HAPPY SUPER BOWL XLVIII !
Even if you aren't a football fan, it's always fun to attend (or even host) a Super Bowl Party because of the fun food and the clever commercials folks will be talking about around the water cooler on Monday...unless the game is postponed until Monday, - or Tuesday, - or whenever! The blizzard conditions that have covered the Northeast are presenting a real challenge to Sunday's game in New Jersey. We hope everything will work out as planned because the thousands who plan to attend may not have the luxury of changing their plane tickets and work schedules at the last minute. Isn't it great to be in Vero where we can gather with friends around the TV and not have to worry about a lot of that 'white stuff' outside! If you're planning to host a Super Bowl Party, you'll find some tips in our posts this week, as well as the schedule for the game. Not into the Superbowl? What about groundhogs? Sunday is Groundhog Day as well. Shadow or no shadow?...That is the question. With the arrival of the pesky polar vortex, many of us are more than aware that we are in the grips of a horrible winter season. Is the worst over or are we going to have to put up with several more weeks of the same? That's the question we turn to our furry friend to answer. Punxsutawney Phil, the famous weather-predicting groundhog. Groundhog's Day, occurs on the 2nd of February each year, originated from a tradition that holds that the groundhog and hibernating animals like it can correctly guess whether or not there will be an early spring. Legend has it that if the animal emerges and sees its shadow, we are in store for six more weeks of bad weather. It it doesn't see its shadow, there will be an early spring! Groundhogs and a Superbowl game aren't the only things going on this weekend. Check out all of the fun events coming up in our posts and calendar below. Enjoy your weekend FLASHERS!

THERE IS STILL TIME TO RSVP FOR
TONIGHT'S WORKSHOP
|
Super Bowl XLVIII will be played this Sunday, February 2, 2014 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ., just across the Hudson River from New York City. Because of its proximity to the 'Big Apple', New Jersey folks are concerned that New York will reap a lot of the financial benefits for hotels and restaurants that would ordinarily go to the host city. New York has even designated a portion of Broadway near Times Square as Super Bowl Boulevard with special attractions to encourage tourists to come there. For those of us who will be watching at home, here is the schedule:
When: Sunday, Feb. 2 at 6:25 p.m. ET
Who: Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks
Where: MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, N.J.
Watch: Fox Network
Halftime Performers: Bruno Mars with special guests Red Hot Chili Peppers

SHOW YOUR SUPER BOWL COLORS
If you're planning a Super Bowl Party, even if it's just your own family, it might be fun to add a little color to the event, by decorating your table in your favorite team's colors. You can do this by using paper or plastic cups and plates in the colors of your choice. A sheet of artificial turf from your local home improvement store makes an appropriate table cloth. Experiment with a little food coloring in your drinks, sauces and food. Need examples? It's easy to change mayonnaise or dips into a different color with a little food coloring. A layer cake can also be colored with a food coloring: cake in one color and icing in another. Decorate cookies with M&Ms in the appropriate color.
This year, both teams share the color blue:
The colors for the Denver Broncos are orange and blue.
The colors for the Seattle Seahawks are green and blue.
Here are some other fun links to help you score big as the ultimate Super Bowl host/hostess!

The "Squares Sheet," is a simple and fun way that has emerged as an engaging alternative. It's just meant to be fun and calls on pure luck to turn any one of your guests into the Superbowl winner! Equal odds for all...even the kids if you want to bring them into the game. You can click here for game instructions and here to print the Super Bowl Pool Square.

HAPPY 30TH BIRTHDAY TO A FAMOUS SUPER BOWL COMMERCIAL!
Thirty years ago during the Super Bowl of 1984, an Apple Computer commercial announced a product that would change the future, - the Macintosh personal computer. It was filmed as a take-off on George Orwell's "big brother" book and movie titled "1984". You learn nothing about the product being discussed other than the fact that it is a computer and
will be available for purchase on January 24th, 1984, and that somehow, it is going to pretty much change everything. It certainly did, didn't it? To view it, Click here.

FLASH BEAUTY TIP OF THE WEEK
Sponsored by: Center for Facial Aesthetics
Most of us have very oily eyelids and that makes it hard to keep eyeliner and mascara in one place. Our natural oils can make them transfer all over the eye area. To prevent that problem, apply a matte skin tone eye shadow or an eyelid primer right underneath your bottom eyeliner and across your eyelid. You'll see that eyeliner/mascara won't transfer on your creases or fine lines. For more makeup tips come in and see Giselle for an updated look or free application lesson! A perfect 'Spruce Me Up' in time for Valentine's Day!

NEW DRIVER LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
Before you set out to renew your driver's license, or if you're taking your 15 year old for a Learners Permit, make sure you're up-to-date on what paperwork you may need to take with you. In this age of identity theft, the rules changed in 2010 and you may have to take at least 3 and possibly 4 documents with you to prove that 'you' are 'you,' and your old license is not one of them! They are original Proof of Identity, original Proof of your Social Security number, two different Proofs of your Residential Address, and Proof of Name Change if that applies. For possible documents that satisfy these requirements, Click Here.

DID YOU KNOW?
During the process of becoming a butterfly the entire caterpillar breaks down into a liquid?
The Monarch butterfly's numbers are dwindling once again this year and the migration may disappear. Because the monarchs cluster during the migration, researchers measure the acreage that they cover rather than actually counting the butterflies. There was a 59% decrease last year from 7.14 acres to 2.9. That figure was down from 22 acres during the 1990's. Learn more by clicking here.

SUPERBOWL RECIPE OF THE WEEK
Jalapeos popper dip
- Ingredients:
- 2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, room temp
- 1 cup mayonnaise
- 1 cup shredded Mexican blend cheese (half Jack, half cheddar cheese)
- 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese
- 1 (4 ounce) can chopped green chilies
- 1 (4 ounce) can sliced jalapenos - double if you like heat
- 1 cup panko bread crumbs
- 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese
- 1/2 stick butter, melted
Preparation:
In a large bowl, beat the first six ingredients until blended; spread into an ungreased 9-in. pie plate. Mix bread crumbs, parmesan cheese and melted butter and sprinkle on top of the cheese mixture. Bake at 400 for 20-25 minutes or until lightly browned.
You want the top to get browned and the dip to be heated through and bubble gently on the edges.
Do not over cook this dish or the mayonnaise will separate and you will have a grease puddle in your dip. Serve with Buttery crackers or a sliced French baguette.

A "Rah Rah" Party, hosted by the Dancing with Vero's Stars committee, and sponsored by Vero Beach Hotel & Spa was recently held for the ten star dancers and instructors. The date for the sixth season for Dancing with Vero's Stars will take place on the evening of Saturday, May 10. While it is several months away, the tickets are a hot commodity now. Dale Kennington, Exposure (recto), 2005 - 2007, oil on wood panel (six panels), 94 x 144 in. fully extended, each panel 94 x 24 in. Dale Kennington: Mythologies January 25 - May 4, 2014 Dale Kennington's paintings engage viewers both intellectually and emotionally. Following the death of her husband in 2002, she created two series of wood folding screens titled "Contemporary Mythologies" and "Subjective Mythologies," each combining representational illusion with penetrating emotion. Borrowing from the design principles of Asian folding screens, Kennington painted both sides of each screen as complementary halves of a single idea. These unique works of art by one of the South's most prominent female artists will make a lasting impression.

Unitarian Universalist Fellowship - 1590 27th Avenue, Vero Beach FL
Fracking is happening all across America. Rural landowners wake up one day to find a lucrative offer from an energy company wanting to lease their property. Reason? The company hopes to tap into a reservoir dubbed the "Saudi Arabia of natural gas." Halliburton developed a hydraulic drilling process called "fracking" to extract the natural gas, and suddenly America finds itself on the precipice of becoming an energy superpower. So what's the problem? Fracking uses huge amounts of fresh water and huge amounts of toxic chemicals. Fracking also causes seismic activity, pollutes groundwater, and leaks methane, a potent greenhouse gas. The course discusses clinical treatment(s) of illnesses: (Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective Disorder, Major Depression, PTSD, Panic Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and co-occurring brain disorders and addiction) It also teaches knowledge and skills that family members need in order to cope more effectively. The two teachers who will be teaching the course have been doing it for ten years and are passionate about their work because each of them has a son with Schizophrenia, thus they both have needed all the help they can get. Registrations are a must so please call Valerie at 532-5554 or Beverly at 257-5950.
