Happy November FLASHERS~

Our apologies for a delayed delivery. Constant Contact has been experiencing difficulties and we were unable to access our account to schedule our mailing. Things are back up and running now....ENJOY!

Did you notice...November eased in since last Thursday's issue. Boy, do I love November! It's the month of friends, family, gratitude, great food and the flawless introduction to the jollity and energy of the holiday season. Wow! You just 'gotta' love November! And speaking of gratitude, I think there's one thing on which we can agree to be thankful. The election is over and whether your candidate won or lost.... no more political commercials! I'm sure that you're as tired as I am of all the mud-slinging. I wish the current politicians would take a page from the late President Reagan's play book. His wit and humor not only helped him to get elected, he could even make his opponents laugh. (To watch a clip from his debate with Richard Mondale, click here.) Ahh, - but back to November. It's no secret that things can begin to get a bit hectic as we approach the holidays. The more prepared we are the better. So we will be including a November check list in our next few issues to help keep us all on track. Next Tuesday is Veterans Day. As a country it would be hard to conceive where we would be without the devotion, courage and sacrifice of our military.  We all have a duty to express our appreciation and we have a chance to do so on this day. Veterans Day is the official US holiday honoring all those who have served in the armed forces and I personally feel that we all have a duty to express our appreciation. Armistice Day and Remembrance Day are also celebrated on the 11th and recognized in other parts of the world as well, marking the end of WWI hostilities which ended at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of the year back in 1918. There are several ceremonies planned for Veterans Day. Please check the calendar. The Military Moms Prayer group is in the thick of their 'Holidays For Heroes' campaign. Pick up a special mailing kit to give our troops a taste of home for the holidays. Click Here for locations where you can pick up your mailing kit and suggestion list. Next Thursday Bonnie Alberga and the ladies of the Elks Club will be collecting cookies to mail to our troops for Thanksgiving.  Drop off cookies at 9:00 next Thursday at the Elks Club.  Also make sure to take note of the Navy Seal post below. The Navy Seal Music Festival and Muster is this weekend. Have a great weekend, FLASHERS!  There is a lot going on so check out the calendar and get out and enjoy everything our community has to offer!

YOU'RE INVITED
Join us tomorrow ~ Friday, Nov 7th @ 10:30 AM

  1. Start a deep clean on the house. Focus on a room a day and you will be clean and organized before you know it. You will sure be glad you did when the holiday festivities begin to take over your life!
  2. Make plans for Thanksgiving. If you are the lucky host this year then make sure you plan ahead. Plan your menu, shopping days, and prepare any dishes ahead of time that will keep or freeze well. Remember that you want to have fun too and the best way to do that is to be super organized. Launder all table linens, and polish silver if you plan to use it. Create place cards, hang a door wreath, make you music play list/CD, plan for your bar, (remember kids like special drinks too), plan your centerpiece, plan a craft or game for the kids, set your table a few days in advance to ensure you have the necessary number of seats, place settings, serving pieces etc. (My mom always writes out everything she plans to serve on little cards that she places on serving pieces to ensure she has planned accordingly. ) Buy plenty zip locks and storage containers so you can serve up a take home 'Thanksgiving doggie bag' to your guests. Something they will all truly be 'thankful' for. After all ... What is Thanksgiving without the leftovers for that perfect turkey sandwich the next day?
  3. Plan to participate in a community charity event. Get your family and friends to participate too! There is so much going on and it's no secret that when you help others you yourself are fulfilled as well! Serve at a community soup kitchen, invite a friend, elderly individual or anyone you know with no family to your Thanksgiving dinner, register for Habitats Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving, donate to a food drive, or 'Support Our Troops' and pick up one of the Military Moms Holiday Boxes to be filled and  mailed.
  4. Make your Christmas card list and buy your cards. Make your gift list while you're at it and start shopping bazaars and even the VB Museum of Art Gift Store Open House. (see post below)
  5. Make your personal list of things you are Thankful for and then sit back and smile and enjoy the beginning of this wonderful month.

GOVERNMENT BLOOPER

Last week the Associated Press reported that Medicare paid over $292,000 in drug benefits to 158 dead people! Apparently there is an allowance in the Medicare prescription drug program that permits prescriptions to be filled up to 32 days after a patient's death. To make matters worse, the inspector general's investigators found that about 80 percent of the prescriptions for dead beneficiaries were  filled at neighborhood pharmacies. (Ooops!) Medicare said that the problem would be fixed. We sure hope so. It's bad enough when we hear that dead people vote, but this is really going too far don't you think? 5 ESSENTIAL FOODS FOR WEIGHT LOSS
With the holidays approaching, would you like to lose a few pounds now rather than worry about taking them off afterward? The ShareCare website has some unusual tips for losing weight that I had not heard before. It claims that these five foods are essential for weight loss.

1.Cashew nuts (yum!)

2. Pomegranate (juice or fruit)

3. Squash (all types)

4. Cocoa (??)

5. Adzuki beans (I'd never heard of these, but you might ask at your local market. Otherwise they can be ordered online.)

WEEKEND PROJECT
Install a plank wall!

With the holidays right around the corner there are few weekends left to get some weekend projects
completed.  Adding a plank wall to an otherwise boring surface will provide a big impact for relatively little cost. If you are a bit more adventurous why not try color washing or painting a few of the planks. It will give you a completely different feel. Here are pictures of a couple of variations. Click Here for directions on the A to Z for installing your focus wall. HAVE FUN!

  TODAY'S CHUCKLE

A mother was working in the kitchen listening to her young son playing with his electric train in the living room. She heard the train stop and her son said, "All of you idiots who want off, get the heck off now, cause this is the last stop!" The mother scolded her son and said, "We don't talk like that in this house.  Go to your room and you are to stay there for TWO HOURS. When you come out, you may play with your train, but I want you to use nicer language." Two hours later, the son came out of the bedroom and resumed playing with his train. Soon the train stopped and the mother heard her son say, "All passengers who are getting off here, we thank you for riding with us today and hope your trip was a pleasant one." She hears the little boy continue, "For those of you who are just boarding, we  hope you will have a pleasant and relaxing journey with us today." As the mother began to smile, the child added, "For those of you who are angry about the two hour delay, please see the mean witch in the kitchen!"

FLASH TIP OF THE WEEK

HOW TO UNCLOG A SINK

Don't call a plumber until you try this tip from the THIS OLD HOUSE website. Most minor sink clogs can be cleared with a plunger. Partially fill the sink with water and then start plunging. Vigorously work the plunger up and down several times before quickly pulling it off the drain opening. If it's a double-bowl kitchen sink, stuff a wet rag into one drain opening while you plunge the other one. If it's a bath sink, stuff the rag into the overflow hole so air doesn't escape. In both cases, the rag helps deliver the pressure directly to the clog.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to a Reader's Digest  report in May of last year, a survey of 80,000 people around the world found that guys crave romance more than women. 33% more men than women said it bothers them "a lot" that their significant other isn't more romantic. Surprised??

HIDDEN MOTHERS
In the 1800S, trying to keep a young child still for a photograph was even more difficult than it is today. Because the shutters of old cameras needed to remain open longer, any movement could cause  the picture to be blurry. The   photographer's solution was to drape the mother in a tapestry or other fabric to disguise her as a chair so she could hold the child. To view some of
these amusing old  photos. Click here.

  RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Easy Milk Chocolate S'More Bars
Ingredients
  • ½ cup butter, softened
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1⅓ cups flour
  • ¾ cup graham cracker crumbs
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2 Giant Hershey's milk chocolate bars (7 ounces each)
  • 1 jar marshmallow cream, 7 ounces
Instructions
  1. Spray an 8" baking pan with cooking spray. I also lined it with sprayed parchment paper but that is not necessary.
  2. Place graham crackers in food processor & pulse until fine crumbs. Or you can just put them in a ziploc & crush them with a rolling pin, etc. Set aside.
  3. In large mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugars with electric mixer. Add egg & vanilla & mix until combined.
  4. In a separate bowl combine flour, graham cracker crumbs, baking powder & salt. Slowly add this mixture to the butter mixture and mix until combined.
  5. Divide dough in half & press half of dough in the bottom of the prepared pan.
  6. Place chocolate bars over dough, side by side. I had to cut about ½ inch from one of my chocolate bars for them to fit perfectly.
  7. Spread the marshmallow cream over the chocolate bars.
  8. Roll out the remaining dough into an 8 inch square. I rolled it out on the inside of one of the chocolate bar wrappers and then turned it over on top of the marshmallow cream.
  9. Bake @ 350 degrees for 30 minutes, until lightly browned. Cool completely before cutting.
