editor's note poka-dotHello FLASHERS~

I hope you are all having a wonderful week and gearing up for a great weekend.  I just returned to town last night after spending 5 days in Georgia.  I went up for my college roommate's initiation into our college sorority; Chi Omega. Say what? You read that correctly. We held a special initiation for Risa Jane.

Have you ever had someone come into your life and serve as a tremendous inspiration? If you haven't I will happily and eagerly share Risa Jane with you.  Over the 30 plus years since graduating from college, my old roommate and I have had sporadic bouts of closeness. We were in each other's wedding, but soon life took over and during those early years of parenthood, time seemed scarce and phone calls, visits and letters didn't work their way into our daily lives. It was pretty much the yearly Christmas card that served as that magical thread keeping us connected. Now that our children are older and 'out of the house', some spare time has crept back in and brought us together again...and I am so glad!

Nine years ago Risa contracted a virus that attacked her heart. After being a healthy athlete her entire life, she got to the point where she could hardly do anything at all. She ultimately found herself on a transplant list for 23 months and at times it looked like a donor match would not come in time. That wait period is one which no words can describe. It seemed so strange for Risa to be in that situation. She had always been healthy! She played basketball for Ole Miss and transferred to Mercer where she played for a year, before transferring back to Ole Miss...which is why she was never initiated. Since her transplant she has participated in the Transplant Olympics and has successfully medalled repeatedly in numerous sports! This past July Risa had a Cerebral Aneurysm and spent three weeks on a ventilator fighting once again for her life in ICU... And quite a fighter she is! After getting out of ICU and being transferred to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Risa spent months in intensive ...and I do mean INTENSE rehab. I visited in August and was amazed at how far she had already come.  I was scheduled to 'take a shift' and stay with her for three days in November. However, she progressed quicker than anticipated and headed home to Saint Simons Island a few weeks early. She continues with therapy three days a week and already is posting that she will be at this year's Transplant Olympics in March.

I loved being back with my old roommate. Experiencing initiation again and spending time with friends who played such a role in my life was an unusual and treasured treat! My wish for 2014 is that each FLASHER will have a 'Risa Jane' in their life who will serve as an awe inspiring example of what can be accomplished with a big dose of positive attitude that says... I WILL NEVER GIVE UP!

 CONFUSED BY MOVIE RATINGS?

If you're as confused as we are by the standards used for movie ratings today, you might want to check out the rules of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) which is responsible for these ratings. If you think the ratings are becoming more liberal, you're probably right. The rules for a PG (Parental Guidance) might surprise you: - "There may be some profanity and some depictions of violence or brief nudity.  - but drug use in a movie must have a PG-13 or higher rating.  A recent example was experienced by one of our Flashers. She took her children to see Will Ferrell's Anchorman 2  (PG-13) and was surprised at the content, which included smoking crack.  She should have checked out a review first which describes it as  "Crude with sexual content, drug use, language and comic violence." Change Out Your Faucet

You can give a punch of fun, elegance, or trendiness by simply updating a faucet that you use on a daily basis. This simple transformation is something that will make you smile inwardly every time you wash up. If you haven't checked lately, you will be amazed at the variety and faucet choice today. You can find motion activated faucets, LED water lighting according to temperature and even faucets with a screen that allows you to access your email. That's too much if I do say so myself. In selecting your faucet make sure that you take notice of the number of openings in your countertop and the distance between them. This will be a determining factor in your selection. Otherwise, you might be replacing more than your faucet.

  FLASH VIDEO OF THE WEEK
This video is in sync with the message in my editor's note. Look and find inspiration in others. This song has been nominated for an Oscar this year. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has nominated "Alone Yet Not Alone" for best original song, taking everyone by surprise, including its singer, Joni and Friends Founder and CEO, Joni Eareckson Tada. The film is set in the mid-1700s and based on a true story, Alone Yet Not Alone depicts a family fleeing religious persecution in Germany to America.  The lyrics captured the heart of Tada."I really resonated with the words - after all, I sit down in a stand-up world and often feel 'alone;' but of course with my faith in God, I'm never really alone! The Bible is filled with stories of God picking ill-equipped, unskilled people for places of great influence - that's how I feel, me, a quadriplegic, singing an Academy Award nominated song." CREATIVE USES FOR VINTA GE ASHTRAYS

Good for all of you who quit smoking! - But think twice before you put all those ashtrays in the garage sale. They can come in handy for lots of things. Here are just a few:

1.  Potpourri Holders

Fill-up deeper ashtrays with either store-bought or homemade potpourri  and set them around your home in various places.

2. Spoon Rests

Use them as spoon rests in the kitchen. The indentations along the sides that are meant to cradle cigarettes are perfect places for your spoon handles instead.

3. Doodad Keepers

Place an ashtray on a bathroom shelf, beside the kitchen sink, on your desk, or your nightstand - anywhere you can use a container for your doodads. Old ashtrays can hold a variety of small items like jewelry, paper clips, buttons, screws, pins and other trinkets.

4. Soap Dishes

Use old ashtrays as soap dishes in your bathroom or kitchen.

5. Coasters

Some round ashtrays are the perfect size for coasters in your living room.

6. Candle Holders

Small ashtrays can be just right to hold those little scented warmer candles.

7. Seed Starters

Put them in your kitchen window. A few deeper ones can be perfect for an herb garden.

8. Key Keeper

Put a pretty one on a table by the front door and you may never lose your keys again!

Stifel Simply Beautiful: Photographs from National Geographic will take visitors on a visual journey through variations on the universal theme of beauty. Featuring the work of some of the most famous National Geographic photographers, the exhibition includes remarkable images from the Society's core mission areas: exploration, wildlife, cultures, science, and nature. The more than 50 images in the exhibition plumb the depth of National Geographic's image collection to highlight the loveliest and most appealing photographs from this impressive archive. The result is an experience of visual delight, centering on stunning landscapes and quaint locales. The exhibition makes one ponder what creates beauty in a photograph, and illustrates the power of these images to "lift us out of a jaded world and make us gasp." Simply Beautiful was assembled by award-winning National Geographic photographer Annie Griffiths, who wrote in the book that accompanies the show: "Photographs have given us visual proof that the world is grander than we imagined, that there is beauty, often overlooked, in nearly everything."

Following the death of her husband in 2002, she created two series of wood folding screens titled "Contemporary Mythologies" and "Subjective Mythologies," each combining representational illusion with penetrating emotion. Borrowing from the design principles of Asian folding screens, Kennington painted both sides of each screen as complementary halves of a single idea. Simply Beautiful: Photographs from National Geographic September 28, 2013 - January 5, 2014 Supporting Sponsors: Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Evans and Mr. and Mrs. Henry G.

Borrowing from the design principles of Asian folding screens, Kennington painted both sides of each screen as complementary halves of a single idea. These unique works of art by one of the South's most prominent female artists will make a lasting impression.
