TODAY IN HISTORY
Today is the 144th anniversary of The Great Fire of Chicago in 1871.  Over 300 people were killed and 90,000 were left homeless as the fire leveled 3.5 square miles, destroying 17,450 buildings. Financial losses totaled over $200 million.  (That's a lot of money today, but can you imagine its value back then!) There is a legend that it started when Mrs. Patrick O'Leary's cow kicked over a lantern in her barn on DeKoven Street. According to the Smithsonian Institute, this is a myth. The fire did start in the vicinity of the O'leary's home. No one knows how the fire started, but it is believed that is probably started from a spark that was carried by the 30 mile an hour wind that night. A reporter named Michael Ahern thought it would make a more colorful story in the newspaper to blame it on the cow. It was over twenty years  later before he admitted that he had made the whole thing up. Unfortunately, it ruined Mrs. O'Leary's reputation because people blamed her for the devastation and she was even accused of starting the fire deliberately. Nevertheless, a folk song was written about the incident and in 1999 Chicago had 100 artists paint life sized cows that were displayed around the city  much like the elaborate turtles that decorate our own city.

....Get ready for the transition......  :)

I love the fact that the sea turtle is our unofficial symbol. Over the years I have seen many of them nest on the beach at our family's beach house that was built in 1974 near Wabasso.  Since the 70's we have seen the beach erode and a sea wall installed. Still the turtles return to our beach to lay their eggs. This year sand was even trucked in, but unfortunately it did not last a month. :(  Bottom line, it is hard to stop 'Mother Nature'.) I did have a chance to visit with the 'experts' from Sebastian Intlet State Park yesterday. The good news is that the turtle numbers are on the rise! Most of the nests have hatched, but there are still some Green Turtle nest that will be hatching soon. The end of October marks the end of this year's turtle season. We will miss are archaic friends and will welcome their return in the spring!

I hope all of our FLASHERS enjoy the long Columbus Day weekend! It is a federal holiday so remember banks, post offices and other government buildings will be closed on Monday. Enjoy your long weekend, Flashers!

Thank you~

Free Film Week at Riverside Theatre is an introduction to Johnny Burke, the lyricist that is the basis for the opening show of the season, "Swinging on a Star". Johnny Burke was a prolific writer of popular songs from the 1920's through the 1950's with many of his tunes becoming instant classics. Working with such famous artists as Irving Berlin, Guy Lombardo, Fats Waller, Ozzie Nelson, and Nat King Cole, Mr. Burke is probably better known for the songs written for the films of Bing Crosby.

 SNEAKY ASTHMA ALLERGY TRIGGERS

You probably know the more common allergy triggers like pollen and ragweed, but there are some not-so-common ones that you should watch for. My sister had a reaction to paint fumes a while back, and sure enough that is one mentioned in this slideshow from WebMD along with what you can do about it. To view all of these sneaky triggers, Click here.

  TODAY'S CHUCKLE

A young man was invited to the home of his elderly neighbors for dinner. He noticed that the host preceded every comment to his wife with endearing terms, calling her Honey, My Love, Darling, Sweetheart, Pumpkin, etc.

The young fellow  smiled and said, "That's wonderful that after all these years that you've been married, you still call your wife by those pet names."

The old gentlemen hung his head and whispered, "To tell the truth, I forgot her name three years ago."

  RECIPE OF THE WEEK
Caramel Apple Pops

Fall is apple season and apples and fall means caramel apples. The problem is, Caramel Apples are nearly impossible to eat. Not so with Caramel Apple Slices!
.

Ingredients
  1. Apples
  2. White or Wooden Popsicle Sticks
  3. Melting Chocolate (*1)
  4. Caramel
  5. Toppings - optional
Instructions
  1. First wash & slice your apples, remove the seeds, insert the stick at the bottom, & pat the apple slices dry.
  2. Cover each apple slice in melted chocolate & place on a piece of wax paper to dry. Continue this process until all of your apples are covered in chocolate & have hardened.
  3. Then drizzle the caramel & other toppings on top of your apple slices.
  4. Let harden & enjoy!
Tips

1. Cut thick apple slices so the stick stays secure. Approximately 1/2 - 3/4 inch thick works great.
2. Make sure to pat down the apples to soak up any extra apple juice.
3. Allow some of the chocolate to drip onto the stick, this will act as a sort of edible glue that holds the stick & apple together.
4. Use slightly cooled caramel so the chocolate doesn't melt off.
5. I also recommend that you make them & eat them in the same day. The longer they sit the greater chance for a weeping caramel apple slice, which will cause the yummy coating to break or slide off in some areas.
