HAPPY EASTER FLASHERS!

I hope the Easter Bunny is planning a stop at your house this long weekend and that you will be spending this special time with family and friends. My husband and I are delighted that two of our three children will be coming in from Georgia. We're hoping our close friends Donna and Dr. George Burke from Miami will also be joining us 'cause we'll be gathering for a pot-luck  Easter feast with my Mom and my sister and niece who live here in town.  I first met my friend Donna when our now grown sons were in kindergarten together and we were volunteering at their school. Thinking about that caused me to remember that I got to know most of  my other friends the same way, -  volunteering  with various organizations, at church or my children's schools. I imagine that's also true for many of you. Did you know that this month is NATIONAL VOLUNTEER MONTH? There are so many worthwhile organizations in our County that would love to have your help. You're almost guaranteed to make a new friend if you pick a cause that you're especially interested in helping because the people you meet there obviously share that same interest. Especially if you're new to our area, this is a great way to get to meet people. Need suggestions? Many of our local organizations are mentioned in the posts below or in our weekly calendar. I'm sure any one of them would be happy to get a phone call from you offering your help! So FLASHERS...Get out and volunteer and make a new friend! :)

IMPORTANT INTERNET SECURITY UPDATE!

Last week we alerted our FLASHERS to a major security threat. The news media were warning the public to go online and change passwords on vulnerable sites that had been breached.  McAfee Security has now published a list of sites that were affected as well as those that were not. Thankfully, most bank and credit card sites were not affected, but many social media and shopping sites were. To view the complete list, Click Here. Be sure to read the comment from the respective companies to the right of the 'Yes/no' column.

  DID YOU KNOW?

 SLEEP HABITS

Humans are among the few animals that take their sleep in one shot. The rest of the animal kingdom consists of polyphasic sleepers; they alternate sleep and wake cycles throughout a 24 hour period. Don't you wish we could all do that?!

FLASH BEAUTY TIP OF THE WEEK

Threading - How does that Work?

Recently threading, an ancient custom, has become very popular in the US beauty industry. But how does it work? And is it better than waxing our unwanted hair away.  A cotton thread is pulled along unwanted hair in a twisting motion, to trap hair in a mini lasso, and lifts hair right out of the follicle.

1. It's extremely sanitary. Nothing but the thread touches the skin, and it's thrown

away after use.

2. Great for people with 'trouble' brows. Threading has this amazing ability to be so

concise in the hair that it removes. It's sworn by people who say they can never get

their eyebrows even, despite tweezing, waxing or sugaring.

3. No chemicals are applied on the skin. When people have certain circumstances,

or are taking medicines that conflicts with waxing and sugaring, they may be able to

turn to threading.

4. It's very fast. Although every technician is different, it takes the person who has

threaded my eyebrows two minutes flat, from start to finish.

5. Temporary results can turn into permanent. Over time, frequent threading can

cause the hair follicle to become damaged, and stop growing hair.

Ouch Factor? The discomfort is similar to tweezing, but the process is much, much quicker. Some people say they have very little pain from threading, but it has a lot to do with the skill of the technician. Use a warm compress to relax the hair follicle for an easier exit, and apply a numbing spray prior to service if you have a low tolerance to any discomfort.

Call Gisele today to give it a try. She is trained and specializes in the art of threading.

SWEET ALTERNATIVES FOR FILLED EGGS

If you're trying to cut back on the candy, here are some ideas for other 'fillers' for plastic eggs. Go with a couple of friends to buy and share packs of miniature birthday favors. They usually come with about 8 per package and you can find rolls of stickers, 'diamond' rings, balloons, and even small bottles of bubble soap. A variety of nuts is also good, and kids especially like shelling pistachios. Try dried apricots (they look like little ears) or plain or yogurt covered raisins. Most kids love Chex trail mix and you can add a few M&Ms. The individual packs of miniature cookies, yogurt pretzels and 'Cheez-it' crackers are good. For older kids you might want to print out motivational messages to keep them on track with their goal be it to lose weight or to achieve a different new year's resolution. I did this for my daughter and she gets to open an egg a day and post the new message to her bathroom mirror.  Of course, coins and dollar bills are also perfect in size and in smiles of appreciation...I can almost see it all the way from Greensboro, Ga! :)

TAVERN ON THE GREEN IS BACK!

The landmark Tavern On the Green restaurant is returning to the 'Big Apple' this month with an opening night dinner on April 24th! In case you aren't familiar with the Tavern, it used to be a favorite dining spot for New York visitors. Located in Central Park, it was noted for its elaborate décor, especially the all glass pavilion known as the Crystal Room with its many chandeliers. It closed in 2010, but has now undergone a $15.9 million renovation by the city. The interior of the building is being refitted by the Philadelphia restaurateurs Jim Caiola and David Salama, to whom the city granted a 20-year operating license in 2012. Reservations are now being accepted for dinner, with  lunch and brunch starting in May for Mother's Day weekend.

VIDEO OF THE WEEK

THE TEN TENORS

Why not plan a spring trip to New York? With Tavern on the Green reopening and "ROCKY" on Broadway, it's a great time to visit the Big Apple. To get you in the mood, here are the fabulous Ten Tenors from Australia who are currently touring the U.S. They made this appearance on the Kathy Lee & Hoda Show a few weeks ago singing NEW YORK, NEW YORK with Hoda and Kathy Lee joining in for the finale. FUN CENTERPIECES

Here is a tip for several of the above centerpieces. Place a water tight vase inside your larger vase. Place candy and eggs on the

outside and your floral arrangement inside. You won't need so many goodies this way. The top right grass floral vase is clickable to follow directions. So cute, but labor intensive. I suggest finding silk grass or leaves so that this adorable centerpiece becomes reusable.
WEEKEND PROJECT
COLORING AND DECORATING EGGS
Of course you'll want to dye some eggs in the usual fashion, but how about decorating white eggs, as well as colored ones, with a sharpie pen to create 'People or Critter' eggs and add paste-on' items like google-eyes, sequins, yarn hair, pipecleaners, etc. Put out cups of trimmings, paper, bits of felt, glue and scissors and let the kids have at it at your Easter party! Need ideas? Here are just a few:
MOVIE STAR EGG = Draw sunglasses and red lips with sharpie pens. Glue on yarn hair and add gold stars on the sides for earrings.
FROG EGG = Draw a smiley frog mouth under a pair of google eyes on a green egg.
BLUEBIRD = Same as chick above, but use a blue egg and paste on flying wings cut from blue paper.
VAMPIRE OR VILLAIN = Use a black Sharpie to make triangular eyebrows over black circle eyes on a white egg. Add vampire teeth or a mustache and a mean mouth.
CLOWN = Glue yarn for hair, add google eyes under 'pointy' eyebrows, and a big red mouth.
and MORE EASY CRITTERS = Striped black & yellow Bumble Bee with paper wings, A Colorful Butterfly or a Red Ladybug with black dots and black paper antenna.

NOTE: These are fun to make even if you don't have kids, so invite someone else's children over to help. A stressed mother would probably welcome the help on this busy weekend!

$18,500,000 HOME IN NEWPORT, CA FOR SALE

It's always fun to look at a beautiful home isn't it? Well, this one sitting right on the Pacific Ocean is certainly in that category. Newport is known to be populated with many well known movie stars. We don't know if that's the case here, but you would have to have the income of a movie star to buy it! It always pleases me to see something I can't afford that I wouldn't want anyway, and this is also in that category. Notice the all white furniture in every room.  That always astounds me!  How can people live like that? It certainly isn't compatible with my lifestyle! Interesting nonetheless! Click Here to enjoy the photos!

  DID YOU KNOW?

Although Christians now celebrate it, Easter-Sunday was not observed by the second century Christians in Asia Minor. They celebrated Passover. Jesus specifically mentioned that Christians were to observe the Passover as He did in Luke 22:14-20). The first Christians remembered the death of Jesus with a Pascha (Passover) meal (Eucharist) on the lunar date of the Jewish Passover as referenced in 1 Corinthians 5:7-8). At first there was no annual celebration of the resurrection. Eventually, in the gentile world, the day of resurrection was added to the Passover festival. At the Council of Nicea in 325 A.D., the Roman Emperor Constantine ruled that Easter Sunday would be celebrated on the Sunday immediately following that full moon which came after the vernal equinox. Easter itself is not a Christian term but comes from Estre, the Teutonic goddess of Spring. Since Spring is associated with new life, the term became connected with the resurrection.

  RECIPE OF THE WEEK

EASY EASTER BRUNCH

Slow-Cooker Biscuits and Sausage Gravy

Biscuits and gravy are incredibly easy to make for a crowd when served in a slow cooker. Put this on about an 1 1/2 hours or so before you go to church. By the time you return and have an orange juice or a 'mimosa', it should be about ready!
Ingredients
1lb. bulk pork sausage
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup milk
1 can (10 1/2 oz) low-sodium condensed cream of mushroom soup
1/2 teaspoon fennel seed, crushed
2 cans (12 oz each) Pillsbury® Grands!® Jr. Golden Homestyle refrigerated buttermilk biscuits
Directions
  • In 12-inch nonstick skillet, cook sausage over medium-high heat 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until no longer pink. With slotted spoon, remove sausage from skillet to bowl. Set aside.
  • Add butter to pan drippings in skillet; cook over medium heat until butter is melted. Add flour; cook about 1 minute, stirring constantly with whisk, until no lumps remain. Add milk; cook 2 to 3 minutes, stirring constantly, until mixture is thickened. Remove from heat. Stir in soup, fennel seed and sausage until combined.
  • Spray 3 1/2- to 4-quart slow cooker with cooking spray. Separate each can of dough into 10 biscuits; cut each biscuit into quarters. Arrange biscuit pieces in bottom and up side of slow cooker. Pour sausage mixture into slow cooker. Place triple layer of paper towels on top of ingredients in slow cooker.
  • Cover; cook on Low heat setting 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours 30 minutes or until biscuits are cooked through and deep golden brown around edges. Spoon into bowls to serve.

NOTE:  For a little color and flavor, you can add a few chopped Easter eggs to the mix if you would like and garnish with chopped parsley or chives.
