editor's note poka-dot

Hello FLASHERS~
This week my 'Editor's Note' is going to be a little bit different. It won't have that 'cherry' sentiment, but rather a call to action. I ask you each to watch a video that Officer Marquez recorded a few weeks ago after Deputy Darren Goforth was ambushed at a gas station in Texas. Deputy Goforth was shot 15 times simply because he 'wore the uniform.' Officer Lydia Marquez is a friend of a friend of mine in Miami. Her video has inspired me to initiate the process of trying to organize a first responder appreciation day here in Vero. This past year we have continued to see and hear stories that I hope have made our skin crawl. The senseless killings of our officers is something that should have us all up in arms. Hearing chants calling for 'pigs to fry' in my mind is unthinkable! I try to never get political in FLASH and to always stay upbeat! My apologies if you see me straying from that just a bit this week. Standing for those who are our first responders is something I have no problem doing! These are the exact individuals that are there in our hour of need. If you are interested in helping FLASH plan a day to recognize both our officers and fire fighters... Please send me an email. I welcome your input and am grateful for as much or as little help as you are able to give.

My hope is that we can stand together as a community in solid unity and appreciation for those who defend us everyday ... right here in our own backyards! Please take a moment and watch this video. Lydia shines light on some issues you may not have thought of. Jump on board and get involved. Together I have absolutely no doubt that we will have our first responders 'feeling' the love, respect, and deep appreciation they work hard to earn and so very much deserve! Let's get to work, FLASHERS!

Thank you~

Flu season is fast approaching, and VNA Home Health and Hospice is preparing for its 23rd season of its "Shoo the Flu" vaccination program.

The VNA will offer two types of flu vaccinations:  a preservative-free high-dose vaccine and a preservative-free quadrivalent vaccine. The high-dose vaccine is only for those individuals who are 65 years or older and contain four times the amount the antigens. The quadrivalent vaccine is for individuals 10 years or older and offers broader coverage than the regular flu shot. The pneumonia shot will also be offered at each VNA clinic. All VNA flu vaccines are manufactured in the United States.

Twig Votives

With Fall in the air, now is the perfect time to bring a bit of the outdoors inside. These twig votives are easy and fun to make. Think ahead and think of how great these would be on your Thanksgiving table. The size of your container will dictate the size and thickness of your twigs. You can give it a twist and paint the twigs if you'd like. Gold and silver would create a more elegant table... fall colors of oranges, yellow and burnt umber would exude a more casual setting. DID YOU KNOW?
THE FEDERAL RESERVE IS NOT A GOVERNMENT AGENCY
The Federal Reserve is a privately owned banking cartel. It is not a government agency. As the nation's central bank, the Federal Reserve does derive its authority from the Congress of the United States and the President does appoint the Chairman and its Board. However, it is considered independent because its monetary policy decisions, (like setting interest rates)  do not have to be approved by the President or anyone else in the executive or legislative branches of government. The word is... We are going to start to see the interest rates creep up! The Federal Open Market Committee's (FOMC) upcoming policy decision today (Thursday) is definitely the most hotly anticipated market event of the year. The expected rate hike would be the central bank's first in nearly a decade.

Taxes should factor into your retirement plan.  Some retirement savings vehicles have you pay taxes on contributions but are typically tax free upon a qualifying withdrawal.  Some allow tax free contributions, but charge tax when you withdraw funds.  You should diversify your investments and keep in mind how you will spread out your tax burden upon retirement..

  TODAY'S CHUCKLE

A  pompous government employee stopped at a farm and spoke with the old farmer. He told the farmer, "I need to inspect your farm for possible violations."

The old farmer gestured and said, "OK, but don't go in that field over there."

The man said, "Listen here! I have the authority of the State Government to go where I want. See this card? I am allowed to go wherever I wish on farm land."

So the old farmer went about his farm chores. Later, he heard loud screams and saw the man running for the fence and close behind was the farmer's prize bull. The bull was mad and was gaining on the employee at every step!!

The old farmer called out, "Show him your card!!"

5 SUBJECTS NO LONGER TAUGHT IN MOST SCHOOLS
(and the reasons for the change!)

Cursive Writing - obsolete since students can print and use a computer
(But how will they sign a check?)
Typing - because even young children are self-taught on computers
(The 'Hunt and peck' system seems to work for most kids.)
Library Dewey Decimal System - Computers have made card catalogs are not necessary and 'category signs' (MYSTERIES, SPORTS, etc.) like bookstores have made reading more "appealing."
(I think this one makes sense!
Home Economics - not enough time in the school day and should be taught at home. (But will they be taught at home?)
Dodge Ball in Phys. Ed. - "too dangerous"
(What??? - More than football or being hit by a baseball??)
No More Chalkboards or 'Clapping Erasers'Though not a subject...just another fun fact. SMART Boards and Dry Erase boards are probably a welcome replacement.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Homemade Dump Cake with Peaches, Blueberries, and Pecans

The Dump Cake was probably first created by a lazy cook because it's so easy to make this dessert that is really more like a cobbler. However, this special version comes from the gourmet magazine EPICURIOUS.

Yield: 9-12 servings

Ingredients

  •         3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, cubed, plus more for pan
  • All-purpose flour (for pan)
  • 1 pound sliced frozen peaches (about 4 cups)
  • 1 pint fresh blueberries (about 2 cups)
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 160z. box store bought yellow cake mix
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup pecans, chopped
  •
  • Preparation
Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter and flour a 13x9" baking dish. Arrange peaches and blueberries in a single layer in prepared dish. Top evenly with sugar and add vanilla. Shake pan gently to cover fruit with sugar. Sprinkle cake mix and cinnamon over fruit and shake gently again to combine. Dot evenly with 3/4 cup cubed butter and top with pecans. Bake cake until surface springs back to the touch and cake is set and golden brown, 40-45 minutes. Serve warm or at room temperature.

    Do Ahead
Cake can be made 3 days ahead; wrap in plastic and chill
