Happy 'Almost' New Year FLASHERS!

Days continue to slip away and we find ourselves just about to slide into 2015! I hope that this past week was spent celebrating the holidays with your family and friends while making memories that will be cherished in the years to come. This Christmas will be one that our family will remember for a while. We all came together at our farm in Boston, Georgia. Our youngest, Lilly, was the last to pull in at about 11:00 on Christmas Eve. She had a scratchy throat that quickly turned into the flu with a fever of almost 103. She was quite gracious and shared it with 4 out of 5 of us. We were a site! Not quite a picturesque Christmas card. Lilly has always had a way of phrasing things and as she was leaving and coughing and coughing... she said, 'If we had to be sick...being sick together is a whole lot better than being sick miles apart.' In some bizarre way I suppose that wraps up the meaning of family! She actually nailed it one more time! Together is better...regardless of what you are going through. Go through it together! This week's FLASH is an abbreviated version. Enjoy and have a fabulous time ushering in a brand new year together with your family and friends! I saw this recently and thought it was a great lest of what to strive for as we head into 2015!

GOOD LUCK FOODS FOR NEW YEAR'S

Do you eat special foods on January 1st to bring you luck in the new year? If so, your choices may be influenced by where you are from. Southerners usually opt for Hoppin' John (Black-eyed peas and rice) to bring 'prosperity', with a side of Collard Greens (the color of money) and Cornbread (the color of gold). If you're from the North, chances are you will have Pork because the animals root forward ... towards the future. There are some similarities in the list of 'lucky foods' and they include these six categories: grapes, greens, fish, pork, legumes, and cakes. Whatever your superstition, make sure to stock up on the good stuff and stay clear of some other foods.  Lobster, I know...drats, is considered a less than good idea because the crustaceans move backwards and is thought to lead to setbacks. Chicken is also discouraged because the bird scratches backwards, which could cause regret or dwelling on the past. Some believe it is best to remove all winged fowl from the menu so that your 'luck' won't fly away! Need some menu ideas click here. Bon Appetit! :)

KEEPING NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS

45 percent of American adults ring in the New Year with a resolution, but according to statistics, almost half will give up on their goals within six months. If you don't want to be a 'statistic', REAL SIMPLE MAGAZINE suggests these strategies:

1. Be specific. If you want to lose weight, set a goal in number of pounds.

2. Go public. Let friends and family know and request their support.

3. Substitute good behavior for bad. (Example: A walk instead of an afternoon

    snack.)

4. Track your progress by keeping a daily written record.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'VE BEEN SINGING ALL THESE YEARS?

Auld Lang Syne was partially written by Robert Burns in the 1700's, it was first published in 1796 after Burns' death. Early variations of the song were sung prior to 1700 and inspired Burns to produce the modern rendition. An old Scotch tune, 'Auld Lang Syne' literally means 'old long ago,' or simply, 'the good old days.'  Here are the lyrics to the first verse.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and days of auld lang syne?
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we'll take a cup of kindness yet,

for auld lang syne.

FUN NEW YEAR IDEAS FOR YOU!
Ever wonder how you could put all of those wonderful photo holiday cards to good use? Well, FLASH has a perfect idea.  I have personally saved photo cards from family and friends throughout the years. If you have done the same, now is a great time to go through them and pick out your favorites. Punch a hole in the card, run the balloon ribbon through it and hang over your table for all of your guests to enjoy! They will have a great time reminiscing as you ring in the new year! Of course it would be nearly as much fun with this year's cards.  Here are some other ideas to create a memorable New Year's Eve!
  1. Dim your lights and flood the house with votive candles. Candles are the most romantic and cost effective way to create a festive, atmosphere! To make your candles burn longer, put them in a zip lock bag in the freezer the day before your party.
  2. Buy pink bulbs at any local home store (Home Depot) and swap them into your lamps for the night; you will be amazed at the difference it makes and the atmosphere it creates!
  3. They may be silly, but people still love the traditional New Year's Eve party items such as noisemakers, hats, tiaras, boas, and horns. I always recommend putting these items on a platter or in a big decorative bowl and letting people grab items as they wish.
  4. Games are always fun too! Click Here for ideas!
  5. Ask all of your guests to give you their three favorite songs when they RSVP for the party. Create a custom CD from this list with all of your guests' favorites!
  6. On New Year's Eve, serve a specialty drink at the start of the party and champagne at midnight, and then invite your guests to BYOB their favorites. As the host, be sure to provide all the setups such as: soda, tonic, soft drinks, lemons, limes, plenty of ice, etc.
  7. At midnight there will be lots of kissing going on with everyone ringing in the New Year. Place mints around the house to keep things fresh!
  8. As a party favor...Burn extra CDs for your guests with all of the tunes from your memorable evening! It will be something they can enjoy long into the new year!

  FLASH VIDEO OF THE WEEK

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Personalized Fortune Cookies

These Homemade Fortune Cookies are a really fun recipe to make for New Years. You can put your own personalized fortunes in them and gift them to family and friends!
Ingredients
3 - Egg Whites
3/4 - Cup Sugar
1/2 - Cup Melted & Cooled Butter
1/4 - Teaspoon Vanilla Extract
1/4 - Teaspoon Almond Extract
3 - Tablespoons Water
1 - Cup Flour

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
2. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper, and have your fortune strips ready to go.

3. Use mixer to whip the egg whites and sugar on high speed for 2 minutes or until frothy.
4. Add melted butter, vanilla, almond extract, water, flour and beat after each addition. Make sure each ingredient is absorbed before adding the next.
5. With a tablespoon, spoon the batter onto the parchment paper and spread it out into an even 3 inch circle. It's recommended not doing any more than 2-3 at a time, since they set very quickly and you will not be able to fold more than that.
6. Bake cookies for 7-8 minutes or until the edges brown slightly. If you let them brown too much, they will snap when you shape them. Conversely, if they don't brown a little bit, they will also break (but tear, rather than snapping).
7. Remove them from the oven and quickly scoop the circle off, and fold your fortune cookie in half, into a semicircle. Slip your note into the cookie (quickly) because if you slip it in right at the beginning, the cookie will be too hot and your paper will stick to the cookie.
8. Place semicircle cookies onto the edge of a cup, and quickly fold the ends down, to shape into a fortune cooking.
9. Hold the cookie down to let it set, and stick it in a muffin tin to let it cool and hold its shape.

10. Serve and enjoy!

TIPS

Since the cookies will be very hot when they come out of the oven, you can use a thin towel to handle them or use gloves.
