Hi FLASHERS & Happy Thursday~
Oh my! The year is more than half over and summer is speeding by as well. When I was a kid, I used to measure time from Christmas to Christmas and it seemed to take forever, now it will be here before we know it. Why does time go so much faster as we grow older? It seemed that just a few years ago, my children were babies, and now my youngest will be turning 24 tomorrow! (Happy Birthday, Lillian!) I must admit, I think I'm the gift recipient...she's coming to visit for the weekend at the farm in Boston, Ga.! I'm so looking forward to time with my girl! :) As time speeds by it makes me realize how important each day is. We must all be mindful of that and do our best to make the most of every single day. Though speeding by, there is still plenty of time to make some great summer memories. You will find several suggestions in this issue. I love the 'bucket list' in the post below that I recently found online. What a great summer to-do list!
As I have explored programs and ideas for FLASH this summer, I have identified one goal that will require the help of our FLASHERS. I want FLASH to become more FLASHER interactive. I want to hear from you. I want to know what FLASH ideas, tips, recipes, etc you have tried. I thrive on the feedback I receive and I sincerely thank those of you who take a moment to drop me an email from time to time. Please always feel free to do so. Let me know what you like in an issue, send a free post for our bulletin board, tell me what you would like to see, your suggestions, your constructive criticism, your ideas, your tips....Anything about Everything just like our logo says. I will begin to include a contact link at the end of each of our newsletters. Can't wait to hear from you!

ELECTRICAL 101 PROGRAM GRADUATES 5
READY TO WORK ELECTRICAL HELPERS

The Electrical 101 Program, a joint ministry facilitated by Indian River Habitat For Humanity and conducted by Feed The Lambs Enrichment Programs just graduated five at risk men from the Electrical 101 Program. As ready-to-work electrical helpers, these men completed an 18 week, 50 hour course in electrical construction skills and received a combination of classroom, hands-on workshop and on-site construction training. They are now trained to work under licensed electricians performing residential, commercial and industrial electrical construction. All are available for immediate employment and all graduates are enrolling in the Indian River State College Electrical Apprentice Program.
The Electrical 101 Program is open to at risk young men and women who want to pursue technical careers but do not possess the required background. Contact Jim Kerns at (772) 571-3605 to hire any of the graduates and for more information about the program.

Little Acts of Kindness
All hearts are warmed when we catch a glimpse of some 'good news' on the actual news. It seems all too often that the news focuses on the negative. The latest shooting, robbery, drowning, accident etc. I will never really ever understand that. Negative news will never be our focus with FLASH. We are all about the positive! The good things going on in life and our community and we love to hear snippets of good news from our FLASHERS. We want your 'pay it forward' stories...Any bit of news that will put a smile on our FLASHERS... Send it our way! We are also going to start spotlighting our local Positive People again in August and we ask for your nominations.
Make sure you watch our video of the week. It will bring a smile to your face! |
For those who may not be able to attend the fundraiser on July 13th and/or want to make a financial contribution, there is a fundraising website set up for the Roberts family at http://www.gofundme.com/aroc8o. It also covers their story. A benefit account has also been set up

DID YOU KNOW?
On May 14, 1918, the U.S. Post Office issued a stamp to commemorate the first regularly scheduled airmail service. Only one sheet of 100 stamps was produced before they realized a major error. The picture of the Curtis biplane on the stamp was printed upside down! With only 100 in print, the 'Jenny stamp' as it is known, has become one of the most valuable collectors' items of all time. Today each individual stamp is valued at around 1 million dollars. For a limited time, The Post Office has issued a $2.00 stamp reproduction of the original. Issued in sets of six for $12. Who knows...It might someday become a collector's item in it's own right. So, the moral? What may first appear to be a major 'faux pas' may turn out to be an actual treasure! Always keep your eye out for the next treasure, FLASHERS!

TOP 100 TEEN BOOKS
If you're encouraging your teenager to read this summer, this list might help. A couple of years ago, National Public Radio surveyed 75,000 to pick the top 100 books for teenagers. To view the list, Click here.
If you have a child that is finding it difficult to read or seems disinterested, you might try going to the library and getting books on tape that your child can follow along with. This idea was a Godsend for me with one of my children that is now a grown adult and can always be found with a book in hand!

HARMLESS DISH SOAP INSECTICIDE FOR APHIDS
If aphids are infecting your hibiscus or other plants, here is an insecticide that you can make at home:
1. Pour 2 tablespoons liquid dish soap into 1 gallon
water. Stir the dish soap into the water and
transfer the contents into a plastic spray bottle.
2. Spray the affected plant's leaves on both sides with the soapy mixture. Pay attention to coat
the underside of the leaves with the mixture, as this is where you'll find the highest
concentration of aphids.
3. Spray the soapy mixture directly onto any aphids you notice falling from the leaves. The
aphids are small, and it's necessary to shoot them with the soapy water to kill the unwanted
pests.
4. Rinse away the soapy residue after one to two hours. Allowing the soap to remain on the
leaves for longer than a few hours can cause damage and burning. Use a garden hose or
spray bottle filled with plain water to remove the residue.
5. Reapply the mixture every few days, or as necessary, to keep the aphid infestation under
control.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
NO-CHURN VANILLA ICE CREAM
Cool off with this delightful treat from Martha Stewart that uses an electric mixer instead of a churn. It only takes ten minutes to mix, and even the kids can do it. Try adding other flavors of your choice, but always before folding in the whipped cream.
INGREDIENTS
1 can sweetened condensed milk
2 teaspoons real vanilla extract
2 cups heavy cream
In a medium bowl, stir together condensed milk, and vanilla. In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, beat cream on high until stiff peaks form, 3 minutes. With a rubber spatula, gently fold whipped cream into condensed milk mixture. Pour into a 4 1/2-by-8 1/2-inch loaf pan. Freeze until firm, 6 hours

Delta Company 2/16 served in Vietnam from July 1967 through April 1970 and recently held a reunion in Vero Beach. Michele Mackett, A member of the Military Moms Prayer Group, wanted to give them the 'homecoming' they never had back in the sixties and seventies and enlisted other members of the group to attend Memorial Island ceremony for the fallen from Delta Company. A gift was prepared for each veteran to thank them for their service. The veterans were overwhelmed by the 'homecoming' they received and send a special thank you to the County and City of Vero Beach residents, governments and Military Moms Prayer Group who took the time to attend one of the several gatherings. It is so nice to be remembered and appreciated.

The Navy SEALs and other arms of the military have a long history of training canines for active duty. Dogs have been trained for duty as scouts, trackers and bomb detectors. During the Civil War, dogs were used to deliver messages; In WWI, they served as mascots and assaulters. In the Vietnam War, active duty canines are credited with saving an estimated 10,000 lives.
Now a canine ambassador has arrived at the Navy SEAL Museum. A four month old female Dutch Shephert "Mika" was trained by Baden K9 based in Ontario Canada and Trident Fitness Tactical, based in Orlando. After Mika completes her training, Baden K9 will donate her to the National Navy SEAL Museum in Fort Pierce. Mika will also help with entertaining and providing comfort to the SEALs and SEAL families that visit Trident House.
