HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!

The history of Valentine's Day is shrouded in mystery. Presumably, at one time it was known as a pagan fertility festival, but  it was deemed "unChristian" and at the end of the 5th century, Pope Gelasius declared  February 14th to be St. Valentine's Day in honor of the martyr, St. Valentine. It was not until much later that the day became associated with love. Written Valentine's didn't begin to appear until after 1400. The oldest known valentine still in existence today was a poem written in 1415 by Charles, the Duke of Orleans, to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London. It's now part of the manuscript collection of the British Library in London.  Americans probably began exchanging hand-made valentines in the early 1700s. In the 1840s, Esther A. Howland began selling the first mass-produced valentines in America. Howland, known as the "Mother of the Valentine," made elaborate creations with real lace, ribbons and colorful pictures which she called 'scrap'. FLASHERS, with your own 'scrap' and maybe some of  the wonderful scrapbooking materials available today, it's not too late to create a unique and creative special card for your Valentine! You might gather some inspiration from our posts below that will help make this a very special Valentine's Day for your 'Sweetie!'

 LOVE AT ALL TIMES!

The expression of love is something that means so much and can cost nothing more than a little time. Valentine's Day is a wonderful day that reminds us to show love to others. FLASHERS...why not FLASH some love to those who truly need it!  We have wonderful facilities in this community that provide ways to show love to those who might just need it the most.  Here are some ideas:

1)  Check with a local church for names of elderly 'shut-ins'
that can't get out anymore. Stop by with a Valentine
     surprise.
2)  Drop a valentine 'sweet' off at one of the homeless shelters
3)  Become a big brother or big sister or a mentor with Youth
     Guidance.
4)  Stop by a nursing home and take the time to sit and talk to
some of the residents. Their wisdom might make you the
     winner.
5)  Join the Military Moms Prayer group on Thursday evenings
at 5:00 at Christ Church and express some love for those
who give so much of themselves every day for all of us.

6)  While we are discussing the military...Why not make some

special cookies to drop off for the soldiers next Thursday.

Scroll up to the Cookies for Soldiers feature for more

     details.

 CHECKED YOUR CHANGE LATELY?

At a recent Orlando auction for coin collectors, The Brasher Doubloon, the first United States gold coin (1787), auctioned for $4,582,500 this month. The famous coin became even more famous when a Raymond Chandler mystery became a 1947 movie named for the coin. It had been in a private collection since 1979 when it sold for $430,000. Also sold at the convention auction was a 1913 U.S. nickel that brought $3.3 million. If you would like to check the value of old coins you may have, this is a good website. Click here.

WEEKEND PROJECT

Here is some Valentine inspiration. Click on the cards and the fonts for more 'sweet' information. The love sign is simply created with the hands and feet of your loved little one/s. If lettering freehand frightens you...not to worry! Find a font you like and print it. You can trace it onto the board with some old fashioned carbon paper and then simply paint within the lines. Feel the love, FLASHERS!

  TODAY'S CHUCKLE

After she woke up, a woman told her husband, "I just dreamed you gave me a diamond necklace for Valentine's Day. What do you think it means?"

"You'll know tonight," he said.

That evening the husband came home with a small package and gave it to his wife. Delighted, she opened it--to find a book entitled "The Meaning of Dreams."

SCENE AROUND TOWN

"Casting Our Future," the Capital Campaign for the East Wing Expansion Project of the Vero Beach Theatre Guild's building, is in full swing following the final site plan conditional use approval made by the City of Vero Beach.

The $1,000,000 campaign is to be used towards the much needed, behind-the-scenes renovations to improve the working conditions for volunteer cast and crew.  Those improvements include an on-site second floor rehearsal space allowing room for sets and props, even while another show is using the main stage; on-site third floor storage space for costumes and props saving time and money in rental facilities; first floor permanent male dressing room to adjoin a female dressing room. The green rooftop will house a garden terrace for volunteers to enjoy while taking a break.

December found the SunUp ARC Chorus spreading Holiday cheer wherever they went! The smiles (and even tears of joy) from the audience was all anyone could ever ask for during the holiday season. Performing at the various venues helped SunUp enforce their  creed: Mission Statement: SunUp ARC supports and empowers individuals with special needs to achieve their life goals. Vision: SunUp ARC will advocate for full acceptance of individuals with special needs as valued members of our community. SunUp thanks Horizon Bay, The Place, the Republican Woman's Christmas House and Studio Gabriel Salon & Spa for inviting the SunUp ARC Chorus to perform for them. A special thank you to The Place where the residents' encore request was quite special, the Republican Women Aware for making SunUp ARC one of their charities for the Christmas House 2013 and to Gabriel's Spa for their generous donation to the Chorus!

Members of the Military Moms Prayer Group (left to right), Shirley Morgan, Michele Mackett, and Carol Breining, with some of the more than 100 boxes filled with candy, cards and other goodies that the group sent to our deployed troops in the Middle East, Africa, and at sea in time for Valentine's Day.  Donations poured in from individuals and groups throughout the county, including Southern Fulfillment, Christ Church Vero Beach, the Vero Beach Power Squadron, Community Church, I'll Never Tell jewelry, and  Barker Electric Air Conditioning and Heating, which served as the packing venue.  Handfuls of cards made by Indian River County schoolchildren topped off each box. "Soldiers Rock," exclaimed one card, emblazoned with a stick-figure soldier. Through the group's Valentines for Heroes and Holidays for Heroes outreach efforts, an estimated 12,500 packages have be
en sent to the
troops from Indian River County since
 2006.

Sharon Morgan is flanked by two of her acrylic paintings or "mandalas"  -- symbolic works that capture the spirit of the 20th century, decade-by-decade.   On the left is her 1950's mandala, "Rockin' in the 'burbs."  On the right is the "Dawn of Aquarius," with Morgan's vision of the 1960's

If you're a connoisseur of art and history, you won't want to miss artist Sharon Morgan's award-winning series of ten circular paintings or "mandalas" entitled "A Kaleidoscopic View of the 20th Century," now through March 3 at the Emerson Center's Foyer Gallery of Art.

Each painting in the series, which won a Millennium Cultural Recog- nition Award by the State of Florida in 2000, represents one decade of American history, with iconic images symbolizing the politics, social issues, music and art of the era.  For example, Morgan's 1950's "Rockin' in the 'burbs," pays tribute to rock and roll, statehood for Alaska and Hawaii, The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit, and "The Flying Purple People Eater," along with more sobering realities such as the testing of the H-bomb, the murder of African-American teenager Emmitt Hill, Sputnik, and U.S./Soviet relations.

The Foyer Gallery of Art is free and open to the public Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Salvation Army of Indian River County received a donation of 50 Christmas Hams from Winn Dixie to the Social Services Program that helped provide Christmas meals' to at risk residents in Indian River County this past Holiday.  The Salvation Army of IRC has been providing Christmas Assistance since 1987 to help fill a void in our community.

Presidential Service Award certificates  in  the  Bronze  Category  went  to  49 volunteers,  who  volunteered between 100 and 249 hours in 2013. Twenty-five  volunteers  received  the  Silver Award,  with 250 - 500  volunteer  hours and 5 volunteers were honored with the Gold Award having volunteered 500 or more hours.

The corn stalks may be dried and brown now, but they produced a nice check to the tune of $1000 to the Buggy Bunch while they were thriving and green! Pictured here is Cheryl Roseland of Countryside Citrus presenting a check to Kelly Sartain of The Buggy Bunch in what is left of the corn field. The funds represent proceeds from Countryside Citrus' inaugural corn maze that provided family fun last November. Already looking forward to the 2014 maze!

Vero Beach Museum of Art - 3001 Riverside Park Drive, Vero Beach FL 33163

The Print that Changed the World: The Description of the Slave-Ship Brookes Michael F. Suarez, S.J. Director, Rare Book School University of Virginia Individual Tickets: $35 ($15 Museum Members) Imagine the Brookes: 454 African slaves stowed away on tightly packed wooden platforms and shelves-men allotted a scanty space of 6 feet by 1 foot, 4 inches, and women and children even less. When the London committee of The Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade saw the diagram depicting the stowage of human cargo on the Brookes, they quickly acted to transform it for their political ends. Within weeks, a broadside engraving with accompanying text had been delivered to every Member of Parliament and many cultural elites across the land. The image soon became an icon. More than any other product of the abolitionist press, the 'Brookes' became a force for change. In a richly illustrated and dynamic lecture, UVA professor Michael Suarez will describe the circulation and uses of the 'Brookes,' consider relationships between word and image, and discuss the reciprocal interactions between politics and print.
