Happy Thursday FLASHERS

This past weekend was Mercer University's Author's Day Luncheon at the Intercontinental Hotel in Atlanta. Yep! I'm back in Georgia! This is an event that my husband and I look forward to and attend every year. It sort of kicks off the holiday season for us. This year one of the three featured speakers was Frances Mayes. She is the author of "Under the Tuscan Sun" and last weekend she introduced her new book to us "Under Magnolia: A Southern Memoir." I wish I was as eloquent as she in presenting a case for keeping a life journal.  It truly is the ultimate gift for family members ... Even those that will follow in years to come! Every family should have a member who is willing to take on the roll of archivist. To chronicle the life story of those we love is a gift that will keep on giving.  Because of its tremendous contribution, journaling is something you might want to consider. How wonderful to capture all of life's memories and traditions to be shared and remembered for years to come. It's what made us who we are! This season of family, friends and tradition is a great time to launch your own life journal.

One such tradition in our household is driving in search of Christmas lights. Last year we featured homes with beautiful light displays. We received so many positive comments that we want to feature homes again this year. So FLASHERS, please send in addresses or cross streets of homes that you know 'light up the season'! We will feature them next week and with your help I have no doubt that we will all enjoy singing along to our favorite Christmas carols as we go in search of sparkling lights. This seasonal night outing is not only worthy of a journaling post, but is the perfect activity to fill one of the '12 Days of Christmas activities' you will see in the post below.  Don't forget to  Email us your favorite light displays.  Keep the Merry in your hearts!

Thank you~

Christmas Carol Of The Week
This week's Christmas Carol is obviously one of my favorites! It is a rendition of O Holy Night by II Divo! It builds to an incredible crescendo which sends chills through me. It is contrasted by the serene voices of a boys choir. You too will love it. Click here to listen while you browse today's issue of FLASH! Enjoy!

"This is Vale, a sweet and loving kitty who was abandoned at the front door of the shelter with her two kittens. She is friendly and sociable with other cats, and loves playing with toys. She is desperately looking for a forever home where she will be loved and given lots of attention. Adoption fee is $85.
Did you know? H.A.L.O.'s main shelter is on the US 1 in Sebastian, and we also have an adoption center in the Indian River Mall, by Sears, which has just celebrated its first anniversary. More than 100 cats and kittens have been adopted from the Mall location, adding to the thousands adopted out by H.A.L.O. since its founding in 2006. H.A.L.O. is Indian River County's only no-kill animal shelter, so please consider a donation. Visit http://www.halorescuefl.org/ or call 772-589-7297."

                CREATE A HOLIDAY TRADITION
Handmade Ornament With A Special Tradition Inside

This is a great family tradition that the entire family will enjoy. As the years fly by, you will have an 'ornament journal' to enjoy and cherish each and every year! Sometime before Christmas morning, find the time to write your children a letter summarizing the past year. Make sure to include how lucky you feel to have him/her in your life.  This is a tradition you can easily tweak. You can write a letter to your friend, parent, spouse or special someone. Just place the letter in a decorated box to place on the tree each year.

HOW TO TIP FOR THE HOLIDAYS
Tis the season for gifts and tipping. Do you ever wonder if you are doing the right thing when it comes to tipping? You certainly want to 'show the love' to those who help you throughout the year. You know who I'm talking about; the one that helps you keep your sanity by helping with the kids, the hairdresser who doubles as a therapist, your mail carrier etc. This Kiplinger quiz will help you take the guess work out of the tipping quandary

   BEER? WINE? OR LIQUOR?

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

'Tis the season to be jolly, and consequently, there may be more parties than usual. And when it comes to drinking alcohol, you might be surprised to know

that there's not as much difference as you may think. This is how it adds up according to the National Consumers League (NCL).

  • Beer contains between 4 and 7 percent alcohol by volume, with the average being 5 percent alcohol by volume. a standard bottle of beer at 12 oz. x 5 percent alcohol by volume = 0.6 oz. of alcohol/serving.
  • The same is true of wine. The standard serving of wine is 5 oz., which generally contains between 11 and 13 percent alcohol by volume. 5 oz. x 12 percent alcohol by volume = 0.6 oz. of alcohol/serving.
  • Liquor (distilled spirits) is most often consumed in mixed drinks with 1.5-oz. spirits. Sometimes spirits (vodka, gin, scotch, bourbon, etc.) are mixed with water, club soda, or juice or served "straight" or "on the rocks." No matter how spirits are consumed, a standard serving (1.5 oz.) of 80 proof (40 percent alcohol by volume) of distilled spirits has the same amount of alcohol as standard servings of beer and wine. So 1.5 oz. x 40 percent alcohol by volume = 0.6 oz. of alcohol/serving.
  •

This means that a typical or standard serving of beer, wine, or spirits each contain 0.6 fluid ounces of alcohol.

How Much Cellphone Data Do You Need?
There are 1,000 megabytes in a gigabyte and the average smartphone owner nowadays uses 2.9GB. Light users don't need much, like the 30% percent of smartphone owners who currently use only 500MB. It probably comes as no surprise that younger owners use more than those over 55. This article from MONEY magazine might sort it out and help you learn whether you are paying for more than you need.

    DID YOU KNOW?
There are approximately 25-30 million Real Christmas Trees sold in the U.S. every year, but last year there were about 12 million artificial trees purchased. In the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll, 58% say they use an artificial tree rather than a real one. That's a sharp increase from 40 percent in a Gallup poll 15 years ago. The artificial ones are favored by 70% of seniors and 57% of 20-somethings. Apparently, those who purchase the real trees are in the middle of those age groups and it would be fair to surmise that many are probably families with children.
      TODAY'S CHUCKLE
The judge asked the prisoner, "What are you charged with?"
"Doing my Christmas shopping early," replied the defendant.
"That's not an offense," said the judge. "How early were you doing this shopping?"
"Before the store opened," said the prisoner.
    FLASH TIP OF THE WEEK
    THE CLUTTER BASKET

Clutter seems to be a problem in most households, and it's especially annoying during the holidays. (The Band-Aid box just doesn't look right next to the holly on the mantle, does it?)  Here's a  thought that might help. Get a large basket, - I prefer one with a handle, - and go from room to room picking up objects that are out of place, then tuck the basket away in an unseen corner or closet and let the family know where they can claim their 'stuff'. Once a week or more often if needed, carry the basket with what's left to the appropriate places and put the items away.
