Happy Thursday FLASHERS!
TAX TIME IS HERE! Chances are, if you're like most of us, you've been scurrying around trying to find that missing receipt that's the only thing you still need to complete your taxes before next Tuesday's midnight deadline. I don't know why the "Ides of March," on March 15th, is so dreaded. Perhaps we should change it to April 15th, - the "Ides of April". Passover, which celebrates the deliverance of the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt, begins at sunset the night before on April 14th. It would be great if we could just "pass over" taxes, wouldn't it? Anyway, it's almost over for another year, so you won't find anymore talk of taxes in this issue. I prefer to think about more fun things, like ... kayaking! I know, - taxes to kayaking? Well...We all need to find our release...our Zen ... our 'happy place'! I found mine a couple of weeks ago in a kayak.
As all observant FLASHERS can tell, ...I like color! So, I had my heart set on shopping for a bright, fun, kayak that would emit the energy and enthusiasm that I myself was planning to bring to this newly discovered pastime. That's NOT what I got. I bought a small drab, beige kayak. It's probably one of the most practical things I have done in my life. I didn't opt for the bright green or turquoise 'fun' kayaks because they were larger and I knew it would be more of a hassle when I wanted to go out by myself. Nor did I have the patience to wait for a special order. Beige it is. But, it does have a couple of rod holders and I plan to jazz it up with stickers from the different locations I plan to travel with my kayak in tow.
My husband encouraged me by giving me a special gift for our 29th anniversary. Champagne? Flowers? Jewels? Nope! - A fishing rod! (He knows me so well!) So, last weekend I went out to enjoy the free fishing weekend. Never in a million years did I ever think I would catch anything! Even though my father was a multi world record holder...I didn't seem to 'catch' that gene. BUT...Low and behold I wasn't 15 minutes into my 2-1/2 hour trek when I heard the line on my rod hum. And 'lookie' there! I caught a snapper that I've been told was a 'keeper'. But, I let the little feller go. He did me a favor by adding such excitement to my excursion that I couldn't help but return the favor!
I hope some of you headed out on the water after seeing the "free fishing" post in last week's FLASH. If you didn't let me entice you. It won't be a free fishing weekend, so you will need a license if you want to fish. But, you certainly don't need a license for excitement. In the past couple of weeks I have seen many dolphin - but my favorite was a family with a new baby that the parents repeatedly helped to the surface. I've also seen 3 curious otters that swam up to my boat, raccoons that come to the edge of the water to greet me, beautiful riverscapes, wonderful birds, unbelievable sunsets .... Always something different is waiting for me. Enjoy my collage of photos below. And shoot me an email if you have a kayak and want to join me! The more the merrier...which brings me to the post below.
Enjoy Life FLASHERS! A special thank you to a FLASHER, Jeni Starr Housley, for introducing me to kayaking! :)

ADVENTUROUS FLASHERS .... JOIN US!
Okay FLASHERS...I had an idea while kayaking last week. This was my thought...There are groups set up for just about everything. There are networking groups, volunteer groups, alumni groups, professional groups, photography groups, book review groups, trivia groups, craft groups, food review groups, there's probably even a group on how to form groups. I have no doubt that they are all absolutely fabulous. However, I believe the best is yet to come. We don't have to be so limited. What about those of us who like to try new things? Some may call it a severe case of A-D-D. I prefer 'The Adventurous FLASHERS!' Now that's a group! Every week I get emails and phone calls from so many of you for a wide variety of reasons. Some of you are new in town and looking for a way to connect. This is it! Others are engrained in our community and want to share what you know. Again, this is it! I suggest we get together. What fun we can have! If you have the slightest interest...Send me an email. Please include your name, interest, age (if you'd like) and note if you are interested in being a part of the 'founding group' to brainstorm this tremendous idea! I'll plan a fun initial brainstorm party! No need to be shy! In the FLASH world there are no such things as strangers...we are simply friends who haven't met yet! COME JOIN THE FUN THAT"S ABOUT TO EXPLODE! I feel it! :)

SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS
If you are a worker age 18 or older, you can get your personal Social Security Statement online. The Statement is a valuable tool to help you plan a secure financial future. It provides you with a record of your earnings and gives estimates of what your Social Security benefits would be at different retirement ages. It also gives an estimate of the disability benefits you could receive if you become severely disabled before retirement. You can also view estimates of the 'survivor benefits' Social Security would provide your spouse and eligible family members when you die. To review your statement you need to create an account online. Visit the government website by clicking here.
NOTE: Unless you are disabled, you must have worked a minimum of 10 years to be eligible for retirement benefits. |

IS THAT BOTTLE AN ANTIQUE?
We know that some of you collect old bottles, and even the rest of us will occasionally pick up a bottle on the beach or in the woods just out of curiosity. Here's a tip from antique experts the Kovels. If the bottle appears to be a medicine container and has the words "cure" or "remedy" embossed on the side, it was probably made before 1906. That's when the U.S. government passed the Pure Food and Drug Act that regulated so-called cures and remedies in ads and on packaging. To be considered an 'antique,' an item should be over 100 years old, but some newer items might be considered 'collectibles.' Now you know! :)

DID YOU KNOW?
WHAT PASSOVER AND EASTER HAVE IN COMMON
The answer is a hard boiledegg. The hardboiled egg is one of the seven foods served on the traditional Jewish Seder Plate. It has two meanings, symbolizing both fertility and mourning.
For Christians, the Easter Egg also symbolizes fertility, as well as new life and rebirth. Some have associated the shell as Christ's tomb and the cracking of it as the resurrection. For more about the symbols of both Seder and Easter, click the websites below. Seder - Click Here Easter - Click Here |

EASTER EGG HUNT FOR TEENS
If your teenagers have outgrown the Easter Bunny, here's another idea. Have an after dark Egg Hunt next weekend. Invite some of their friends over and ask each of them to bring a flashlight. (Have a few extra on hand for the "I forgots.") Fill plastic eggs with candies and coins, with a $5 bill in the 'special' Golden Egg. Hide them outside in a dark yard under bushes and in trees. I did this for my own kids when they were in high school and they loved it! :)

FLASH BEAUTY TIP OF THE WEEK
Sponsored by: Center for Facial Aesthetics
THE POWER OF RETINOL (Retinoic Acid, Vitamin A)
1. Retinol fights fine lines AND deep wrinkles!
2. Retinol's strength is not only determined by its concentration. Retinol's
efficacy relies heavily on its formulation and delivery system. A product containing a
higher percentage level of Retinol will not necessarily work better or faster.
3. Retinol must penetrate skin to improve it. Delivering Retinol in an encapsulated form
enables it to penetrate into the skin's surface, improving performance. Many other over-
the-counter products only topically coat the skin, compromising results.
4. Retinol can degrade if not packaged properly. An air-tight, opaque tube or bottle helps
maintain the formula's stability by preventing oxygen or UV-light penetration.
5. Retinol works best when introduced gradually to your regimen. Using Retinol is like
training for a marathon. Slowly build up your tolerance level--begin by applying a
product containing Retinol every other day.
6. Retinol products can be safely used on sunny days. Apply your retinol at night, it will do
its work while you sleep and active ingredient will be gone in the morning.
7. Retinol will complement AHA usage. Alpha- hydroxy acids exfoliate the skin, enabling
Retinol to penetrate into the skin's surface even more efficiently. A product containing
both ingredients is best used at night to avoid sensitivity.
8. Retinol improves more than just wrinkles. It not only reduces the appearance of fine
lines and deep wrinkles, but also improves skin tone, the signs of photo-damage and
pore size. Combined with sun protection, it's the gold standard in anti-aging.

URGENT... TAKE THE TIME TO READ THIS
In case you did not see the Nightly News last night, a massive security flaw has been identified in the system that is widely used to keep websites secure. There is no way of determining how much information has been illegally obtained. It is highly recommended that you change all of your passwords to any account where you have personal information at risk. Bank accounts, retail sites, and even social media. However before you change any passwords, make sure the site has taken action to remedy the problem. A notice should be posted. If you see the message...change the password. WEEKEND PROJECT
Hanging Mini Egg Vases
Take some time this weekend to make a few of these adorable little hanging eggs. All you need to do is gently crack one end of the egg. Rinse out the inside and then hot glue colored ribbon. I suggest hanging your egg from 3 ribbons to help your egg balance better. Then top it off with greenery from your yard or some spring flower sprigs. This could look nice with dyed eggs too! ENJOY!

TODAY'S CHUCKLE
Upon meeting each other for the first time, four widows began discussing their late husbands and praising their virtues. When the fourth one spoke, she said, "Well. I've been married four times and I've had four wonderful husbands! The first one was a brilliant older man who was very wealthy. When he died, he left me a great deal of money. My second husband was an actor. We led a very glamorous life and traveled the world. The third was a preacher and I learned so much from him. And my fourth husband was an undertaker."
"My, that's certainly an unusual group of men," one of the women exclaimed!
"Not really," she replied. "One for the money. Two for the show. Three to get ready. And four to go!"

 FLASH TIP OF THE WEEK
FRESH UP
Have some laundry with a musty smell? Maybe towels left in the wash too long or work out and sports clothes? Here is an easy tip to get them smelling like the freshness of spring. Wash your load on the hot cycle and add 1 cup of vinegar. Of course make sure that your garments can withstand the hot cycle. Do not use detergent or anything, especially bleach. Let the washer do its job. Then, if you still smell a little bit, rewash with just hot water and 1/2 cup of baking soda.

FISHING TIP
Spring is the best time of year to catch bass, when fish move into shallow water to spawn. Spawning may occur as early as January in extreme south Florida and as late as May in the panhandle, but March and April are peak months. Most large bass are taken at this time; after spawning, many large females move to offshore areas.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
PERFECT HARD BOILED EGGS
Whether you're preparing eggs for Passover or Easter, it's annoying when the shell cracks during cooking or the white stick to the shell while peeling. This method will almost guarantee that they turn out just right!
For a dozen eggs, fill up a large saucepan half-way with water and gently add the eggs. Cover the eggs with at least an inch of water. Add a teaspoon of vinegar to the water (this will help contain egg whites from leaking out if any of the shells crack while cooking). Add a pinch of salt to the water. Bring the water to a boil. Cover, and remove from heat. Let sit covered for 12-15 minutes. Drain hot water from pan and run cold water over the eggs. (At this point if you crack the egg shells while the eggs are cooling, it will make it easier to peel the shells.) Let sit in the cool water a few minutes, changing the water if necessary to keep it cool.
NOTE: If you have extra eggs left from your Seder celebration or Easter hunt, here are 13 very different and delicious ways to prepare deviled eggs by mixing in curry powder, horseradish , bacon, etc. Click here

Walk into the narthex of Christ the King Lutheran Church this Lenten season, glance upward and you'll be warmly greeted with the very large, peaceful and comforting mural of Jesus Christ holding a lamb and surrounded by numerous sheep.
The 4 ½ by six-foot banner was painted by Sebastian artist Dave Sandgren using acrylics on canvas. "I've seen many paintings of the Good Shepherd, and felt drawn to paint such a picture myself," Sandgren recalls. So one day he started painting.

VISIONARY PHILANTHROPISTS GATHER
AT ALMA LEE LOY LEGACY SOCIETY LUNCHEON
Quail Valley River Club served as the backdrop for a luncheon in honor of the members of the Alma Lee Loy Legacy Society, a group of philanthropists who have made a commitment to the future of Indian River County through a planned gift administered by the Indian River Community Foundation.
Kerry Bartlett, Executive Director of the Indian River Community Foundation, said the luncheon was an opportunity to help the members of the Alma Lee Loy Legacy Society make connections with others who have also chosen to use the Indian River Community Foundation as a vehicle for executing their charitable giving beyond their lifetimes.
"Alma Lee Loy embodies all that we stand for at the Foundation - loyalty to Indian River County, vision and an abiding commitment to philanthropy - which is exactly what we promise our legacy society members," Bartlett said.
|
The Board of Directors of the Indian River Community Foundation recently elected Vero Beach resident Robert B. Burr, Jr. to a three-year term. Burr joins 17 other volunteer board members elected annually to provide leadership and governance in fulfilling the organization's mission to build a stronger community through donor-driven philanthropy.
Before retiring in 2012, Burr was professionally associated for 39 years with Richard K. Mellon and Sons in Ligonier, Pa., serving most recently as Executive Vice President and Chief Investment Officer. Through this affiliation he also served as a Trustee and Chief Investment Officer for both the Richard King Mellon Foundation and the R.K. Mellon Family Foundation.

Following the death of her husband in 2002, she created two series of wood folding screens titled "Contemporary Mythologies" and "Subjective Mythologies," each combining representational illusion with penetrating emotion. Borrowing from the design principles of Asian folding screens, Kennington painted both sides of each screen as complementary halves of a single idea. Unlike other time exposures, Lawson's photographs allow viewers to simulate the sensation of actually being on location, while experiencing the "fourth dimension." His photographs are composed of dozens, even hundreds, of separate "slices" of visual reality, each captured at a specific moment in time.
