editor's note poka-dot CHANGE CAN BE GOOD, FLASHERS!
Following up on my note last week of things I'm grateful for, I am very thankful for all of you FLASHERS!  I never could have imagined four years ago how FLASH would evolve. It has created another FULL chapter in my life; - yet another reinvention of myself.  Having been an Economics major in  college, I started out as a financial planner before turning to the non profit world. I worked for the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce and when a co-worker left to work for American Cancer Society, I was recruited. I was then lured to the offices of Miami-Dade Crime Watch to create and develop  the Youth Crime Watch program. Best yet...I became a MOM and decided that having my own business would allow me more time with my soon to be baby boy. So, I went into retail!....ha ha ha!... A busy gift shop with my baby boy in a playpen in the storage room!  (More time? NOT!) The arrival of two more bundles of love (my adorable daughters) turned me homeward and I was a stay-at-home mom and almost a FULL TIME volunteer! I have served on boards, worked as an artist and started a high school community-wide 501 (c)(3) non profit in Miami. Now I am a publisher and graphic designer! Who would have thought? It is never too late to reinvent yourself, FLASHERS. Life is absolutely amazing and I can honestly say I have never been bored! My mom is my inspiration and mentor. She lives life to the fullest and at the age of 82 is filing for a patent on an invention she has designed.  She also serves as my 'researcher' and is the reason you find some 'very interesting' features in FLASH. There are no words to tell you how grateful I am to have a Mom like mine! I had an amazing childhood and following her lead has made for a ridiculously incredible life!

It seems it's never too late to try something new or even re-invent yourself. I have friends who were stay-at-home-moms who have had to enter the workforce after a divorce or just to supplement the family income. Some of these gals had been volunteers for charitable organizations, officers in the school PTA, ran the school carnival or chaired the Church bazaar or the Girl Scout Cookie Sales. Their histories as volunteers gave them experiences leading to paying jobs in office work, fund raising, event planning and sales. Don't be afraid to use volunteer activities on your resume. You may even surprise yourself at how much you have learned.

DO YOU KNOW?

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE IN SEA SALT AND TABLE SALT?

Not much, according to the Mayo Clinic. The main difference is in texture and processing. Sea salt is produced through evaporation of ocean water or water from saltwater lakes, usually with little processing. Table salt is typically mined from underground salt deposits. Table salt is more heavily processed to eliminate minerals and usually contains an additive to prevent clumping. After a thyroid study in  the 1920s, most table salt also has added iodine, an essential nutrient that helps maintain a healthy thyroid.  Sea salt  usually does not contain it, but recently some brands have started adding it. (Check the label.) Sea salt and table salt contain comparable amounts of sodium by weight and they both  have the same basic nutritional value. Whichever type of salt you enjoy, do so in moderation. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend limiting sodium to less than 2,300 milligrams a day - or 1,500 milligrams if you're age 51 or older, are black, have high blood pressure, are diabetic or have chronic kidney disease.

If you don't fly much, you may never have used Airplane Mode on your phone or tablet and may not understand what it does. Here are three ways it can prove helpful without ever getting on a plane:

1.  It can save battery life.
2.  It can speed up charging.
3.  It can help to avoid distractions.

ONLY IN AMERICA
Only in America... can a pizza get to your house faster than an ambulance.

Only in America... are there handicap parking places in front of a skating rink.

Only in America... do drugstores make the sick walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescriptions while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front.

Only in America... do people order double cheese burgers, large fries, and a diet Coke.

Only in America... do banks leave both doors to the vault open and then chain the pens to the counters.

Only in America... do they leave cars worth thousands of dollars in the driveway and put their useless junk in the garage.

Only in America... do they buy hot dogs in packages of ten and buns in packages of eight.

Only in America... do they have drive-up ATM machines with Braille lettering.

FLASH TIP OF THE WEEK
CLEAN YOUR COFFEE MAKER
When you think about the germiest spots in your kitchen, you probably don't think your coffee pot is one of the worst, but a 2011 study found just that. People don't consider their coffeemaker a hot bed for bacteria and mold, but it totally is. GOOD HOUSKEEPING recommends that you fill the reservoir with equal parts vinegar and water, and place a paper filter into the machine's empty basket. Position the pot in place, and "brew" the solution halfway. Turn off the machine, and let it sit for 30 minutes. Then, turn the coffeemaker back on, finish the brewing, and dump the full pot of vinegar and water. Rinse everything out by putting in a new paper filter and brewing a full pot of clean water. Repeat to get rid of vinegar odor. Martha Stewart recommends doing this monthly to keep it fresh.
AMAZING TRAIN TRIP ACROSS AMERICA FOR $429!

Adventure traveler and entrepreneur Derek Low made a 3,397-mile journey across America. It took him through 11 states and 4 time zones to cross the entire North America continent from the Pacific to the Atlantic ocean in just four days. He said that traveling by train rewards you with far more stories, experiences and sights than you could ever witness alone in a car with your eyes fixed to the road. He spent $429, but said it can be done for as little as $213. To see the pics and learn how he did it, Click here.

Indian River Medical Center
Earns "A" Grade in Fall 2015 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Score

Indian River Medical Center (IRMC) earned an "A" in patient safety-the top grade in the latest Leapfrog Hospital Safety Score. This study rates how well hospitals protect patients from accidents, errors, injuries and infections. This is IRMC's second consecutive "A" rating, also receiving the honor this spring.
The Hospital Safety Score is compiled under the guidance of the nation's leading experts on patient safety and is  administered by The Leapfrog Group, an independent industry watchdog. The first and only hospital safety rating to be peer-reviewed in the Journal of Patient Safety, the Hospital Safety Score is free to the public and designed to give consumers information they can use to protect themselves and their families when facing a hospital stay.
