editor's note poka-dotWELCOME TO NOVEMBER, FLASHERS!
Is anyone else amazed that it is already November and that Christmas is everywhere in the stores! Well, I plan to put my blinders on for a few more weeks and enjoy everything that November brings. The cooler temps seem to remain elusive at the moment, but that which you have to wait for is appreciated all the more when it arrives! So I continue to wait with great anticipation. We know we may not have the colorful 'leaf season' that our friends to the north have, but if you look closely, you can see changes in our Florida landscape. In our area Golden Rain-Trees are already putting on a color show. In October, these trees produce yellow flowers followed by pink seed pods, then, as a final act this season, its leaves will turn bright yellow. Various types of holly are also revealing their fruit. And, you'll find Black-eyed Susans, Marigolds and other flowers blooming as well as the brilliant foliage of Coleus. Finally, vines, from Virginia Creeper to Poison Ivy, will be losing their green hue for orange and red. If you're looking for the more traditional color changes, plan a short road trip to the Tallahassee or Jacksonville areas. Some of the trees  there that are beginning to change their wardrobes to the warmer tones  include Red Maples, Crape Myrtles and Black Gums. (Isn't it funny how the colors are considered 'warm colors' yet the season itself brings cool weather?) Anyway...

My favorite two inherent sentiments of November are food and gratitude! What could be better?! Food brings people together and the fellowship that comes from 'breaking bread together' is just the best! Around a table conversations buzz, ideas are given life, laughter fills the air, life happens and memories are spawned! Of course Thanksgiving is the ultimate holiday for such to take place. And Thanksgiving...Awww... Who doesn't love Thanksgiving? The most non-commercialized  holiday; which is perhaps the gift we should all be grateful for. While you put that on your list of things to be grateful for...Go ahead and list some of the other things you are thankful for, and please include our veterans. Next Wednesday is Veterans Day. You will find a schedule of local events honoring our veterans in a post below.  You can also remember and honor our men and women in the military by participating in the Holiday For Heroes campaign sponsored by the Military Moms Prayer group. You can read about it too in a post below. Also, please take time to view our special Video of the Week to learn the interesting history of Veterans Day. Remember banks, credit unions, post offices  and all other federal  offices will be closed, along with  many local government offices, but (sorry kids) schools will be open!

Thank you~

LIVE MUSIC HOT SPOT
Celebrating the Glory Days of
Rock and Folk Music

When it comes to music, Vero Beach has blossomed into a musical mecca.  Visit any restaurant or lounge and patrons will enjoy a wide array of music playing many evenings ...not to mention street parties, theatres and other venues now featuring musical acts. Missing from the scene has long-been a concert venue featuring professional, well-known musical talent. The Masters of Music on The Emerson Center's stage has changed that. Great music...close to home, with no traffic, convenient parking and great musical acoustics, allows audiences to sit back, relax and simply enjoy!

When MusicWorks, Inc. and Paris Productions brought Judy Collins to The Emerson Center stage in the spring of 2013, it was a test run to see how well received a concert would be in this venue. That success launched a three-part Masters of Music series at The Emerson Center during 2014-2015.  It showcased musical performances by Livingston Taylor, John Sebastian and the duo of Janis Ian and Tom Paxton at a venue considered to have some of the best musical acoustics in Vero Beach. The production team of concert promoter Rusty Young, in partnership with Beverly and Martin Paris, has now announced a new season of musical performers...one that is highly diversified mixed with a walk down memory lane. If you love music, you are going to want to check out the season's scheduled for Masters of Music. Click Here for tickets. The series kicks off with a benefit concert featuring pianist George Winston on Friday, Nov. 20th, followed by:

When To Use Affect?
Affect with an 'a' means "to influence," as in, "The rain affected Amy's hairdo." Affect can also mean, roughly, "to act in a way that you don't feel," as in, "She affected an air of superiority."
When Should You Use Effect?
Effect with an 'e' has a lot of subtle meanings as a noun, but to me the meaning "a result" seems to be at the core of all the definitions. For example, you can say, "The effect was eye-popping," or "The sound effects were amazing," or "The rain had no effect on Amy's hairdo."

The majority of the time you use affect  as a verb and effect as a noun.

Flu season is fast approaching, and VNA Home Health and Hospice is preparing for its 23rd season of its "Shoo the Flu" vaccination program.

The VNA will offer two types of flu vaccinations:  a preservative-free high-dose vaccine and a preservative-free quadrivalent vaccine. The high-dose vaccine is only for those individuals who are 65 years or older and contain four times the amount the antigens. The quadrivalent vaccine is for individuals 10 years or older and offers broader coverage than the regular flu shot. The pneumonia shot will also be offered at each VNA clinic. All VNA flu vaccines are manufactured in the United States.

FINANCIAL TIP OF THE WEEK
Which controls retirement benefits- A Will or an IRA?
It is important to know that beneficiary retirement benefits generally are not controlled by your will. Rather, their distribution is controlled by the beneficiary form you filled out in association with your retirement plan. For example, if your will states that all of your assets go to Sarah, but your IRA beneficiary form names Nick as beneficiary, Nick will receive the assets in your retirement account.

WEEKEND PROJECT
Easy Fixture Makeover!
Here is a 'cost effective' way to bring about a fresh new look! You can paint over nearly any material (ceramic, plastic, metal etc.) and your 'anything old' will be looking new again! You no longer have to live with old ceramic towel bars, toilet paper holders and dated hardware. Since it is so simple to achieve a facelift, it is almost a crime not to.  I am always fearful of chipping and peeling paint so I always buy some clear XIM primer. It comes in a spray paint and by the quart. I have used it on bathroom terrazzo before painting the floor, metal, plastic etc. and am happy to report that I have never had a problem! It is GREAT stuff! Not always easy to find. Check with your neighborhood Ace Hardware. You will not find it at Lowe's or Home Depot.  Click Here

You can opt to go at 1pm or 2pm and if you like it, you can apply the $35 to the cost of any 8 week course.

DID YOU KNOW?
A DOLLAR BILL CAN CARRY A FLU VIRUS FOR 7 DAYS!
There are so many warnings these days about germs it's hard to know what to watch out for. Just when you think you know what to watch out for, another warning comes along. Along with the dollar bill warning, did you know a restaurant's menu may have more germs than the toilet seats? Web MD has a slideshow depicting the 10 worst public spots for germs.   TODAY'S CHUCKLE
One day a man went to an auction. While there, he bid on a parrot. He really wanted this bird, so he got caught up in the bidding. Each bid received a counter bid and the price went higher and higher! Finally, after he bid way more than he intended, he won the bid - the parrot was his at last!

As he was paying for the parrot, he said to the Auctioneer, "I sure hope this parrot can talk. I would hate to have paid this much for it, only to find out that he can't even talk!"

"Don't worry." said the Auctioneer, "He can talk. Who do you think kept bidding against you?"

  RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Mashed Potato Puffs
adapted from LCBO Food and Drink

3 lbs potatoes, peeled (weigh this out)
1 cup cottage cheese
4 eggs
1/4 cup butter, softened
3 green onions, diced (white part only)
salt and pepper (use white pepper if you don't want flecks)

1. Boil the potatoes until tender. Drain and return to the burner. Continue to cook the potatoes over low heat for about 5 more minutes (stir so they don't stick) this will get all the extra water out of the potatoes.

2. Mash the potatoes. We want NO LUMPS.

3. In another bowl, with a hand mixer, beat the eggs, butter and cottage cheese until fluffy. Add in the potatoes and onions and beat with hand mixer until all mixed together.

4. Put the mixture into a greased casserole dish, or muffin tins. This is where you can let it cool and refridgerate, if you are making them ahead (let them come back to room temperature before baking though).

5. Bake in a 450°F oven for about 25 minutes (a little more if you are making them in a big casserole dish). The potatoes should puff up and get a little brown on top.
