HAPPY THURSDAY, FLASHERS!
The average U.S. life expectancy was 47 years in 1900. In 2015, the average is 79. With all of us living longer, you may have heard that  the 50s are the new 30s, the 60s the new 40s, etc. It certainly seems to be true for two of my favorite actresses who have birthdays in October.  Julie Andrews turned 80 this month and Angela Lansbury will be 90 tomorrow!  These two fabulous women are role models for the rest of us gals. It's hard to believe that it's been  over 50 years since Julie Andrews was Mary Poppins (1964) and Maria von Trapp in Sound of Music (1965). Julie stopped singing when an operation damaged her vocal chords but she continues to appear in films and on television  and Angela returned to Broadway earlier this year in Blithe Spirit. I know I don't feel as old as I am and when I see my children, I don't understand how they got so old so fast when I didn't. I firmly believe the quote that "Growing old is mandatory, but growing up is optional."

I encourage ALL FLASHERS to stay young at heart!  That is really not so difficult! Staying 'young' basically equates to being happy and I believe that no matter what your age the following tips will bring about just that ... A happy multi-generational group of happy people! So, here it goes... give it a try.
1) Be and Stay curious... Develop an 'I want to know' trait. Curious people are open to new experiences and people evolve and grow based on their experiences. According to Psychology Today, curiosity and conscientiousness trumped intelligence when it came to predicting a person's success.
2) Help Others - Volunteer - That is easy to do in our community.  There are so many non profits that are always looking for volunteers and it is no secret that we are the true beneficiary when we give our time to help others. My 82 year old mother signed up several months ago with Youth Guidance and meets with a group of children every other Monday. She loves her kids and they love her! ...If you have never volunteered...Give it a try!
3) Learn new things - With technology constantly throwing us curve balls, we can easily be left behind. How does the TV remote work? DON'T be left behind!  Stay curious (go back to #1) Technology is just one area where we can continue to learn. You could also sign up for an art class, join a book club, take a course at IRSC, attend some of the local workshops, sign up for dance lessons, etc. We just ran a FLASH exclusive yesterday with the iPhone and iPad classes offered by Refresh Fotos. Check out these programs and call to register.
4) Play! Find a new hobby. I discovered kayaking two years ago and I love it.  Take up golf, tennis, yoga, shuffleboard, bridge, gardening....  Whatever you choose, I hope it will refresh you! Check out the Library programs. They offer a wide variety of programs. Why not head to the Pumpkin Patch at Christ By The Sea Methodist Church and buy a pumpkin and carve it!!! You could plan a halloween party and have a pumpkin carving contest. I did this years ago and it was a blast! HAVE FUN!
5) LAUGH!  You could head to the Comedy Zone this weekend to get in a few laughs or head to Sebastian Library every second Friday of the month for the "Enjoy Life - Choose Laughter" program presented by Nancy Johnson. Rent one of your favorite comedies and invite a couple of friends over for popcorn and laughs!

You will see in this issue that our calendar is beginning to fill up!  Check out the calendar and the live music venues and then get out and enjoy life FLASHERS!
Thank you~

Flu season is fast approaching, and
VNA Home Health and Hospice is preparing for its 23rd season of its "Shoo the Flu" vaccination program.

The VNA will offer two types of flu vaccinations:  a preservative-free high-dose vaccine and a preservative-free quadrivalent vaccine. The high-dose vaccine is only for those individuals who are 65 years or older and contain four times the amount the antigens. The quadrivalent vaccine is for individuals 10 years or older and offers broader coverage than the regular flu shot. The pneumonia shot will also be offered at each VNA clinic. All VNA flu vaccines are manufactured in the United States.

 ORIONIDS METEOR SHOWER
Wednesday, October 21st

To best view a meteor shower, get away from the glow of city lights. After you've escaped the city glow, find a dark, secluded spot where oncoming car headlights will not frustrate you. Look for a state or city park or a beach to the north or south away from the lights of the city. Once you have settled at your observing spot, lie back or position yourself so the horizon appears at the edge of your peripheral vision, with the stars and sky filling your field of view. Meteors will instantly grab your attention as they streak by. Spread a blanket and even take a pillow to thoroughly enjoy your own personal showing of the Orionids Meteor Shower!

COMEDIAN JODY KERNS is a southern belle that kicks like a mule!  Coming to the stage looking like a soccer mom and then blowing you away with her take on kids, drugs, sex, marriage...you name it, she talks about it.  She ain't shy about nothing!  And she has no fear, because she has raised five kids!  She's seen it all and done it all when it comes to living life, and she'll be more than happy to tell you about it. When she breaks out her guitar, everyone becomes a part of the show and they keep begging for more.  She has appeared on TV screens in: "The View," Chelsey Handler's "Girls Behaving Badly," "A Woman Named Jackie," "The Montel Williams Show," and on film in: Billy Tate and Irwin Texas. When she's done her routine, your cheeks and sides will hurt.

COMEDIAN JAMES YON This Florida native is one of America's hottest up and coming comedians. Born half black, half Asian growing up in the south, his comedy styling has evolved into a mixture of hilarious stand-up, musical impressions, and some of the most outrageous dance moves you've ever seen. His show is one you can't miss and will never forget. James was the house MC for a comedy club in Universal Studios Orlando for five years. He has graced the stage with some of America's top talent including, Joe Torry, Jimmy J.J Walker, Tom Rhodes, and Michael Winslow.  He was a finalist for NBC's "Stand up for Diversity" and appeared on the FOX "Comedy Club."  He was the 2011 winner of the Orlando Improv's"Clash of the Comics." Now James spends his time touring clubs and casinos all over the country from Orlando to Las Vegas bringing the funny.

FUN WITH LEAVES
Here's a little craft that will have you enjoying 'falling leaves' with the kids. Okay...you can pick them. That's what we do in the tropics! You can pretend we have FALL in Vero! :) Find leaves of various shapes and sizes and then glue them to a piece of paper. If it turns out wonderful you can even pick up an inexpensive frame at the dollar store or check out your favorite second hand shop. You can usually pick one up for pennies on the dollar there.  If you find a wooden frame, you can paint the frame too!  You can even preserve your creation by placing your creation between two pieces of wax paper. Place a towel on top and run a warm iron over it. This will melt the wax on the paper and seal your masterpiece. I did this with my kids at the cabin in Georgia years ago and our fun fall art stayed taped to the window for several years! Fun memories! :)

Have you always wondered how Netflix, Amazon or Hulu work? Don't even know what those things are?  Take a moment and watch this video.  It lays it out for you and compares the three. Amazon for instance offers books where Netflix does not.

DID YOU KNOW?
The Steven Spielberg film Back To The Future II, which was made in 1989, predicted that the Chicago Cubs would win the  World Series in 2015? Their opponent was predicted to be 'the Miami team' (which didn't exist at that time).  Miami later did form their Marlins team, but unfortunately they are not in the competition for the pennant this year. However, the prediction just might come true for the Cubs and it would be their first win since 2008! To watch the film clip, Click here.

Debt is a four letter dirty word!
Not everyone can write a check and pay off your home mortgage, but consider switching from a 30 year to a 15 year mortgage. Payments are not much higher, but the principal payoff is much greater. Do the same with other loans and credit cards. Interest on these loans will gobble up your paycheck. Always try to pay more than the minimum payment.
