editor's note poka-dot

Happy Thursday Flashers,

For the next week, I'll be singing Willie Nelson's song On The Road Again. I'm leaving this afternoon to drive to Atlanta to celebrate my daughter Allison's 23rd birthday. (Since I still feel 23 myself, I don't know how I can possibly  have a daughter that old!) Following that, I will drive on down to Macon to celebrate a college reunion with my Chi Omega sorority sisters.

I'm really looking forward to it, but I'll hate to miss everything that's going on here this weekend. We tried to go to the first Polo Match last Sunday, but it was cancelled because the field was wet. So, make sure you follow the instructions in the post below and call before heading out. Sebastian will be holding its annual Fine Art Show and Music Festival this weekend. After you find a couple of one-of-a-kind artist creations head west to Fellsmere for the Frog Leg Festival. Don't forget about the Farmers Market on Ocean Drive on Saturday. You can pick up some fresh fruits and vegetables to help you stay on course with your New Year Resolution to get healthy! Jazz at noon at the Yacht Club, Miss Saigon and Cows Don't Fly at Riverside, The Celebrated Speaker Series at Emerson and on and on...There is just no reason to be bored. Lastly... Take a break from all the fun and do a good deed!  Drop candy and/or a card off for our soldiers' Valentine packages by the January 24th deadline. (See the Military Moms email below.) Have a great weekend FLASHERS, stay warm, have fun, and enjoy all that our wonderful community has to offer!

HEY FLASHERS...SHOW SOME LOVE
FOR OUR FREEDOM DEFENDERS
Bring chairs, picnic, and a radio on which to hear the announcer. That will ensure that you enjoy the exciting play by play as the horses and riders come thundering past your field-side tailgate space. Dress casually and for the weather....there are often "polo winds" across the field. Flat shoes are recommended for the 'divot stomping' at half time! Call (772) 778-2224 after 10 a.m. on Sunday to alert you to a cancellation. If you don't want to rush to get a tailgate space you can always reserve one ahead for $50 and that would include up to 6 people in the total cost.....just call 778-2224 Monday through Friday.

FLASH BEAUTY TIP OF THE WEEK

Sponsored by: Center for Facial Aesthetics      banner beauty tip

EXFOLIATION EXFOLIATION EXFOLIATION!

The importance of proper exfoliation can't be stressed. When the skin is properly exfoliated products penetrate into the skin better.  When the other layer of the skin (dead skin cells) is left too thick, products that are applied to the skin cannot penetrate very well. Facials to exfoliate, nourish, deep clean and hydrate the skin can be done with fruit enzymes, glycolic & salicylic peels or microdermabrasion.  These exfoliators are the key to helping your products do their job to nourish and moisturize you skin.  Monthly facials are one of the best anti-aging tools in our skincare tool box.

HEALTH TIP

SHOULD YOU TAKE VITAMINS AND SUPPLEMENTS

By now you probably know that the best way to get your vitamins is by eating a balanced diet. However, many of us don't eat correctly and take vitamins and/or supplements without checking potential side effects. There is so much misinformation on the internet, FLASH went to the best source, - the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA has a website that fully explains the use and potential dangers of vitamins and supplements and how they can affect certain prescription medications. The article was written primarily for older adults, but it is good information for everyone. You can also scroll down to a printable chart that you can fill in to take to your health provider to be certain that what you are taking is safe. For example: Taking more than 100% of the Daily Value (DV) of certain vitamins and minerals, such as Vitamin A, vitamin D, and iron may actually harm your health. This type of 'overdose' can occur when you take supplements in addition to your regular diet that may include food sources like vitamin-fortified cereals and drinks.  To learn more, Click here.

  DID YOU KNOW?

A LITTLE KNOWN FACT ABOUT

MARTIN LUTHER KING

The civil rights leader was born Michael King Jr. on January 15, 1929. In 1934, however, his father, a pastor at Atlanta's Ebenezer Baptist Church, traveled to Germany and became inspired by the Protestant Reformation leader Martin Luther. As a result, King Sr. changed his own name as well as that of his 5-year-old son.

  RECIPE OF THE WEEK

QUICK AND EASY FETTUCINI WITH MUSHROOM-CLAM SAUCE

My sister Wendy contributed this quick-fix recipe to our family cookbook several years ago. It's great for those 'last minute' dinners because most of the ingredients can be kept on hand in your pantry.

INGREDIENTS

2  6 1/2 oz. cans chopped clams

1 Tbsp. butter

2 garlic cloves, minced

1/4 cup Chablis or other dry white wine

1 can mushroom soup

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

8 oz. package fettuccine, cooked

Chopped parsley for garnish

DIRECTIONS

Drain clams, reserving liquid. Melt butter in a 2 quart saucepan and cook garlic over medium heat, stirring often.

Add clam liquid and wine. Boil 6 minutes or until liquid is reduced to about 1/2 cup.

Stir in soup, clams and cheese. Reduce and heat about 3 minutes.

Serve over cooked fettuccine (or linguini) and garnish with parsley.

The Salvation of IRC received $103,255 in Red Kettle donations this past Christmas season. It's the 5th year in a row of going over $100,000! The pocket change from the community made the difference. The generosity of Indian River County came through during a tough economic time to help The Army "Do The Most Good" this holiday season. The Red Kettle Campaign is the major fund-raiser for The Salvation Army and helps to support all our programs for the entire 2014 year.

Stifel Simply Beautiful: Photographs from National Geographic will take visitors on a visual journey through variations on the universal theme of beauty. Featuring the work of some of the most famous National Geographic photographers, the exhibition includes remarkable images from the Society's core mission areas: exploration, wildlife, cultures, science, and nature. The more than 50 images in the exhibition plumb the depth of National Geographic's image collection to highlight the loveliest and most appealing photographs from this impressive archive. The result is an experience of visual delight, centering on stunning landscapes and quaint locales. The exhibition makes one ponder what creates beauty in a photograph, and illustrates the power of these images to "lift us out of a jaded world and make us gasp." Simply Beautiful was assembled by award-winning National Geographic photographer Annie Griffiths, who wrote in the book that accompanies the show: "Photographs have given us visual proof that the world is grander than we imagined, that there is beauty, often overlooked, in nearly everything."
