Don't we all love the month of October when the temperatures really do get a little cooler. I even remember one Halloween as a child in Miami when we had to wear coats over our costumes because it was so chilly. I know Mom was thrilled to have myself and four sisters 'cover up' her clever costume creations! :( I'm looking forward to those cooler nights. And all of our favorite TV shows are back for another season. For football lovers, it seems there is some game going on somewhere almost every night. We can all pretend to be German at the many Oktoberfest celebrations this month and the stores are already stocking Halloween decorations and candy. (Memo to self: Do not buy Halloween candy yet!) And here in Vero, we recognize the official beginning of 'our season'. Our 'snowbird ' friends are returning and our Community Calendar really gets busy! Riverside Theatre begins it's professional plays later this month and tickets are going fast! Don't miss out! If you have never been to a production at our local theatre ... all you have to do is go once and you will be hooked! You can head to the Theatre this weekend for some laughs as Comedy Zone nights are this Friday and Saturday. We have such an incredible gem in our own backyard...get out and enjoy it, FLASHERS! Two New exhibits arrived at the Museum of Art last month and another one will be on display starting on the 17th. Just 'another' Vero Gem!! It is Free Admission Saturday at the Environmental Leaning Center. Get the kids in the car and enjoy a day outdoors. Find out more about your family heritage and head to the Family History Expo this weekend. (see post below) Our local Indian River Genealogical Society is amazing and they have created an incredible resource at the Main Library. Are you feeling the stress of the pace picking up? Head to the Sebastian Library on Saturday from 12:00 - 1:00 and learn how to destress your day! (See details on the calendar below) So much to see and do!
I have two more plugs. One, more of an invite than plug. I am still receiving emails from FLASHERS wanting to join our inaugural group to plan a day to honor our first responders. I will be back in town this weekend and will be sending an email to those who have expressed an interest with information on our initial brainstorming session. There is still time to get in on the 'ground floor'. Just send me an email. Secondly, I want all of Vero to download our wonderful app. We have new businesses joining everyday offering you a discount on their services. Then of course the other incredible benefit is that our event calendar is categorized into 13 sub calendars making it super convenient to go directly to information that interest you. Just go to your app store and search for Vero Beach FLASH. If you need more detailed directions on how to download. Email me! We have all been there!... For sure!! :)
If your company has a matching 401k contribution, be sure to contribute at least enough to receive the match. Otherwise you are essentially leaving money on the table.

WOULD YOUR CHILD BENEFIT FROM AN EVALUATION?
Now that school has been back in session for a few weeks, the newness has worn off and you may have found that the adjustment in your family was quite uneventful and simple. But for others, the new school year may present some challenges. This was the case for one of my children. I finally had her 'tested' when she was in sixth grade. Looking back I wish I had done it sooner and I guess that falls to 'better late than never'. If your child struggles in the classroom, seems frustrated, is easily distracted or studies hard and the info just doesn't seem to stick... it may be time to find out why. There is much research behind the finding that the sooner appropriate instruction and interventions are put in place, the greater the long term educational success a child can have. You will be amazed at the increase in self-esteem that can take place. I was so happily surprised! Having a thorough understanding of how your child learns will help you be an effective advocate for your child. There truly is a great deal available once you know what you are dealing with. How can you support your child? Talk to your child's teacher to find out what's being observed in the classroom. For additional clarification, talk to a professional who specializes in how students learn; psychoeducational evaluations can help you understand your child's difficulties, as well as his or her strengths. "When parents and teachers share a common understanding and work together to support a student, progress can be enhanced." Karen Mersky can help you through this difficult process. She is a licensed psychologist and you can reach her by calling (772) 453-2747. Such an evaluation certainly helped us identify ways to help our child and learning became easier and the time spent studying paid of. Today she is my avid reader!

The first Oktoberfest was actually a wedding reception held in 1810 honoring the marriage of Bavarian King Ludwig I and Maria Theresia of Saxonia. The royal shindig took place at the Theresienwiese (Theresia meadow) where it continues to be held today. Celebrations continued annually and in 1819 there was an official edict that the party return each fall. Since then, the festivities have been cancelled only two dozen times-once in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian war, twice due to cholera epidemics, and later in the hyperinflation of the 1920s and in the years during and after the two World Wars.

TODAY'S CHUCKLE
An atheist was spending a quiet day fishing when suddenly his boat was attacked by the Loch Ness monster. In one easy flip, the beast tossed him and his boat at least a hundred feet into the air. It then opened its mouth waiting below to swallow him. As the man fell head over heels towards the open jaws of the ferocious beast he cried out, "Oh, my God! Help me!"
Suddenly, the scene froze in place and as the atheist hung in midair. A booming voice came out of the clouds and said, "I thought you didn't believe in Me!"
"God, come on, give me a break!" the man pleaded, "Just seconds ago I didn't believe in the Loch Ness monster either!"

FLASH TIP OF THE WEEK
VITAMINS FOR MEMORY
You have probably heard that Vitamin B-12 is important for memory, but according to Bottom Line Health other B vitamins can help too. B-1 (thiamine) helps the body burn carbohydrates, the primary source for brain cells. B-3 (niacin) appears to boost short term memory and comprehension and B-6 helps the formation of the brain's neurotransmitters. It's important, however, to follow the dosage instructions on the B-complex or individual vitamin bottles. Overdosing can be dangerous. More than 2 grams a day of niacin can cause peptic ulcers and aggravate cardiac problems and more than 200 mg a day can be toxic to nerve cells and interfere with drugs prescribed for Parkinson's disease. Of course it is always a good idea to check with your doctor before adding something different to medicinal mix.
FLASH VIDEO OF THE WEEK
THE WORLD SERIES AFTER 9/11
Most people were not aware that one of the President's secret service detail was dressed as an umpire the night President Bush threw out the pitch during the 2001 World Series at Yankee Stadium. This was in October, just a few weeks after 9/11 and our country's patriotism was at a high! It shows our country united and proud to be Americans! What an awesome feeling! It will never cease to amaze me how quite often the most earth shaking feelings of faith, commitment, belonging, love, devotion, patriotism, a united community etc... comes at such incredible cost that are equally earth shaking and rattles us to the core. This video conjured up those emotions after 9-11. Click Here
