HAPPY THURSDAY, FLASHERS
I'm always sad to hear how many people suffer from depression during the holidays. Holidays are supposed to be a time of joy and celebration, but for many people they are anything but. Depression may occur at any time of the year, but the stress and anxiety of the holiday season may cause even those who are usually content to experience loneliness and a lack of fulfillment. According to one 1999 Canadian study, the most common stressor for feelings of loneliness were "being without family." Recently, I received the following email and I love the concept of a 'happiness bank'.
The Happiness Bank
The 92-year old, petite, well-poised and proud lady, who is fully dressed each morning by eight o'clock, with her hair fashionably arranged and makeup perfectly applied, even though she is legally blind, moved to a nursing home today. Her husband of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary. After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, she smiled sweetly when told her room was ready. As she maneuvered her walker to the elevator, I provided a visual description of her tiny room, including the eyelet sheets that had been hung on her window.
"I love it," she stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having just been presented with a new puppy. "Mrs. Jones, you haven't even been to the room yet, just wait."
"That doesn't have anything to do with it," she replied. "Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn't depend on how the furniture is arranged, - it's how I arrange my mind. I already decided to love it. It's a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice; I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do. Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open I'll focus on the new day and all the happy memories are stored away just for this time in my life. Old age is like a bank account: you withdraw from it what you've put in. So, my advice to you would be to deposit a lot of happiness in the bank account of memories. Thank you for your part in filling my memory bank. I am still depositing."
I've always liked the quote, "don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened." Some attribute it to Dr. Seuss, while others claim it's an anonymous proverb, but it doesn't really matter who said it, 'it's the thought that counts.' - right? I think we all can have our own happiness bank. Personally, I could dwell on the fact that my three children are adults now and that it may not be possible for us to all be together this Christmas, but that could make me sad. I prefer to turn to my 'happiness bank' and remember all the fun ( - and frequently very funny) holidays of the past.
I'm wishing happy times this Christmas to all of you flashers to deposit in your own' happiness banks'!
Thank you~

NEED STOCKING STUFFER IDEAS?
Stockings will always be one of my favorite Christmas childhood memories! That childish excitement filled with anticipation on Christmas morning is still so vivid in my mind! My four sisters and I would gather in one of our bedrooms where we would explore each of our stockings together. It was the calm before the storm and now I see how it bought our parents an extra few minutes of precious sleep on Christmas morning. (...tricky!) I still love stockings to this day and I have such fun finding little treasures throughout the year to include in my children's stockings...even though they are grown. Need some stocking stuffer suggestions?

"Hi I'm Mandy!"
I was surrendered because my family got evicted and I couldn't go with them and turns out I was pregnant! I am very sweet, smart, and affectionate and was a great mom to 2 beautiful puppies that are now in homes. I am great with other dogs and would be a perfect fit into any family. I am praying to be in a family before Christmas. My adoption fee is $200. Visit our website or call 772.589.7297

The Accidental Email
Did you ever hit the send button too soon in your email and wind up sending it to someone you really didn't mean to send it to? We have! - But did you know that you can 'unsend' sent emails? This feature exists on many emails, but you may have to search for it if you don't use Gmail. If you're using Gmail, this nifty little feature delays the send time of your emails by a couple of seconds, giving you the option to 'unsend' what's already been 'sent.' All you have to do is enable this feature. The following steps will help you do that:
- Login to your Gmail account
- Look to the upper right hand corner of your screen
- You will find the Gear symbol
- Click on it
- In the drop down box, Settings will appear
- Click on Settings
- Once there, look to the top where you will find different tab options
- Towards the right hand side you will see Labs. Click it
- This will direct you to the Gmail Labs page
- Scroll down till you find Undo Send
- Click Enable
- Scroll down a little more and hit Save Changes at the bottom
- Once you send a message, an Undo option will appear each time you send an email

 DID YOU KNOW?
TODAY IS WRIGHT BROTHERS DAY
...AND FLASH GIVES A 'SHOUT-OUT' TO
ELITE AIRLINES!
Wright Brothers Day is celebrated in the United States on December 17 each year. The date commemorates the Wright brothers' first successful flight in heavier-than-air, mechanically propelled craft, accomplished on December 17, 1903, near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Consequently, I think it's the perfect time to welcome Elite Airlines to Vero Beach and congratulate them on their inaugural flight to New York last Thursday. A friend who was on that flight told us it couldn't have been any easier or better...a comfortable 2hr 45minute flight to Newark, NJ and a short train ride into the city. They will be making round trip flights on Thursdays and Sundays which is the perfect schedule for a fun 3 night weekend or longer stay. I hope all our Flashers will support Elite Airlines so we can keep them on our city!

FLASH TIP OF THE WEEK
I've noticed at many stores (usually near the check-out counter) you can purchase large plastic tote bags with colorful holiday or other themes for about $1.99. These are cheaper that a large paper gift bag and can serve the same purpose. It can even be re-used for groceries, as a beach bag or for any other tote bag need you have. Keep an eye out for them...They do come in handy!

Youth Guidance and Indian River Academy have been working together to provide a mentoring group for the third and four grade students at the school. On November 20th, a celebration of that effort took place. Called the Pine Car 500, children raced the cars they had spent the previous five weeks carving and painting in front of their peers. The star of the show was a state of the art racetrack that had been purchased with a grant from the Indian River Club Outreach Foundation.

MILITARY MOMS SEND HOLIDAY CHEER TO OUR HEROES!
First Photo: The Military Moms Prayer Group's 10th Annual Heroes drive had an outpouring of helpers--including a team from Camp Haven -- to help box up packages for the troops recently at Christ Church Vero Beach's community center. Hundred of cards from schoolchildren put a finishing touch on the boxes, as did phone cards from PakMail-Beachside, which donated phone cards generated by their Cell Phones for Soldiers program. The packages will be arriving in time for Christmas to servicemen and women deployed around the world. For information, call: 231-2221.
