editor's note poka-dotHello FLASHERS~

Oh my goodness....It's May! This Saturday is the Kentucky Derby...one of our family's favorite events. Traditionally we gather our family and friends around the TV for a supper of  'picked-up' fried chicken (with all the fixins') to watch the race. We encourage wearing outrageous hats and ask everyone to bring a dollar or two to put in our 'winner's pot'. We draw the horses' names, so the one who gets the favorite is simply the luck of the draw. We have to be sure there are enough names so everyone can get a 'ticket.'  This year there are 23 horses scheduled to run, so we'll limit our guests to that number or less. Couples may  want to share a ticket, or someone may want to buy two. If you would like to plan your own party, check out our Derby post below. If you just want to join the fun of a Derby without the work, head over to Blue Star Wine Bar. There is a lot of fun planned and 10% of the evening's proceeds will go to benefit Special Equestrians. You are encouraged to wear your Derby Best. There will be a Derby Hat contest.  The fun begins at 5:00.

The Derby isn't the only thing going on. Tonight our new 'Adventurous FLASHERS' group will meet for the first time at Cobalt at 5:30 around the fire pit. Click here to send me an email if you would like to join us. Other fun things you might want to check out include the Comedy Zone at Riverside on Friday and Saturday, Free admission day is Saturday at the Environmental Learning Center, the last juried craft show of the season at Riverview Park in Sebastian on Saturday and on Sunday you won't want to miss the May Pops concert at Windsor. If you have children, you will want to take them to the Youth For Life Camp open house on Sunday to get your first dose of summertime fun! Check the Community Calendar listing below for event details and other exciting things going on around town. Enjoy your weekend FLASHERS!

THE 140th KENTUCKY DERBY

"THE RUN FOR THE ROSES"

Saturday, May 3rd

It's hard to imagine that the first Kentucky Derby race was held in 1875 with 10,000 attending. Last year's attendance was 164,858. To put that in perspective, 71,024 attended the Super Bowl last year! NBC will cover this year's race  beginning at 4 p.m., with post time scheduled for 6:24 PM. For more information, including the line-up of horses, party plans and recipes, visit the official Derby website. Click here.

   WHAT DOCTORS EARNED IN 2013

We all know the practice of medicine is changing, but the old joke about wanting a 'daughter to marry a doctor' may still have some merit. This report from WEB MD is an excellent review on the practice of medicine today. The top earning specialties in order are: Orthopedics ($413,000), cardiology ($351,000), urology ($348,000), gastroenterology ($348,000), and radiology ($340,000). This sounds like a lot of money until you deduct the very high cost of their overhead, including rent, staff salaries, equipment, medical supplies, and very costly insurance. Those who are self-employed earned an average of $281,000 compared with employed doctors, who earned $228,000. In primary care, the difference was smaller: self-employed doctors earned $188,000 and employed ones earned $180,000. Employed doctors are those who work for hospitals, universities, some clinics, etc, so they don't have the overhead expenses of self employed doctors. Today, over one half of all US physicians are employed. The report from WEB MD has other interesting information like average time spent with patients and percentage of doctors who would choose medicine as a career again today.   BAN ON IVORY

In February of this year, President Obama signed an executive order banning the sale, resale, import, export, and even donation of objects made of ivory or partially of ivory that are less than 100 years old. To read the report from antique experts the Kovels, Click Here.

FLASH BEAUTY TIP OF THE WEEK

Sponsored by: Center for Facial Aesthetics       banner beauty tip

Because keeping your skin clean and healthy is more important than any cream, serum, or makeup you can put on it, the Clarisonic Sonic Cleansing System is one of the most recommended beauty products in the industry. While manual cleaning often leaves behind dirt and makeup that can get trapped in your pores, the Clarisonic uses a patented sonic frequency, unlike any other on the market, of more than 300 movements per second to gently, yet thoroughly, remove 6X more makeup and 2X more dirt and oil than cleansing with your hands alone. Used professionally by spas and dermatologists, this dream machine reduces pores, oily skin, dry skin patches, and blemishes and is gentle enough to use twice a day. And best of all, with such a sparkling clean visage to work on, all of your facial creams and potions will be able to work their best. We believe no woman, who is serious about her skin's health and beauty, should be without a Clarisonic. Right now when you by a Clarisonic Mia 2 for $149 you get a Free Facial!

MOVING TIPS
Whether it's across country or just across town, summer is the busiest time for moving. If you're among those who will be moving this summer,  we found a website that has some excellent packing  tips. (Who knew you could pack wine glasses in socks?) Click here.

HEALTH TIP

ALLERGIES & ASTHMA

About a third of people with allergic asthma are triggered by cat dander. But if you're one of them, you may not have to give up a home with cats and other pets. While there are no truly allergy-free dogs or cats, some breeds can be easier to live with. "Low-allergen" dogs include the Poodle, Bichon Frise, and Maltese. Some people have good luck with Devon Rex cats. Strangely, two cats may be too many for some people, but one cat in the house may be no problem. Web MD has an excellent Asthma Survival Guide for Allergy Season. To read, Click Here.
WEEKEND PROJECT

I found these fun spoons on Wecreaterainbows. How much fun to pick up some inexpensive wooden spoons to transform. You can probably even get them at the dollar store. Then just tape off a design and get painting. It would be best to find a non flammable paint. The spoons pictured were created with spray paint and sealed with a non toxic sealant. It is suggested that you do not use near an open flame, unless the materials you use to decorate are all natural or flame retardant. Once you have painted your utensils, peel off the tape right before the paint is completely dry. This should help keep the paint from peeling. Keep a stash to give as hostess gifts. These colorful utensils will certainly serve up a heap of fun!

  FLASH TIP OF THE WEEK
PENNIES KEEP YOUR BIRDBATH CLEAN
Another tip from antique experts, the Korvels. You can keep your birdbath clear of algae if you put a few pre-1982 pennies in the water. Pennies from those years had a higher copper content and copper discourages algae. Who knows?...Your friends might even toss in more coins thinking you have a wishing well :) Think that's how the make a wish and throw a penny in the fountain got started?  Hmmmm....
  FLASH VIDEO OF THE WEEK
JIMMY FALLON'S SNL AUDITION

This 8 minute video is a very young Jimmy Fallon's  original audition for Saturday Night Live. It shows his remarkable talent for celebrity imitations. No wonder he got the job! Click here.

DID YOU KNOW?

100 years ago there were less than 20,000 motorcars in the whole world, a lot of them being electric cars. The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph. There are about 1 billion cars and light trucks on the road today, half of them in the United States. The maximum speed limit within most major cities is 30 mph, yet the traffic is so congested at peak times that the average speed is just over 10 mph. So, electric cars and 10 mph speed...I guess it's true that what goes around
does come around!

  RECIPE OF THE WEEK

This type of pie is traditionally served at the annual Kentucky Derby. The  recipe is similar to the Melrose Inn's famous version which has been served at the racetrack for over 50 years, but you can't legally call it a "Derby Pie" recipe. The name "Derby Pie" is trademarked, and the owners of the name are very aggressive about protecting the name "Derby Pie."

 KENTUCKY BOURBON CHOCOLATE WALNUT PIE

  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 cup melted butter
  • 2 tablespoons Kentucky bourbon
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1 1/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 ready-made piecrust
Preparation:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Combine flour and sugar in a mixing bowl. Add the eggs and butter; mix to combine. Stir in the bourbon, walnuts, chocolate chips, vanilla, and salt. Pour the mixture into the unbaked piecrust. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes. Let cool before slicing.

The Exchange Club of Sebastian is proud to honor the 2014 ACE Award winners, Matt Patti and runner-up Leslie Hernandez, both attending Sebastian River High School.  The ACE (Accepting the Challenge of Excellence) Award program recognizes high school students who have made a dramatic change in their attitude and performance during their high school years. These changes have enabled the students to overcome adversities and prepare for graduation. This is a positive program that encourages students to overcome their hardships and get back on track toward a high school diploma.

The Sebastian Exchange Club is proud to announce the prestigious Youth of the Year Award winners, Alexander Perez-Ciudad and Micaeyla Martinelli.  Exchange Clubs across America honor outstanding students in the community who have exhibited excellence in academics and leadership. Both of these outstanding students were honored previously as Students of the Month from Sebastian River High School and submitted essays that won the competition for Youth of the Year.  They will compete for the District title with other youth at the Exchange Club's Florida District Convention in Orlando at the end of May and from there perhaps compete at the national level.  This youth program not only enhances career opportunities for those honored, it also promotes good citizenship, a desire for greater scholastic achievement, and the development of well-rounded personalities to other young adults in the community.

Following the death of her husband in 2002, she created two series of wood folding screens titled "Contemporary Mythologies" and "Subjective Mythologies," each combining representational illusion with penetrating emotion. Borrowing from the design principles of Asian folding screens, Kennington painted both sides of each screen as complementary halves of a single idea. These unique works of art by one of the South's most prominent female artists will make a lasting impression.
