GREETINGS FROM BOSTON!

No...Not that Boston! I'm at our farm in Boston, Georgia. What??? You didn't know there was a Boston in Georgia?  Actually, not many people do.  It's nothing like the city in Massachusetts.  It's just a small town outside of Thomasville, GA, just a little north of Tallahassee. Our Boston is located in a total of 2.2 square miles with a population of 1,315 according to the 2012 census figures. There are more cows than people here. There are also a lot of cotton and hay fields, and for entertainment the people gather at the 'Boston Main Street Cafe' to converse and catch up on all of the local happenins'. It is truly the 'Mayberry' lifestyle where the day doesn't get started without a cup of coffee and conversation with the locals. The stories that emerge are quite unique and usually provide a good laugh that can be roused once again later in the day as it is retold and passed on. It is enough to sustain the soul until the gang can clusters again the following morning for a fresh dose of local news swap.

I came to Georgia to spend a little time with my daughter Lilly who couldn't take time off to travel to Vero for Easter weekend with her brother and sister who were able to make it home. Lilly is working as the coordinator of the Ritz Kids program at the fabulous Ritz Carlton Resort in Greensboro, GA. If you aren't familiar with it, you might want to check it out if you're planning a vacation this summer  - Golf, tennis, boating  and a lakeside beach with supervised activities for the kids. Expensive, but worth it!

Speaking of summer and kids, I hope you checked out our special camp issue. I really can't believe how many wonderful activities we have for children in Vero, and they seem to increase every year. If you missed it you can click here to peruse our special issue. Can you believe summer is right around the corner?  Hard to believe!

              ADVENTUROUS FLASHERS .... JOIN US!

Hey FLASHERS, I had the idea a couple of weeks ago to form a group of FLASHERS who enjoy exploring and trying new things. I have received quite a nice response and I will be contacting everyone over the weekend to set a convenient time for our first brainstorming session. There is still time if you want to be a part of this core group. Simply send me a reply email and I will get you on our list. If you missed the initial email, here is the excerpt....
This was my thought...There are groups set up for just about everything. There are networking groups, volunteer groups, alumni groups, professional groups, photography groups, book review groups, trivia groups, craft groups, food review groups, there's probably even a group on how to form groups.  I have no doubt that they are all absolutely fabulous. However, I believe the best is yet to come. We don't have to be so limited. What about those of us who like to try new things? Some may call it a severe case of A-D-D. I prefer 'The Adventurous FLASHERS!' Now that's a group! Every week I get emails and phone calls from so many of you for a wide variety of reasons. Some of you are new in town and looking for a way to connect. This is it! Others are engrained in our community and want to share what you know. Again, this is it! I suggest we get together. What fun we can have! If you have the slightest interest...Send me an email. Please include your name, interest, age (if you'd like) and note if you are interested in being a part of the 'founding group' to brainstorm this tremendous idea! I'll plan a fun initial brainstorm party! No need to be shy! In the FLASH world there are no such things as strangers...we are simply friends who haven't met yet! COME JOIN THE FUN THAT"S ABOUT TO EXPLODE!  I feel it!  :)

SHOPPING CODES

I just learned recently that there's  a hidden markdown language used by popular retailers to communicate to employees what items are being discounted. Here's a link to the secret markdown codes at Walmart, Costco, and Target that supposedly only employees and insiders know. It might help you to find some bargains! The last number on the price denotes whether it's the original price, the first markdown or the final price. Pricing doesn't always follow this format as retailers are constantly testing new prices, but to 'crack' the code, Click here.

  CITIZENSHIP TEST

With so much in the news about immigration, we thought you might like to know more about the current requirements for citizenship. Here are the basics:

All applicants are required to take an oral civics test. A government official will ask the applicant a random 10 of the possible 100 civics questions. He/she must answer only 6 out of the 10 questions correctly to pass this portion of the naturalization test. The English language portion of the test has three parts: reading, writing, and speaking. An individual's ability to speak basic English will be determined by the officer conducting the interview. Applicants will be required to read aloud one of three sentences correctly for the reading portion of the exam. Applicants will also be required to write one out of three sentences correctly as well. If you would like to test yourself, here's a link to the study guide of the 100 questions. All of the acceptable answers are given under each question, so you might want someone to read the questions to you. Click Here.

                BLOOD CLOTS

If you're traveling this summer, you should be aware of this danger. The elderly are at greater risk, but anyone traveling more than four hours, whether by air, car, bus, or train, can be at risk for blood clots. Also called deep vein thrombosis (DVT), blood clots can form in the deep veins of your legs that are not visible through the skin because you are sitting still in a confined space for long periods of time. Many times the blood clot will dissolve on its own, but if a part of the blood clot breaks off and travels to the lungs causing a blockage, there can be serious consequences.  This is called a pulmonary embolism, and it may be fatal. The longer you are immobile, even at home or work, the greater is your risk of developing a blood clot, so it's important to get out of your seat and walk every hour or so.  The Surgeon General has these tips for other things you can do to reduce your risk of blood clots. Click here.

USING HIBISCUS IN FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS

Have you noticed how beautiful the hibiscus  are this year?  They are among my favorite flowers, but I didn't know until recently that they could be used as cut flowers. Apparently, because the blooms will last well without water, they are particularly useful for floral arrangements and table decorations. If the blooms are picked early before they open and placed in the crisper of the refrigerator until late afternoon, upon removal they open and last until well after midnight. Many of the modern hybrids are two day flowers and usually last regardless. Hibiscus last longer in the cooler months than they do in the heat of summer. The stems of the flowers can be put into drinking straws or broken off close to the flower, and a wire put into them. These are then arranged in a vase of greenery without water. Another creative idea: Use a  conch shell or a piece of driftwood, a little greenery, and add two or three blooms. I'm going to try this!

FLASH BEAUTY TIP OF THE WEEK

Sponsored by: Center for Facial Aesthetics      banner beauty tip                     Why I Love Hyaluronic Acid

Don't let the word Hyaluronic Acid fool you, it's not harsh or exfoliating at all. In fact it's quite the opposite. Hyaluronic acid is a powerful humectant. Hyaluronic acid is naturally occurring in the human body. Humectants are moisture binding, they keep skin plump and hydrated. The result is more moisture, plumpness and firmness to the skin. Baby skin is a good example of soft and wonderfully dewy skin. The reason is because babies are born with a high level of hyaluronic acid. So sad but true the amount of hyaluronic acid in skin diminishes as we age, most significantly after 40. When you apply Image Skincare's Hyaluronic Acid to your skin immediately feels softer and hydrated. I recommend applying hyaluronic acid before their daily and nightly moisturizer to many of our patients. I use it myself and we all love the results.

GAS PRICE REPORT

I'm sure we've all noticed that gas is going up. Last weekend, the average in Florida was $3.80. That's still below the record high in our state of $4.03 on July 7, 2008, but we know it usually rises in summer. Traditionally, Saturday is usually the cheapest day to buy gas in Florida. At the Gas Buddy website, you'll find a lot of information about gas and can keep an eye on the current prices in each state if you're planning a summer road trip. Click here. GasBuddy also has an app that you can download. It will find the cheapest gas near you.  Not a bad thing to find out with the prices fluctuating so drastically from block to block. Have fun saving!

CURIOUS FACT

It's no great surprise that more plastic surgery is performed in the U.S. than any other country, but guess what's second? Mexico! Overall, the average facelift in the U.S costs $11,075 (and that doesn't include eyes). Hmmm. So, now you know.

                             WEEKEND PROJECT
Here is a fun project that will have you creating a springtime/summertime door decoration while enjoying our wonderful weather while taking leisurely walks on the beach to collect seashells.  You can purchase a large cut out letter from Michaels or you can enlist the craftsmanship of a local woodcrafter to cut out a font letter of your choice. Once you have your cut out, glue on a layer of sand. Now the fun comes when you hot glue your beach treasures to your letter. Topped with a burlap bow, all that is left to do is hang and ENJOY!

  TODAY'S CHUCKLE

 .e

An old man was walking in the park when all of a sudden he heard a frog speak up.

FROG: Excuse me sir.  I am a beautiful princess locked inside this frog.  All it takes is one kiss to release me and I will grant your wildest fantasy.

With that the man scoops up the frog and sticks it in his

                                        pocket.

FROG: Excuse me sir. Did you hear me?  Kiss me and I will be released and will grant you your fantasy.

The old man looks into his pocket to reply to the frog.

OLD MAN:  I did hear you. But, at my age I think I will opt for a talking frog!

                            FLASH TIP OF THE WEEK
Have you ever wondered about the difference between parchment paper and wax paper? According to the Reynolds.com site, the main difference is the coatings which have precisely different uses.

Parchment paper is coated with silicone allowing it to be nonstick, heat-resistant. You can use it up 420 degrees. So this is good for lining a cookie tray when baking.

Wax paper is coated with wax. DO NOT put wax paper in the oven or expose it to any type of direct heat. You can use it to wrap food, cool chocolate covered treats without sticking, keep moisture from penetrating things or shine up chrome (such as your kitchen faucet). Now that was something I didn't know! :)

  DID YOU KNOW

There are an estimated 1.6 billion Muslims , roughly 23% of the world population, making Islam the world's second-largest religious tradition after Christianity, with 32%. These figures are from the December 2012 Global Religious Landscape report from the Pew Research Center's Forum on Religion & Public Life. Although many people associate Islam with countries in the Middle East or North Africa, nearly two-thirds (62%) of Muslims live in the Asia-Pacific region, according to the Pew Research analysis. In fact, more Muslims live in India and Pakistan than in the entire Middle East-North Africa region.

Following the death of her husband in 2002, she created two series of wood folding screens titled "Contemporary Mythologies" and "Subjective Mythologies," each combining representational illusion with penetrating emotion. Borrowing from the design principles of Asian folding screens, Kennington painted both sides of each screen as complementary halves of a single idea.
