about these lightning storms we've been having? By now, I'm sure you have heard of the many football games that had to be halted over the weekend. My sister and niece were at the University of Miami game when the stands were evacuated, and Mom and I were caught in a storm while driving around town last week. It can be kinda scary when you get caught in one of these storms that catch us off guard. There are so many myths about lightning, Team FLASH went to the government weather service to get the facts, and we learned a lot. Did you know an umbrella can increase your chances of being struck by lightning if it makes you the tallest object in the area? If you're away from home, the best way to stay safe during a lightning storm is to head for a metal-topped vehicle. It is a widespread myth that the reason vehicles provide protection from lightning is due to the tires. In actuality, lightning flows around the outside of a car, and the majority of the current flows from the car's metal cage into the ground below. However, it is important to fold your hands in your lap and avoid touching anything metal within the car. You also should not to touch the radio or talk on the cell phone, especially if it is connected to your vehicle. If you are driving, pull to the side of the road, turn on your hazard lights, turn off the engine and wait out the storm. To separate other myths from the facts, Click here.

TODAY'S CHUCKLE
...FLATTERY WILL GET YOU NOWHERE!
Luke's wife bought a new line of expensive cosmetics guaranteed to make her look years younger. After a lengthy sitting before the mirror applying the "miracle" products she asked, "Darling, honestly what age would you say I am?" Looking over her carefully, Luke replied, "Judging from your skin, twenty; your hair, eighteen; and your figure, twenty-five." "Oh, you flatterer!" she gushed. "Hey, wait a minute!" Luke interrupted. "I haven't added them up yet."

This week we want to introduce you to The Patio Seafood Tavern and proprietor, Bill Brown. Bill cleaned up and revived The Patio nine months ago, bringing one of the most beloved and iconic venues of Vero Beach back to us. He dishes up fresh seafood with the best ingredients, resulting in spectacular flavor. If you have never walked through the doors and absorbed the ambiance that is generated by the unique decor of rustic driftwood and iron....you simply must! Head over for Main Lobster night on Tuesdays! Yum!
You have your choice of enjoying a cocktail at the outdoor bar as well as dining alfresco. Or move inside and take a tour of the interior dining areas before settling in. There are secluded/casual booths to the side, a large open dining area where you can enjoy the live music as well as your table conversation, an indoor bar area in the back and finally two separate rooms for private functions.
Every other Wednesday, you will be entertained on the outdoor patio by vocalist Sybil Gage and her inimitable New Orleans style. It is a show not to be missed! On alternating Wednesdays you will hear guitarist/vocalist MJ Wicker who will entertain you with a grand variety of Americana and all-time favorites. Other live music nights include Mondays with Kent Taylor Brown starting Sept. 21st and Fridays you will enjoy local talent such as: Ladies of Soul, Wiley Nash, and East Harbor band.
Bottom line...Get to The Patio Seafood Tavern for not only some great seafood, but some pretty darn tasty burgers and steaks too! (see menu) You will definitely enjoy some of Vero's best entertainment!

What is a 529? (Hint: It is not a type of blue jeans!).
A 529 Savings Plan is designed to put aside money for a person's higher education. If the money is used for tuition, books, fees, equipment and/or room and board, then the funds are not subject to taxation when withdrawn. .
There are also estate planning advantages for donors that would like to remove assets from their estate while retaining some measure of control of the money. Contact me for a complimentary lesson to learn more about this.

As with other investments, there are generally fees and expenses associated with participation in the 529 plan. There is also risk that these plans may lose money or not perform well enough to cover costs as anticipated. Most states offer their own 529 programs, which may provide advantages and benefits exclusively for their residents. The tax implications can vary significantly from state to state. DID YOU KNOW? The History of Donuts (and Coffee Shops) Fried doughnuts have been around a long time. It's believed that the Dutch who settled New Amsterdam (now New York) first introduced us to 'olykoeks' - which translated as 'oily cakes.' They were made in various shapes. but round ones frequently were not fully cooked in the middle, so cooks began cutting a hole in them by hand. In 1920, Adolph Levitt, an enterprising immigrant from Russia began selling fried doughnuts from his bakery in New York City. Hungry theater crowds pushed him to make a gadget that churned out the tasty rings faster, and he did. In 1931 he opened the first Mayflower doughnut shop at Broadway and West 45th Street. The shop served Maxwell House coffee and featured a working doughnut machine in the window. Until the 1970's there were several Mayflower shops around the country, - the Granddaddy to the Dunkin' Donuts, Krispy Kremes and Starbucks of today.
|
|
THE OPTIMIST'S CREED
"As you ramble through Life, Brother,
Whatever be your goal.
Keep your eye upon the doughnut,
And not upon the hole."
This anonymous quote was adopted by Adolph Levitt as his motto (see above post). It hung as a sign in each of his Mayflower shops and was printed on every box of donuts he sold. I love his advice and it is excellent advice for each of us!

FLASH TIP OF THE WEEK A PRODUCT WE LIKE - FLEX SEAL Have you tried the magic can of FLEX SEAL? It truly is amazing. Perhaps you have seen the commercial where a man seals the screen bottom in his boat. It really works, people! My son sealed a leak around the chimney at a friend's house and we have used it for leaks at the family beach house. It's like rubber in a spray can and comes in different colors. You can find it at drugstores in the "as seen on TV" shelf and at local home supply stores. NOTE: FLASH doesn't receive any compensation for these endorsements. RECIPE OF THE WEEK
EGG SALAD "SALAD"
Yes, you read that correctly. It's an iceberg lettuce salad that uses your usual chopped egg salad as a dressing. This was a favorite side salad of my grandmother's, but it's good enough for a luncheon main dish, and it's loaded with protein!
Ingredients 6 hard boiled eggs, peeled, rinsed, and dried 1/3 cup (heaping) celery, cut into a small pieces 1/4 cup green or white onion, chopped 1/4 cup (or more) mayonnaise Pinch of salt Black pepper
1 head Iceberg Lettuce - chopped in small pieces
Optional garnishes or additions - see below
Directions
- Prep hard-boiled eggs. Slice the eggs into quarters, chop them into pieces, and place in a large bowl. Eggs can be mashed with a potato masher or fork.
- Combine and mix ingredients. Add celery, onion, mayo, a pinch of salt and several grinds of pepper. Mix lightly until the mixture comes together.
- Taste and adjust seasonings. Taste the egg salad and add more salt and pepper, onion, or mayonnaise if needed. (Mixture should be thick, but if it seems too thick, thin with just a little buttermilk or other milk you have on hand.)
- When ready to serve, toss in chopped Iceberg Lettuce and or spinach.
- Optional garnishes or additions = curry powder, chopped celery, tomato or radishes, red onion, ham or bacon bits, pickle relish, sunflower seeds, sliced almonds or other nuts, avocado, thawed frozen peas, chopped olives, capers, crumbled blue cheese, minced jalapeno or whatever else appeals to you!
