A New Year... A clean slate... Challenges... Opportunities! Wow! So much to look forward to! What is it that you want to accomplish in 2014? Remember that anything worth having is worth working for. So, after you decide what it is you would like to change or achieve during the next 365 days...design a plan to get you there. Setting goals is important. So important that without them little is ever achieved and we become a bit lazy and content with status quo. Being happy where we are in life is important, but wanting to improve ourselves or our situation is of paramount importance! Without ambition life turns empty. Even though many resolutions are tattered and torn by the end of the year, it is important to have the desire to do better. If you don't like New Year resolutions...no problem! Don't call it that. Instead set goals! When I think of 'goals' I think of 'Gold'. Just always have! They are just too closely similar. And I actually like connecting the two words because pursuing a goal is like going on a gold excavation and achieving your goal is like finding GOLD! So FLASHERS... Let's hunt some gold this year! Be enthusiastic! Work hard! Be relentless! Sweat a little! Don't get discouraged! Don't give up! and Get excited! Remember the excitement that comes from discovering a tiny spec of gold and celebrate the minimal achievements you make along the way! Enjoy the process and may we never be completely satisfied to the extent that we never want to improve something! Happy Gold Rush FLASHERS!!! and HAPPY 2014!!!
The first Positive Person of 2014 is Bryan Stork, center for Florida State University's football team and Vero Beach native. He is a senior working towards a degree in sociology and a 5th year player, starting on the team for the past 3 years. Bryan was recently awarded the 2013 Rimington Trophy, which is given to the nation's most outstanding center. He also made the AP All American first-team selection. While living in Vero, Bryan attended Vero Beach High School, playing as a tight end before going to FSU. Since then he has proven to be an invaluable part of the Seminoles' team. He is FSU's most consistent and versatile lineman, being able to play not only center, but guard and tackle as well. Bryan has helped incoming freshmen 'learn the ropes' of college football and teammates say that he is thought of as a second coach to some of them, just a bit nicer. Bryan serves as a role model for newer players and has been a great leader for the team. With Stork helping lead the way, FSU has become 1st in the ACC and will be playing Auburn at the BCS Championship game this Monday, January 6th. Keep doing us proud Bryan and good luck on Monday!
ACCEPT THE CHALLENGE!
GET HEALTHY IN 2014
Chances are we have quite a few FLASHERS who have resolved to lose weight in the year ahead. Here is a link to a list of healthy things you can substitute for the not so healthy ingredients. Some might seem quite strange, but you might want to try it before you opt out. The applesauce for butter is one that I have personally tried and the obvious difference was the texture..not the taste. Wasn't bad!
iPhone photographers may find Afterlight hard to put down. The app allows users to do the basics, like crop and rotate photos, but it also has an expansive collection of filters, borders and textures to turn your iPhone photo into an iPhone masterpiece. Of course, the app also allows users to share the edited photos to their social media accounts.
Apple selected Duolingo as the company's top iPhone app of the year -- and it's pretty clear why. Duolingo helps users learn a new language from their iPhones with both visual and verbal lessons. Learners are rewarded with experience points, which they can use to buy perks within the app. Perhaps the best part: it's free. Right now the app offers five languages, including Spanish, German, French, Portuguese and Italian.

Bill Proctor leads a Bible study, "Jesus in Exodus," every Sunday morning, 9:00-9:50 a.m. at St. Paul's Church in the Surf Club at 4700 Hwy A1A (the study meets in the café upstairs). The topic for this coming Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, will focus on a possible link between the 9th Plague of Darkness in Exodus 10:21-29 and the Star of Bethlehem - the subject of Proctor's latest e-book, THE RETURN OF THE STAR OF BETHLEHEM: A Message for the 21st Century. Proctor - the author of more than 90 books including several international bestsellers and a number on the Christian faith - has been teaching weekly Bible studies for more than 30 years in a variety of churches in New York City, Vero Beach, and elsewhere. For more information about the study and St. Paul's, call

The importance of proper exfoliation can't be stressed. When the skin is properly exfoliated products penetrate into the skin better. When the other layer of the skin (dead skin cells) is left too thick, products that are applied to the skin cannot penetrate very well. Facials to exfoliate, nourish, deep clean and hydrate the skin can be done with fruit enzymes, glycolic & salicylic peels or microdermabrasion. These exfoliators are the key to helping your products do their job to nourish and moisturize you skin. Monthly facials are one of the best anti-aging tools in our skincare tool box.

POSTAL RATES GOING UP!
Better buy your forever stamps before January 26th! That's when the cost of a First Class postage stamp will go to 49 cents. The 3 cent increase will allow the Postal Service to recoup $2.8 billion in recent losses. Bulk mail, periodicals and package service rates will rise 6 percent. Supposedly, The higher rate will last no more than two years.
(Hmmm?? Does anyone remember when the Government ever reduced the cost of anything?)
DID YOU KNOW?
SEAGULLS MATE FOR LIFE!
Watching seagulls is a favorite pastime on our beaches, and these facts should make it even more fun! Each male claims his own territory in the colony in the spring. He is monogamous and will only find another mate if the old one has died. The pairs settle down to building round nests of grass, seaweed and other plant matter. The female lays 2 or 3 eggs and the incubation period is about a month. Both parents take turns sitting on the eggs and feeding the newborns. A seagull's vision is even better than a human's and is used to spot food as he hovers in the air. Their intelligence is best demonstrated by their developed feeding methods, like dropping clams onto hard rock surfaces to break them open. They are 'sneaky' little birds who will often steal food from other creatures, - even the much larger pelicans!

SCENE AROUND TOWN
A 2013 Kwanzaa celebration kindled joy and inspiration at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Vero Beach as its Social Justice Committee presented a second yearly celebration of the holiday, created nearly a half-century ago by and for African American communities. The after-church potluck luncheon on December 29 enticed some 60 UUs to come together for good food, good conversation and good fun. Pictured above are event co-chairs, R

Simply Beautiful: Photographs from National Geographic September 28, 2013 - January 5, 2014 Supporting Sponsors: Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Evans and Mr. and Mrs. Henry G. Stifel Simply Beautiful: Photographs from National Geographic will take visitors on a visual journey through variations on the universal theme of beauty. Featuring the work of some of the most famous National Geographic photographers, the exhibition includes remarkable images from the Society's core mission areas: exploration, wildlife, cultures, science, and nature. The more than 50 images in the exhibition plumb the depth of National Geographic's image collection to highlight the loveliest and most appealing photographs from this impressive archive. The result is an experience of visual delight, centering on stunning landscapes and quaint locales. The exhibition makes one ponder what creates beauty in a photograph, and illustrates the power of these images to "lift us out of a jaded world and make us gasp." Simply Beautiful was assembled by award-winning National Geographic photographer Annie Griffiths, who wrote in the book that accompanies the show: "Photographs have given us visual proof that the world is grander than we imagined, that there is beauty, often overlooked, in nearly everything."

Instead of treating our water sources with care, we've allowed them to become polluted with toxic chemicals and agricultural and industrial waste. The exhibition makes one ponder what creates beauty in a photograph, and illustrates the power of these images to "lift us out of a jaded world and make us gasp."
