editor's note poka-dot Happy Thursday FLASHERS!

I am setting myself down a week early to write this Editor's note; just like I resolved at the start of the new year. I look at this issue as it pops up and it says week #10 which means we are are well into 2014. I almost feel the urge to gloat when I type that I haven't 'quit' any of my New Year's resolutions yet! Yea for me! Now here's the secret...I haven't been able to quit, simply because I never started. (hee hee) Just our little secret. What a perfect little reminder that a moment of posturing might never quite be as it appears. (How is that for an editorial moral?) I'm sure I'm not the only one out there finding herself in this same little pickle. The start of the year was so crazy that I never could quite find the time to get started....not even able to get my toe over the start line! So, I looked to the beginning of March as my January 1st. I am the captain of my ship and it is that way simply because I said so! :) See how easy that is? I grant all of our FLASH late bloomers the permission to commence on a new path right along with me. We are following the beat of that different drum. That's right. We look at all of you who are still methodically and laboriously plodding along; all the while keeping your eye on the prize, having a plan and working your plan and all that other good stuff and we think...Hmmm...How in the world do they do that? ...and we applaud you!

Hopefully, we will all cross our goal line eventually, but I have no doubt that my path will look somewhat like a whimsical piece of modern art that provokes a great deal of question and absurd and profound bewilderment. I also have little doubt that you will be thinking...hmmmm...How in the world did she do that?  I do find it fun that we are all in search of betterment together, - a bit of whimsy and orthodox blending together to make it all work.  An additional moral this week...It's never to late to start something. It can be a resolution, lessons, career, ... you name it! The important thing is to never give up and to eventually get started!

LASH BEAUTY TIP OF THE WEEK

Sponsored by: Center for Facial Aesthetics      banner beauty tip

MY SKIN NEEDS A TRANSFORMATION

Skin is constantly replacing itself. New skin cells form in the deeper layers of skin and slowly make their way to the surface as dead skin cells are shed. This process works smoothly during youth - but with age it slows down. This causes skin to look dull and adds years to your face. Obagi Nu-Derm products are specifically formulated to target skin that has lost its vitality and youthful radiance by boosting skin cell turnover so healthier skin can be revealed. From gentle cleansing to toning and moisturizing, Obagi Nu-Derm System is a complete system formulated to remove dead skin cells and reveal healthy skin. The result is fresher, more radiant skin that looks years younger.
Added vitamins and minerals and ingredients that gently exfoliate ensure that your skin feels as healthy as it looks. Call today for a free consultation on Obagi and other skincare products. All Obagi products are 20% off in March at the Center for Facial Aesthetics in Sebastian.

A FUN CRAFT FOR UPCOMING SPRING BREAK

This is an adorable site that shows the progression of a Mom making paper dresses for her daughter. What fun! Take a peek for yourself. Click Here to access the Huff Post article to see the range of the creations. She recently showed her daughter pictures of stars on the red carpet at the Golden Globes. They soon had selections for their next creation!

SO YOU THINK THIS HAS BEEN A COLD WINTER?

To help our northern friends feel a little better...

It has been cold, but take a look at these state-by-state record lows as published by USA TODAY in 2006 and notice the dates. How about Tallahassee at -2 in 1899 or New Market Alabama at -27 in 1966?

DAN PETTUS

IS A POSITIVE PERSON

Dan Pettus is our deserving Positive Person this week. Thus far, Dan's life has transformed him from victim, turned survivor, turned inspirer. Dan moved to Vero with his family when he was 10. That same year he entered the tumultuous world of foster care. As a foster child he was bounced in and out of 8 different homes until he aged out of the system at the age of 18. That equates to a different home every year during the formative years as an adolescent. What Dan has been able to accomplish as a fine young adult is quite amazing and should serve as an inspiration to all of us. But first some background.

Dan attended Vero Beach HS for 3 years, until relocating to Port St. Lucie due to a change in foster placement. While attending Vero Beach, he became intrigued by kickboxing and wrestling, a sport where he excelled and served as team captain. Dan did lose his way after graduation and dropped a class at college which resulted in him losing his Road to Independence (RTF) funding. RTF was enacted in 2002 to give financial support and life skills training to those who have aged out of the foster care system. Dan 'couch surfed' for a year before he got his legs back under him and scrambled to reenroll in school where he worked hard for his grades. That effort landed him on the Dean's List...assuring his eligibility for assistance.

At the age of 23 Dan is currently a pro MMA fighter, advocate for foster children, Board member for the Alliance Child Service of Okeechobee and the Treasure Coast, electrical engineering student, restaurant staff worker, wrestling coach at the Forge Mixed Martial Arts and he works 20 hours a week as a counselor at Deveraux Community Based Care of Okeechobee and TC. WOW! Dan even took to the halls in Tallahassee last year to lobby for those who have aged out of foster care. In part, because of his efforts, Governor Scott signed the Nancy C. Detert Common Sense and Compassion Independent Living Act which replaced the RTF program and provides a monthly stipend as well as other benefits to former foster care children now aged 18-21.

I know all of our FLASHERS will agree that Dan is the epitome of a Positive Person and possesses such admirable character that has enabled him to set an extraordinary example of how one can utilize the hardships that life can sometimes deal and transform it into something remarkably positive. What a legacy Dan has already accomplished. Congratulations Dan and a very sincere thank you for the positive impact you have made and continue to have on our community and as far reaching as the entire state of Florida.
