editor's note poka-dotSurprise FLASHERS!

I know we were not scheduled to publish this week...BUT...We couldn't stay away! It's Father's Day this weekend. We just couldn't let that slip by. So, with this special issue we provide an enthusiastic 'shout out' to all of the fabulous FLASH fathers.  You are a special group. Below are a few of my favorite quotes about fathers.  I hope you enjoy! My father passed away 10 years ago this past Memorial Day. I miss him and carry him with me every day. It's funny how a certain movement I make will make me think...'That's just like, Dad'. He was an avid angler with many world records.  On my recent kayaking excursions I often think of the thrill he would get out of my catches on a kayak! It doesn't matter how much time passes...his presence is still felt every day and he lives on through me. If you are lucky to still have your Dad around...Let him know how much he has impacted your world and how much you love him!

Our next issue will now publish on June 26th.  Not too worry about missing anything because our calendar displays events for the next two weeks. ENJOY!

 QUOTES
Any fool can be a Father, but it takes a real man to be a Daddy!!
Quote by: Philip Whitmore Snr

"The most important thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother."
Quote by: Unknown

My father gave me the greatest gift anyone could give another person, he believed in me.
(See Coach Valvano in the FLASH Video of the week)
Quote by: Jim Valvano

A man never stands as tall as when he kneels to help a child.
Quote by: Knights of Pythagoras

4 years: My Daddy can do anything!
7 years: My Dad knows a lot...a whole lot.
8 years: My father does not know quite everything.
12 years: Oh well, naturally Father does not know that either.
14 years: Oh, Father? He is hopelessly old-fashioned.
21 years: Oh, that man-he is out of date!
25 years: He knows a little bit about it, but not much.
30 years: I must find out what Dad thinks about it.
35 years: Before we decide, we will get Dad's idea first.
50 years: What would Dad have thought about that?
60 years: My Dad knew literally everything!
65 years: I wish I could talk it over with Dad once more.

FATHERS' DAY POEM

My Dad
When I was just a tiny kid,
Do you remember when,
The time you kissed my bruises,
Or cleaned by soiled chin?

You scrambled for the balls I hit,
(Short-winded more than not,)
Yet, every time we'd play a game,
You praised the "outs" I caught.

It seems like only yesterday,
You wiped away my tears,
And late at night I called your name,
To chase away my fears.

Though time has changed your handsome grip,
Your hair is snowy white,
You gait's a little slower now,
Thick glasses help your sight.

Oh, do I thirst for years gone by,
To be that growing lad,
Re-living all of the memories,
Of growing with my dad.

ANOTHER POEM ON FATHER'S DAY
(Today's family often have both parents working...
That being said...many of us grew up with a Dad that fits the description in this poem.)

Fathers are wonderful people
Too little understood,
And we do not sing their praises
As often as we should...

For, somehow, Father seems to be
The man who pays the bills,
While Mother binds up little hurts
And nurses all our ills...

And Father struggles daily
To live up to "HIS IMAGE"
As protector and provider
And "hero or the scrimmage"...

And perhaps that is the reason
We sometimes get the notion,
That Fathers are not subject
To the thing we call emotion,

But if you look inside Dad's heart,
Where no one else can see
You'll find he's sentimental
And as "soft" as he can be...

But he's so busy every day
In the grueling race of life,
He leaves the sentimental stuff
To his partner and his wife...

But Fathers are just WONDERFUL
In a million different ways,
And they merit loving compliments
And accolade of praise,

For the only reason Dad aspires
To fortune and success
Is to make the family proud of him
And to bring them happiness...

And like OUR HEAVENLY FATHER,
He's a guardian and a guide,
Someone that we can count on
To be ALWAYS ON OUR SIDE.

FOR DADS AND 'WANNABE' DADS

Get that cell phone out of your pocket! A new study shows that guys keeping smart phones in their pockets has the potential to lower sperm count and contribute to infertility. Phones emit electromagnetic radiation (EMR) which could affect sperm count. This new study examined 10 preceding studies and showed that having your phone close-by can lower fertility by 9%.
SKIN CARE FOR MEN THAT YOUR LADIES WILL LOVE

According to Huff Post 'Style' all men should heed a few skin care tips.  You'll feel better and the lady in your life will appreciate it too!

1. Wash your face with a good cleanser. This is a no-brainer. But the reality is, either you guys are doing it all wrong or just not doing it at all. Men are often guilty of taking super hot showers and using harsh soaps or face scrubs, according to dermatologist and psychiatrist Dr. Amy Wechsler. She adds, "This makes your skin dry and when your skin is dry you appear wrinkly and much older." "Aveeno  Men's Face Wash is a perfect choice for daily use. It contains colloidal oatmeal that will hydrate while it cleanses."

2. If you're going the drugstore route, Dr. Wechsler suggests pumping the brakes before buying a razor with several blades. "With these types, you're more likely to get razor burn or ingrown hairs because the extra blades pull the hairs below the skin a little too deep."

A moisturizing shaving gel is key to providing a barrier of protection while shaving, so slather that on. Shave in the shower or immediately afterwords, as Cheung states that "the facial hairs are much softer from the warm water and steam." Plus, it eliminates having to clean up a dirty sink when you've got company. It is always a great idea to invest in quality razor that can literally last a lifetime. Choose it wisely and make sure it fits your skin sensitivity and beard coarseness

3. Make after-shave your new best friend. "After-shave hydrates and soothes the skin; it also seals in the skin after a nice shave," says Cheung. "Your after-shave should be alcohol-free because alcohol dries your skin -- plain and simple."

4. Don't skip the facial moisturizer. Facial hair can be sexy on a guy, but what really turns us ladies on is when our faces touch and it doesn't feel like sandpaper. Moisturizing daily will get you soft, kissable skin. "Fragrance-free products are easy because they have no smell and aren't considered 'girly,'" says Dr. Wechsler. "Cetaphil is a good moisturizer option. And Clinique for Men is actually the same as the original Clinique products -- it's just in a grey bottle."

~THIS WEEKEND - FRIDAY AND SATURDAY~
A FUN FATHER'S DAY GIFT!

Hailing from Queens, New York, Dougie Almeida spent most of his adult life as a corporate presenter for one of the largest financial planning firms in the country.  His specialty was taking lifeless insurance presentations and transforming them into works of comic art.  In his spare time, he fought as an ISKA Heavyweight Muay Thai Kick boxer, retiring at 10-0 and earning the title "Always Dangerous".  So, what do you get when you cross an inventive corporate executive with a retired kick boxer?  A stand-up comedian, of course! Winner of Improv's New Faces of Comedy, Miami's Comedy Idol, participant in Laughing Skull Comedy Festival, Gilda's Laugh Fest, Cleveland Comedy Festival, Cape May Comedy Festival and the World Series of Comedy.

Shawn Banks was born in Alton, IL, a small city 20 minutes from St. Louis across the Mississippi River. Known for witty observations and dead-on impersonations of many, Shawn has been exploding in comedy clubs and theatres across Florida and can often be seen performing at Hollywood's Laugh Factory, Comedy Store and Comedy Union.

Shawn's most recognizable asset when he takes the stage is his presence. At 6'3" and 300+ pounds, you can definitely tell that the ELEPHANT IS IN THE ROOM. In the Fall of 2005 & 2006, Shawn took his Family-Fun humor and auditioned and landed a Stand-Up spot on the "Tom Joyner Sky Show" at the WALT-DISNEY Milk-House in front of 4000+ people live and aired on TV One. The show is also heard by over 10-million listeners across the country daily. Shawn enjoys and has great pride in his versatility of being able to perform both mainstream and urban audiences, as well as clean corporate humor.

FLASH VIDEO OF THE WEEK
Coach Jimmy Valvano's 1993 ESPY Speech
This passionate and moving speech was given by Coach Valvano when he accepted the Arthur Ashe Award in 1993 shortly before he passed away from cancer. It's a fantastic speech with incredible 'words to live by' and one that I hope our fathers will enjoy and be inspired by.  It's well worth the 11 minutes and has some comic relief when he talks about his first locker room pep talk as coach!

  RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Father's Day

BEER BATTER FOR FISH, SHRIMP AND/OR VEGGIES

&

Mexican Roasted Corn

BEER BATTER INGREDIENTS

  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 bottle light- or medium-bodied lager (12 ounces), cold
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (spooned and leveled)
  • Coarse salt
  • 5 cups vegetable oil
  • 2 1/2 to 3 pounds shrimp, firm fish fillets (such as cod), or desired vegetables (such as onions or pepperoncini), cut into pieces if necessary
  • 2 cups buttermilk (if using onions)
DIRECTIONS
  1. In a wide 6-quart pot fitted with a deep-fat thermometer, heat oil to 350 degrees over medium-high. Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, whisk together flour, 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, and baking powder. Slowly add beer and whisk batter until smooth. Line a baking sheet with paper towels and place near stove.
  2. Pat fish and/or veggies dry with paper towels and season lightly with salt. In two batches, dip fish into batter (gently shaking off excess) and place in oil. Fry fish, turning occasionally, until deep golden brown and crisp, about 7 minutes per batch (adjust heat as necessary to maintain 350 degrees throughout frying).
  3. With a slotted spoon or mesh strainer, transfer to prepared sheet to drain. Serve fish with lemon wedges and tartar sauce and veggies with a horseradish mustard sauce.

SCENE AROUND TOWN
In 2013, Vero Beach Power Squadron (VBPS) members donated 13,575 hours and over $10,000 to activities that benefit all citizens of Indian River County. These activities include the Youth Sailing Foundation,  Boat Safety Exams, Boating Education, Lagoon Cleanup, Environmental Learning Center Support, Sheriff's Courtesy Marine Patrol, Cooperative Charting, Boating Safety, Boys and Girls Club Outings and others.  13,575 hours is the equivalent of seven full time county workers. If a monetary value is placed on this, it's over $400,000.

The photos were taken last month as VBPS volunteers took the youth from the Boys and Girls Club out fishing for the day.  Just one of the many volunteer activities of the VBPS.
