editor's note poka-dotOUR NEW LANGUAGE?

Have you noticed how our language is changing? Maybe it's because of texting that so many words are becoming abbreviated. Need examples? Information has become info,  application is an app, and a graduate is a grad. Those are just a few abbreviations that the new SCRABBLE PLAYER'S DICTIONARY now recognizes as official words. Of course, texting has become a language of its own. Some text abbreviations are easy to recognize like u r, but did you know ty is thank you and yw is you're welcome. My personal favorite is *$. That's Starbucks! You won't hear English teachers lol (laugh out loud) about this trend. We understand they're pretty upset about it and with good reason. Can you imagine what Spelling Bees will be like in the future? (Hmm...I wonder why a spelling contest is called a bee? Maybe I should google that. And by the way, when did google become a verb?) Teens, and even younger children, who may have had problems learning a foreign language in school, seem to have had no trouble at all learning the texting language. If you want to try to learn it yourself, this website has one of the more complete lists. Click here. If you prefer to test your knowledge of our more traditional vocabulary, try the word game in the post you'll find below. My  own very favorite word is probably "fun." In the original version of the movie Arthur,  the late Dudley Moore asked, "Isn't fun the best thing to have?" If you agree, you will find a lot of fun things to do this week and don't forget it's the last weekend for the Firefighter's Fair.  See you there Flashers!

Today is the first day of SPRING! Spring Break for Indian River County public schools will begin when school lets out tomorrow! ENJOY!

GROW A GARDEN FROM KITCHEN SCRAPS

My mother says that she once had a neighbor who would scrape her dinner plates directly into a trench in her backyard and grew a beautiful garden of produce! I'm not too sure about that, but you can grow certain vegetables and fruits from kitchen scraps. Here's a link to ten of those with 'how to' directions. Click here.

IT'S SPRING! BUY A HAT!

In olden times, a lady  would never leave the house in the daytime without wearing a hat or carrying a parasol. And men wore hats, too. This wasn't just a fashion statement; it was to protect their skin from the sun. Later, hats were ditched when men and women decided that a tan made them look better and healthier,...but now we know better, don't we? Flash thinks it may be time to bring back the hat, and what better time than the first day of Spring. Some hats are better than others. The wide-brimmed hat is hailed as one of the top performers among sun-protective hats. According to Dr. Ira Davis, spokesperson for the American Academy of Dermatology, for every inch of hat brim you regularly wear, you're reducing your risk of cancer by 10 percent. So a hat with a four-inch brim, worn regularly, could slash your skin cancer risk by 40 percent. However, if you buy a straw hat, make sure it's tightly woven rather than 'lacy'. Just as in yesteryear, a hat can add a lot of style to an outfit, and a plus for you ladies, they're great to hide under on a bad hair day!

FLASH BEAUTY TIP OF THE WEEK

Sponsored by: Center for Facial Aesthetics      banner beauty tip

IS IT NORMAL FOR MY EYELASHES TO THIN AS I AGE?

Unfortunately, thinning eyelashes are part of the aging process. So, if your lashes don't seem to have the same length and fullness they once did, don't worry, in most cases, there's no reason for alarm. Still, you should share any concerns with your health care provider. Eyelash growth has four stages: growth, resting, shedding and regrowth. Your lashes continuously cycle through these four stages. As we age, eyelash follicles (the openings in the skin through which the lash grows) can slow or stop producing new lashes altogether. Aside from age, there are other reasons someone might not have enough lashes.

* Scrubbing or rubbing eyelashes too hard, which can damage the skin and cause delicate

  eyelashes to fall out

* Heredity

* Medical conditions and some medications & treatments

Latisse Eyelash Enhancement is the only FDA approved, prescription strength product proven to make lashes grow longer, thicker, and darker. It is safe and definitely effective.

An extra large kit is on sale now for only $100, save $59

at the Center for Facial Aesthetics in Sebastian.

MARCH MADNESS PRINTABLE CHART

March Madness is upon us and it promises to be even crazier this year. You may have heard that Warren Buffett and Quicken loans have teamed up to offer $1 billion to anyone who correctly predicts the outcome of each one of the 63 games in the NCAA men's basketball tournament.  (Since there are reportedly 9 quintillion,...yes, that's a 'Q'... ways to fill out a bracket, we don't think Buffet's going to be losing any money!) Since the series begins tonight, the deadline for the contest entry was last night.  However, if you want to see if you could have predicted the winner of all 63 games, you can print your own copy of the chart. Click here and if you need to know who is playing who and when; Click here. Forgive me ... But, I just have to do a little plug for the ole alma mater. Mercer University will play Duke tomorrow at 12:15 on CBS.  If you 'don't have a horse in this race' and you want to cheer on the BEARS....JUST DO IT!  (It can happen!...You gotta believe!) Some national press has Mercer picked as the 'trendy' upset pick of all this madness. See what they say! Pssst.  A member of Team FLASH went to Duke so we have an in-house rivalry going on...She thinks they are going to win. HA!  There's nothing like college sports! :) ENJOY THE MADNESS!

Having fun and doing good for others doesn't need to be mutually exclusive. Actually, the two concepts are highly compatible. Just ask the women members of Orchid Island Golf and Beach Club. The first annual "Connecting for Cancer Girls' Night Out" was held Monday, March 10 at the home of Annette (and Jerry) Lovell and raised more than twice their goal.

Varnedoe Class of '67 Professor - Williams College Vermeer's Hold on Our Attention After Rembrandt, Jan Vermeer stands out as the favorite Dutch figure painter of the seventeenth century, known as The Golden Age. His mature works have but a small range of subjects, usually one or two women doing something indoors. Yet hundreds of people lined up in bitter cold for hours in 1995 to see the Vermeer exhibition at the National Gallery, and when crowds of visitors finally got inside, the crowded galleries remained strangely quiet. Discover what gives Vermeer's art such drawing and absorbing power for viewers today.

12:00pm - 5:00pmGarden Club of Indian River County Flower Show

Location - Check Event Description - Details in description, Vero Beach FL

The flower show will be held at the "Villa Festiva", a historic home, the first to be built on the ocean in the Old Riomar section of Vero Beach. The home is built as a classic Castilian country home characterized by two enclosed courtyards. This is a private residence, and the flower show will allow you a rare opportunity to see the house. Kitty Phillips was the daughter of Winchester and Florence Fitch. Mrs. Fitch founded the Vero Beach Garden Club (now the Garden Club of Indian River County) in her Riomar house "Orchid Oaks" in 1928. There is no parking at the house. There will be no handicapped parking around the house, so you are asked to park in the parking lot of the Transoceanic Building at the corner of A1A and 17th street. There will be buses to take you to the house and return you to your car when you are finished viewing the flower show. The house is not wheelchair accessible. Members of the garden club will exhibit 44 artistic designs throughout the house. The horticulture entries will be located under a tent on the south side of the house. The public is invited to exhibit their prized horticulture, which they can register by using the interactive form. The form is designed to be completed online and either printed or emailed as per directions on the form. Call for more information: 772-567-4602
