editor's note poka-dot"CHICAGO IS MY KIND OF TOWN"

I believe it was Frank Sinatra who sang the above phrase, and today I am flying to the "windy city" to see if it's 'my kind of town'. Our family visited  there when I was a child, because it had been my Dad's childhood hometown. (I remember very little about it, but my Mom tells me they almost lost me in the enormous Fields Museum!) I will be joining my daughter Allie who is there for training for her new job. This weekend, weather permitting, we hope to take in a play, do a little sightseeing and a little shopping. I had planned on tailgating at the Vero Polo match this weekend and I'll be missing some of the other fun events going on as well. So, I hope many of you will check out our community calendar below and will email me with some pictures. You might just find yourself in next week's FLASH. As I write this, more snow is expected in Chicago tonight, a tad different from the near balmy weather we are experiencing this week. Our poor northern friends are really having a tough winter! I'll be back in time to get out our special Valentine issue. Meanwhile, if you haven't already received one, you can pick up one of our free event calendars for February at several local spots, including the following:

All Thru The House, Beauty on the Beach, Blue Ribbon Boarding and Grooming, Brackett Library, Brain Freeze, Many Churches, County Rec Center, Cuts and Such, Dockside Grill, Duncan Donuts (Miracle Mile, SR-60 & Sebastian), Einstein Bagels, Indian River Mall, Main Library, Marks at the Pointe, Mr. Manatees, Mulligans, Lobster Shanty,  Many Medical and Dental offices throughout the county,  Ocean Grill, Pizoodles, Radiance by Shannon, Starbucks on US-1, Toojays, Vero Beach Marina, Waldo's, Waves and more!

TODAY IS THE BEGINNING AND THE ENDING!
(What not to miss on TV)
THE BEGINNING
- Today is the kick off of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics! Eighty-eight countries are sending their Crème de la Crème to compete in the games.

Although the opening ceremonies will not take place until Friday, February 7th, NBC will begin its primetime coverage at 8p.m. tonight. Here's what you need to know if you don't want to miss a thing: the Olympic website isNBCOlympics.com, and coverage will take place on NBC Sports Network, MSNBC, and CNBC. You can find the local television listings by clicking here.

The Olympic Opening Ceremony will take place on February 7, 2014, and coverage will be provided by NBC's Matt Lauer and Meredith Vieira starting at 7:30p.m. until 11:30 p.m. There will be a 9-hour tape delay.

THE ENDING OF AN ERA

Tonight will be the last time that Jay Leno takes the stage as the host of the Tonight Show. "Tonight" was No. 1 among viewers when Leno took it over from Johnny Carson in 1992 and it will be when he hands it off to Jimmy Fallon. Leno will have taped more shows than any predecessor, Carson included, with the 4,610th finale. Leno's final show will feature Billy Crystal, his first "Tonight" guest, and Garth Brooks. Late Night with Jimmy Fallon will debut on February 17th. Fallon will be moving the show from its longtime Burbank home to its New York birthplace.

               A CLASS ACT

Yes, the Denver Broncos suffered a dismal loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl game, but we still think Peyton Manning is "super." Walking to the locker room after the game, it's reported that some young fans asked him for autographs. He said that if they would wait 'til he changed clothes and came back, he would do it then. He did return and gave autographs to them all. (Probably the thing he felt least like doing, but what a role model!) It will be five years after he finally retires before he will even be eligible for the Hall Of Fame. When that time comes, we hope the judges will remember all of his other successes and  vote him in on the first ballot, - just as they did for Manning's boss, Broncos vice president of football operations John Elway, who suffered an even more dramatic defeat (55-10) in Super Bowl XXIV.

FLASH BEAUTY TIP OF THE WEEK

Sponsored by: Center for Facial Aesthetics      banner beauty tip

GET A CLEAN START

When was the last time you cleaned your make-up brushes? Hopefully not too long ago! It's very important that you do because your brushes can carry a lot of bacteria. It could lead to break outs and clogged pores! Plus a clean make-up brush applies better than a dirty one. I'd recommend cleaning foundation and face powder brushes weekly if you use them just about every day. For eye make-up brushes I would clean them every other week. Using a gentle hair shampoo or a good brush cleaner would be best. You could use gentle, light, hair conditioner to help keep your makeup brushes nice and soft.

WORST PASSWORDS

Websites are starting to enforce stronger password policies in order to stop hackers. So how can you try to protect yourself? While passwords are never completely immune from hackers, the best passwords are long combinations of letters and numbers with random punctuation. Common phrases, words, or short strings of digits are extremely vulnerable, and it's always unwise to use the same password across multiple services and devices. Here are the most common and consequently the worst passwords of 2013 according to the Huffington Post.

  RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Coconut Macaroons

Makes Apx. 30 cookies

Ingredients:

7 3/4 cups (3, 7 oz packages) sweetened flaked coconut
1 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 (14oz) can
Eagle Brand sweetened condensed milk
2/3 cup canned cream of coconut
1 Tablespoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon almond extract
1 egg

6 oz. semi sweet chocolate

Directions:

* Heat oven to 350*F.
* Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
* Sprinkle 1 cup of the coconut onto the prepared baking sheet and bake 5-7 minutes (stir after 3 minutes, then check every minute or so) until golden brown.

* In a large bowl mix toasted coconut, remaining coconut, flour, and salt.

* In another large bowl mix condensed milk, cream of coconut, vanilla, almond extract and egg. Stir together vigorously with a whisk.

* Pour liquid mixture into the bowl of coconut (mixture) and stir until well combined.

* Using a 2 Tablespoon cookie scoop, scoop mixture onto a parchment paper lined baking sheet. Use a moist finger to press down any shreds of coconut that are hanging out (otherwise they will burn before the cookies are fully baked).

* Bake cookies for 12-14 minutes, until golden brown then cool a minute on the baking sheet, then move to a wire rack to continue cooling.

* When the cookies have cooled, melt the chocolate in a small bowl in the microwave (on 50% power). Remove the chocolate from the microwave when almost melted, then stir until the chocolate is fully melted. Dip macaroons in the chocolate and set on a (clean) parchment lined baking sheet. Move to the fridge and allow the chocolate to set up.

Store cookies (covered) at room temperature up to 3 days and give to friends for Valentine's Day!

Following the death of her husband in 2002, she created two series of wood folding screens titled "Contemporary Mythologies" and "Subjective Mythologies," each combining representational illusion with penetrating emotion. Borrowing from the design principles of Asian folding screens, Kennington painted both sides of each screen as complementary halves of a single idea. These unique works of art by one of the South's most prominent female artists will make a lasting impression.

Unitarian Universalist Fellowship - 1590 27th Avenue, Vero Beach FL

Fracking is happening all across America. Rural landowners wake up one day to find a lucrative offer from an energy company wanting to lease their property. Reason? The company hopes to tap into a reservoir dubbed the "Saudi Arabia of natural gas." Halliburton developed a hydraulic drilling process called "fracking" to extract the natural gas, and suddenly America finds itself on the precipice of becoming an energy superpower. So what's the problem? Fracking uses huge amounts of fresh water and huge amounts of toxic chemicals. Fracking also causes seismic activity, pollutes groundwater, and leaks methane, a potent greenhouse gas. When the London committee of The Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade saw the diagram depicting the stowage of human cargo on the Brookes, they quickly acted to transform it for their political ends. Within weeks, a broadside engraving with accompanying text had been delivered to every Member of Parliament and many cultural elites across the land. The image soon became an icon. More than any other product of the abolitionist press, the 'Brookes' became a force for change. In a richly illustrated and dynamic lecture, UVA professor Michael Suarez will describe the circulation and uses of the 'Brookes,' consider relationships between word and image, and discuss the reciprocal interactions between politics and print.
