APRIL IS HERE -

AND SPRING HAS SPRUNG!

The first day of Spring may fall in March, but the signs of Spring usually don't really arrive up north until April. Living in Vero, we are blessed with spring-like weather for most of the winter, but in April you will still notice some changes. The bottle-brush, the oleanders and many other trees and bushes are flowering.  Forget February valentines, April is really the month of love. Songwriters love April, - just  think of all the songs, ... "April In Paris," "April Showers,"   and  Pat Boone crooning "April Love," to mention just a few.  In his poem "Locksley Hall,"  Alfred, Lord Tennyson wrote, "In the Spring a young man's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love." Well, so does the 'fancy' of  a lot of other creatures! Turtle Season has started, so watch for those turtle tracks on the beach and even male alligators are on the move, looking for girlfriends. My mom has a pair of the elusive Painted Buntings hanging out in her backyard. Love has sprung! As spring migration gets further underway, so it will be with our "snowbird friends." Season is coming to a close and they will be packing to head back to their northern homes. (If you're one of these, please check out our food pantry post  below.) We'll miss all of you and the many activities that you bring to our busy winter season, but as you'll see in this week's issue, there is still a lot going on in our town. Make sure you head to the polo field for the last match of the season this Sunday. You will also not want to miss the Open House Trunk Show at Citrus Grillhouse this afternoon for the J. Hilburn men's clothing line. The first Friday Gallery Stroll downtown, Comedy Zone at Riverside on Friday and Saturday, Saturday's Farmers Market, the Poetry & BBQ at Environmental Learning Center, free fishing weekend ....and the list goes on. Make sure to check out the Community Calendar at the bottom of the newsletter and get out and enjoy everything our town has to offer!

PAULINE ADAMS WINS 2014 "BRAVEHEART AWARD"

 FROM MILITARY MOMS PRAYER GROUP

R to L: Pauline Adams (center) winner of the 2014 Braveheart Award.

With Pauline from left are Linda Colontrelle, Vice President, and Pam Proctor, President.

Congratulations to Pauline Adams, a former FLASH  Positive Person! Pauline knew that she could raise thousands of dollars for the work of the Military Moms Prayer Group and she was right! In just two and a half years, Pauline, owner of I'll Never Tell Jewelry on Ocean Drive, has raised $26,100 -- mostly from the sale of $12, heart-shaped, "Braveheart Pins" -- to support the Military Moms Prayer Group's outreach to deployed servicemen and women.

For her "extraordinary service to U.S. troops and to the Military Moms," Pauline has won the prayer group's 2014 Braveheart Award.  "Our sons and daughters continue to be deployed to Afghanistan, Africa, and other trouble spots," says Pam Proctor, President of the Military Moms Prayer Group.  Pauline is a true 'braveheart', who understands the sacrifices these men and women and their families are making.  Her generosity will enable us to continue to reach out to our heroes and let them know that they are not forgotten."  Since 2006, an estimated 12,500 gift boxes have been sent to troops overseas from residents of Indian River County through the prayer group's gift drives at holidays and throughout the year.

As for Pauline, she says, "I've been touched by the overwhelming support of the people in this community for our fighting men and women. Their excitement about the Braveheart Pin and what it represents has made this milestone possible." But Pauline isn't resting on her laurels.  Her new goal is to reach $30,000 by the end of the summer.  "I knew once I started on this mission that I wasn't going to stop," she says. "I'll never give up until all of our troops are home." For more information, call Pauline at: 231-1148, or contact the Military Moms Prayer Group: 538-4422. Better yet...stop by I'll Never Tell and purchase your $12 Braveheart Pin!

PLAY AND LEARN WITH PLASTIC EGGS

With Easter coming on April 20th, now is the perfect time to turn those plastic eggs into a fun learning tool.  I know our wee FLASHERS will want to play with these eggs.  Some of the above ideas require you to separate the eggs and have the child find the matching half. Examples are the time, contraction, antonym, and synonym eggs. Others will ask your little one to twist and learn as in the family of words egg which can also teach rhyming words. Sight words can be much more fun to learn when you add the element of surprise by putting it inside an egg. You can make each lesson its own little game and easily store them separately in zip lock bags. Happy Learning!

HOW TO EAT A POMEGRANATE

Did you know that some Biblical scholars believe that the "forbidden fruit" was the pomegranate, not the apple, in the story of Adam and Eve? Well, it's certainly not "forbidden" now! You may have noticed more of them in the supermarkets and have probably heard all the recent hype about how good pomegranates are for your health. According to Allison Tannis, author of Feed Your Skin, Starve Your Wrinkles, the fruit contains the nutrient Ellagic acid which can even help to reverse age spots.  Pomegranates are also loaded with anthocyanins -- powerful inflammation-fighting antioxidants. So, we know they're good for us,...but how in the heck do you eat the darn things?  FLASH to the rescue! Here's a scroll down picture screen that shows you how to cut and eat them, and offers ideas on how to use them in your food preparation. Click here.

 SURPRISING USES FOR MAGNETS

Magnets aren't just for refrigerators! They have many other practical uses and you may want to keep one in every room in your house. Many of the newer homes have metal studs. If you're hanging pictures, you can find them, as well as nails in the wall,  by moving a magnet across the wall until it sticks. Slip a small magnet under the clip on a pen to keep on your fridge next to your grocery list. Keep one in your garage to pick up spilled nails and nuts, in your office for paper clips and near your sewing supplies for needles and pins. All types of magnets are available in  craft stores. Office supply stores have 'peel off' magnets sized for business cards or trimmed for school pics. Our new favorite is a magnetic paint that can be found in home improvement stores.  For its use, see our weekend project in a post below.

WEEKEND  PROJECT
"MAGNETIZE" A CHILD'S ROOM

Rust-Oleum makes a Magnetic Primer base coat that allows you to create a surface that attracts magnets almost anywhere. You can use it to create a fun and unexpected way to hang notes, photos and more. Imagine letting a little one decorate his room with his own artwork or allowing your teens to hang all the posters and pics they choose. This paint may be applied to wood, metal, masonry, drywall and plaster; and then top-coated with any color latex paint or even Chalkboard paint. Click here to check it out.

  LITTLE TOMMY'S SAD STORY

"My first grade teacher asked me what my favorite animal was, and I said, fried chicken.
She said I wasn't funny and sent me to the principal's office."

"The next day in class my teacher asked me what my favorite live animal was.
I told her it was chicken. She asked me why, so I told her it was because you could make them into fried chicken. She sent me back to the principal's office."

"Today, my teacher asked me to tell her what famous person I admired most.
I told her, Colonel Sanders. Guess where I am now . . .?

  FLASH VIDEO OF THE WEEK

Even if you are too young to remember the fabulous movie routines of dancers Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, we think you will enjoy this clip anyway. Bob Thaves, author of the comic strip "FRANK AND ERNEST" once drew a cartoon that stated Ginger could do everything that Fred could, "and she did it backward and in high heels!" The quote has since become famous and is frequently repeated  by women like former Texas Governor Ann Richards who used it in a political speech.

FIRST ANNUAL YOUTH GUIDANCE BREAKFAST A HUGE SUCCESS

Youth Guidance is proud to announce the success of their first annual 'Help Us Level The Playing Field' Breakfast. The fundraiser, held at the Quail Valley River Club on March 25, raised over $25,000 in gifts and pledges. It was attended by over 90 community members who came out to support and learn about the 40 year old mentoring program.  The breakfast was a culmination of the Youth Guidance tours that commenced in August of 2013. The outreach tours were held monthly and attended by the community. They were a vehicle to get the Youth Guidance message out, share mentor success stories and tell about the newest activities and mentoring programs Youth Guidance is offering the children. If you are interested in volunteering or would like more information please call: 772-770-5040

Saturday, March 29th was a busy day of spring cleaning in the community of Arbor Trace in Vero Beach.  Over 25 families contributed items to Homeless Family Center's " A Second Chance Thrift Store and Training Center."   The store's donation truck was parked in the community and about 25 families contributed household items, adult and kids clothing, furniture, toys, and even a nice dryer.  The truck was filled to the brim.

A Second Chance Thrift and Training Center is changing lives one family at a time by creating skilled employees and entrepreneurs.  The store sells a variety of items from household items, furniture, clothing and much more.   The thrift store is located at 490 Old Dixie Highway in Vero Beach and open 10 - 6 Mon-Fri and 10-4 on Saturday.  Donations are accepted and pickups can be scheduled by calling 772-492-9333. "Casting Our Future," the Capital Campaign for the East Wing Expansion Project of the Vero Beach Theatre Guild's building, broke ground at an official ceremony held Thursday, March 27.  A Chamber of Commerce After Hours Reception was held immediately following, along with the performance of several numbers from Kiss Me Kate inside the theatre itself. The $1,000,000 campaign is to be used towards the much needed, behind-the-scenes renovations to improve the working conditions for volunteer cast and crew.  The Theatre Guild has produced a menu of donor options, from naming opportunities to recognition plaques and cash donation. Pledges for all levels of support may be paid as a one-time gift or in monthly installments and are fully tax deductible.

For more information on the expansion project as well as donor pledges, call 772-562-8300 or visit the box office at: 2020 San Juan Avenue, in Vero Beach.

FUTURE MARINE BIOLOGIST MEETS ORCA'S EDIE WIDDER

Among the audience at the final presentation of the 2014 ORCA Planet and Oceans Speakers Series was a 14-year-old future marine biologist from Westminster, Maryland.  After having been fascinated and captivated by Dr. Widder online on Ted Talks, Natalie Adamez's stepfather came up with a plan. After a Christmas gift scavenger hunt, Natalie found that she would be flying to Vero Beach in late March to be wowed once more by Dr. Widder, only this time in person. So, on March 27th both father and daughter, both smiling widely, walked into the Emerson to ask when the auditorium doors would be opened.  The story of the Christmas gift was told, and when Widder arrived, she was introduced to Natalie and Gurecki and spent some special time with them before the road trip back to Orlando to catch an early flight so that Natalie could be back in school the next day.
