IT'S A BUSY WEEKEND AHEAD! Wow! What a week we have coming up! As we wind down February and head into March, our season is in full swing here, however; there are a lot of fun things going on in the rest of the world, too. Mardi Gras is coming later than usual this year and you'll find suggestions on having your own celebration in this issue. The Academy Awards...AKA Oscars... are this Sunday. With Ellen DeGeneres hosting, it should be terrific,- if we can stay awake 'til the end! Details for the broadcast time can also be found below, as well as some interesting Oscar facts. Speaking of awards, have you seen the musical SOUTH PACIFIC at our own Riverside Theater? When it premiered on Broadway in 1948 it won 10 Tony Awards...that's right,..10, and we can't imagine that it was any better than the current production at the Riverside. It's outstanding! Tonight, Thursday, is a Trunk Show at Radiance by Shannon. Come see us...we'll be there. Then you can keep the Trunk Show theme going throughout the weekend by heading over to St. Ed's Trunk Show that will run through Sunday. It's always fabulous. Art Under the Oaks at Riverside Park is this weekend and it an incredible show. For a day of fun with the kids head to either Sonfest at Church of the Nazarene or the Ecofest at the Environmental Learning Center. If our good weather keeps up, you might want to make plan's to get outdoors. Our Flash staff and friends 'tailgated' at the Vero Beach Polo Match last Sunday. We also joined friends for a sunset kayak trip on the Sebastian River. I highly suggest both! Back indoors, the wonderful Westmoreland exhibit is still going on at the Art Museum, and if you like photography, the time-lapse photography exhibit there should not be missed. It will never cease to amaze me that in a relatively small town, we have as much to do as a major city. Since I grew up in Miami, I know what it's like, and we have the same world class theater, art and music right here without having to fight all the traffic and crowds, - and our beaches are as good, or better! We live in a great place, Flashers. Take time to enjoy it! We are so lucky! :) Valerie Watkins Publisher |

MARDI GRAS WEEKEND BEGINS TOMORROW!
The carnival schedule in New Orleans begins tomorrow, ending on Mardi Gras (French for "Fat Tuesday") on March 4th. It always ends the day before Ash Wednesday with the beginning of Lent. If you want to join in the fun, there's still time to plan your own celebration. Selecting a menu is easy with this slide show from Southern Living featuring 31 traditional recipes including the famous King Cake. Click here. You ladies may want to invite a few girlfriends over and request that they wear Mardi Gras colors of Purple, Green and Gold. For entertainment, let them decorate homemade masks with feathers, "jewels" and ribbons supplied by you. Attach the finished masks to wooden dowels or skewers. Cut the masks from poster board using a template from this website. (This is fun for kids too!) Click here.

WEEKEND PROJECT
Boy! What a difference a little paint and some wallpaper or craft paper can make. You can have fun with this idea. Shop our fantastic local second hand shops - thrift stores for the perfect piece. Then clean it well and run some sandpaper over your piece to help the paint adhere. You can use spray paint or acrylic. If there is still a waxy varnish you might need to either prime your piece, or use an oil based paint. After you have painted your piece, cut your paper accent to fit the opening. Adhere with glue. You can water down the glue just a little to ease the spreading. After the paint and paper has dried for a complete day, apply a coat of varnish. I prefer the Minwax varnish and I usually apply three coats to the pieces that I paint. ENJOY!

SYLVESTER STALLONE AND "ROCKY"
A real-life Cinderella story!
In 1976, at 29 years old, Sylvester (Sly) Stallone had only played small parts in a few movies and had only $106 in his bank account when he decided to write the kind of story he himself would like to watch. When his script for ROCKY was finished, he was able to get it to two producers he had met. They liked it, but the problem was that Stallone also wanted to play the lead, and they refused. They mentioned possibly Burt Reynolds or Robert Redford for the role and continued to up their offers to buy the script, but Sly still refused. When the offer reached $333,000 and he still refused to sell, they finally relinquished and offered him the lead. However, with an unknown actor, United Artists Studios would only allow the film a $1 million dollar budget. To stay within the budget, the film was made in only 29 days. It went on to win 3 Oscars ...Best Film. Best Director, and Best Editing at the 1977 Academy Awards and has earned over $220 million around the world!
(...And the moral of this story is to never give up on your dream!)
NOTE: For another success story, be sure to read the Walt Disney post below.

First developed by NASA, LED works by sending energy-producing packets of light into the deeper layers of the skin. Red light LED stimulates the fibroblasts that produce collagen, which gives young skin its plump look. Professional LED machines can also minimize fine lines and wrinkles, treat sun-damage The results won't be as dramatic as plastic surgery, but it's a gentler, more natural, less expensive way to go. WRONG E-MAIL!
A couple had decided to vacation in Florida at a hotel where they had stayed before. Because of hectic schedules, it was difficult to coordinate their travel plans. So, the husband flew to Florida on Thursday. His wife would fly down the following day. The husband checked into the hotel. There was a computer in his room, so he decided to send an e-mail to his wife. However, he accidentally left out one letter in her e-mail address, and without realizing his error, he sent the e-mail. Meanwhile in Houston, a widow had just returned home from the funeral of her husband. The widow decided to check her e-mail, expecting condolence messages from relatives and friends. She fainted from shock when she found this note instead!
"To: My Loving Wife Subject: I've Arrived You may be surprised to hear from me. They have computers here now and you are allowed to send e-mails. I've just arrived and have been checked in. Everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow. Can't wait to see you!"

BREAKFAST IN RUSSIA
Now that the Olympics are over, we're beginning to hear what returning American tourists thought about everyday life in Russia. We thought these comments from a Conde Nast Traveler's writer about breakfast were especially interesting. Apparently, breakfast in Russia is more like a combination of breakfast and lunch, but don't think the delicious "brunch" like we have in the U.S.
A typical breakfast might include a hard boiled egg topped with caviar, served with cucumber slices and a drumstick with rice. Hmmm...For breakfast? Just another reason why it's great to be an American!

DID YOU KNOW?
Walt Disney still holds the record for the most Oscars (32) won by an individual!
Other interesting facts about Disney
* Disney was a contributing cartoonist for his high school paper.
* Disney dropped out of school at 16 to join the army but was rejected for being
underage. Instead, he joined the Red Cross and was sent to France for a year
to drive an ambulance.
* When Disney returned from France in 1919, he moved back to Kansas City to
pursue a career as a newspaper artist. His brother Roy got him a job at the
Pesmen-Rubin Art Studio, where he met cartoonist Ubbe Iwerks.
* He opened his own ad company.
* He declared bankruptcy in 1923.
* Walt and his brother, Roy, pooled their money and moved to California with
Iwerks where the three began the Disney Brothers' Studio.
* Their first deal was with New York distributor Margaret Winkler, to distribute
their cartoons. They also invented a character called Oswald the Lucky
Rabbit.
* He discovered that Winkler and her husband had stolen the rights to Oswald,
along with all of Disney's animators, except for Iwerks.
* Immediately Walt, his brother, and Iwerks produced three 'silent' cartoons
featuring a new character Walt had been developing called Mickey Mouse. But
they failed to find distribution.
* When sound made its way into film, Disney created a short called Steamboat
Willie where he was the voice of Mickey. It was an instant hit.
* This led the way to success in numerous full-length animated films including
Snow white, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, Bambi, Mary Poppins and more.
* Disney's $17 million Disneyland theme park opened in California in 1955.
* He began plans for a new theme park and Experimental Prototype Community
of Tomorrow in Florida.
* He Was diagnosed with lung cancer in 1966 and died that same year at the age
of 65.
* His brother, Roy, carried on the plans to finish the Florida theme park, which
opened in 1971 under the name Walt Disney World.

Dale Kennington, Exposure (recto), 2005 - 2007, oil on wood panel (six panels), 94 x 144 in. fully extended, each panel 94 x 24 in. Dale Kennington: Mythologies January 25 - May 4, 2014 Dale Kennington's paintings engage viewers both intellectually and emotionally. Following the death of her husband in 2002, she created two series of wood folding screens titled "Contemporary Mythologies" and "Subjective Mythologies," each combining representational illusion with penetrating emotion. Borrowing from the design principles of Asian folding screens, Kennington painted both sides of each screen as complementary halves of a single idea. These unique works of art by one of the South's most prominent female artists will make a lasting impression.

Vero Beach Museum of Art - 3001 Riverside Park Drive, Vero Beach FL 33163
Stephen Lawson's photographic works have been called "what memory looks like." Using film (not digital) cameras that he has mechanically modified, Lawson has created fascinating sectioned panoramas shot over varying periods of time. Unlike other time exposures, Lawson's photographs allow viewers to simulate the sensation of actually being on location, while experiencing the "fourth dimension." His photographs are composed of dozens, even hundreds, of separate "slices" of visual reality, each captured at a specific moment in time.

When the town of Vero was incorporated in 1919, it was one of several growing communities in the area. This lecture will discuss a number of themes to complete that picture, including the vital role women played in colonial protests against British taxation, how women contributed to the Patriot cause on the battlefield, how they supported the troops at home, and how they kept households and businesses running in the absence of husbands and fathers.
