HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY, FLASHERS!

Hopefully, you either are a mother or have a mother to celebrate with this Sunday, but being someone's aunt counts too.  I look back to before my sister had a child of her own, and I don't know what I would have done without her! Motherhood has been the great joy of my life and given me excuses to do some things that I would have looked pretty silly doing by myself,...Like going to the park and swinging with my kids when they were little. (I love to swing, but it's not an approved activity for an adult to do alone in a children's playground!) We also used to pack our lunch last minute and go eat by the duck pond  in the park, sharing our leftover crusts with the ducks. I also loved coloring books with them - and teaching them how to stay in the lines. Now that my kids are grown, I miss helping them dress up for Halloween, - and yes, I miss the candy they used to  bring home too! I still look forward to filling Easter baskets and Christmas stockings for them. Most of the ingredients have become more sophisticated, but I still slip in a couple of reminders from the past, - like soap bubbles, (Who doesn't like soap bubbles?)

This weekend I will again be heading back to our farm in Georgia where my husband and I hope one or more of our three children will join us for Mother's Day.  All three of my adult "babies" are living and working in the Peachtree State, and each of them has complained about the weather and grey days this past winter. I love to remind them how sunny and beautiful it usually is here in Vero, hoping they might be tempted to move back one of these days. None of my three are married yet, and I'll be excited when that time comes.  I can't wait to be a grandmother when the fun will start all over again! If you don't have children of your own, consider helping out a young mother occasionally by "borrowing" her children.  She would probably welcome a break and you may be surprised at how much fun you can have. You might also want to consider being a mentor with Youth Guidance or a Big Sister or Big Brother.  I have been a mentor with Youth Guidance and it is such a wonderful program. A definite win-win situation. Give it some thought. You'll be glad you did as you impact the life of one of our youth and surprise...You'll impact yours as well.

Make sure to check out the calendar for the upcoming week. We have the spectacular Blue Angels at the Vero Beach Air Show on Saturday and Sunday. The Sunset Saturday Night Concert this Saturday,  and a couple of great performance at both Indian River Charter High School and Vero Beach High School.

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY TO MY MOM!

Suzie Claughton Schmidt

This picture was taken of me and Mom when we were celebrating her Saint Patrick's Day Birthday at Cobalt this year. I know our FLASHERS think 'Their Mom' is the BEST...As you should. But, I'll put my Mom up against the BEST any day!  She is my rock, my inspiration, my entertainment guide, My turn to gal, and most of all my friend that is always up for anything! She is smart as a whip and is my researcher guru that finds many of our 'bits of info' for FLASH. She is the mother to 5 girls, is a 10+ year lung cancer survivor and is now a two time survivor of colon cancer. We moved her up to Vero this past fall; leaving behind 'her' Miami.  It was once a small town where she and her parents certainly left their mark!

I have sincerely never seen my mother 'down'. I guess I could add that she is my personal Molly Brown. (If you don't know the movie The Unsinkable Molly Brown...it's a must see!) Lessons she's taught us girls?  Many!  Here are a few that I now share and give ownership to any FLASHER who would like to live the 'happy life'!

1) Always hold to your faith and live accordingly.

2) You can do anything you set your mind to. 'The little engine that could' I think I

    can, I think I can.

3) Always stand up for what you believe. Write a letter when necessary.  'The

only thing evil needs to succeed is for good men to do nothing at all.'

3) Laugh every day...And don't forget to laugh at yourself when necessary!

4) Never ever throw a pity party...instead go find and help someone worse off

than you. It's amazing how much better you will feel

5) Time spent worrying is time wasted!

6) Never stop learning and growing....and ALWAYS find time for FUN!

7) Help others, take time to volunteer, be a good friend and be kind!

8) Don't use foul language. It makes you seem ignorant and it makes no sense. If

you substitute the actual meaning of the word.... well try it. You'll see what she

    means. :) 'Be classy'

9) Throw a party and entertain. It's important. And don't forget the Campbell's

mushroom soup.... (A family ongoing joke..It will make her laugh.)

DRUM ROLL...... #10

10) If you see a problem ... be the solution!

So, there you have it. Life's lessons in a nutshell that have served me oh so well! I only hope I can be half the mom to my kids as my Mom has been to me!

Love you Sunshine!  (That's what her grandchildren call her) and Happy Mother's Day to all of our FLASH Moms!

SEASONAL SALES

The Bible tells us in Ecclesiastes 3:1 that "To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under the heaven." Apparently this also includes 'the best time to buy certain items.' I think we all know that the best time to buy holiday decorations is the day after the holiday-( if you have storage space for a year), but according to this site, some items may be less expensive during certain seasons. What You Should Know About Wrinkle Fillers
Injectable wrinkle fillers can give you a more youthful look for a fraction of what a traditional face lift costs. Most will fill lines and wrinkles in less than 30 minutes with results that can last from four months to more than a year. Injectable wrinkle fillers, unlike Botox injections that relax the muscle under a wrinkle, fill the line or crease with one of several different substances. As a result, the line or crease seems to have nearly disappeared. Call for a complimentary consultation to find out if fillers are right for you! Center for Facial Aesthetics in Sebastian, 772-589-8111!
On Saturday, May 10th, Indian River Charter High School's Schumann School for the Visual and Performing Arts will host, Cosmic Journey:2014, a musical presentation featuring Martha Lemasters, which will highlight her time as a writer for IBM during the NASA Apollo Program. Lemaseters behind the scenes story of Apollo 11 and the moon landing will be infused with contemporary works performed by the IRCHS students.

  QUICK PIMPLE FIX!

Prom time? Graduation? Teens have a lot of special events coming up, and it's not a good time to get a zit! Most teens' skin problems are caused by changing hormones, but there's not a man or woman alive who hasn't had to deal with the problem, because stress can cause it too. Consequently pimples often erupt just before a Big Day. Weddings, job interviews or any stressful situation -- happy or sad -- can send stress hormones soaring.  Here are four possible plans to help the breakout before the big day.  Click here.

FLASH CHUCKLE

A worried-looking man in a florist shop asked for three potted geraniums. "I'm sorry," said the clerk. "We're out of geraniums right now, but we have some nice potted chrysanthemums."  "No, they won't do", replied the man. "I promised my wife I'd water her geraniums while she was away."

FLASH TIP OF THE WEEK
TRY WALKING IN PLACE
We all know that walking is one of the best forms of exercise, but did you know that walking in place in your bedroom is almost as effective as walking outside? On those rainy days when you want to stay inside, you can even walk in place while catching up on your favorite show!   According to a research study published in the February 2012 issue of the journal "Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise," walking in place burns an average of 258 calories per hour, compared to 304 calories walking on a treadmill. You won't need any special equipment, just comfortable clothes and good shoes.  The study suggested that you practice interval training to improve your stamina which requires you to cycle through walking at high- and low-intensity paces. For example, the article suggests that you walk in place at a comfortable pace for 90 seconds, then walk as fast as you can, lifting your knees high, for 60 seconds. Repeat this cycle until the completion of your workout. Lifting your knees? Isn't that marching? I can do that...A little marching music please!

THE FASTEST AND SLOWEST URBAN SPEED LIMITS

You have no doubt heard that the speed limit on Florida highways would increase from 70 to 75 mph on certain highways under a bill the House recently passed.  The measure narrowly passed on a 58-56 vote, despite arguments that it could lead to more deaths. It now goes to Governor Rick Scott. Some fear that many already drive at that speed and would continue to drive 5 to 10 miles over the new speed. If you would like to express your opinion to the Governor, you will find contact info at this link, along with other interesting links for requests.

NOTE: If your opinion is sent by e-mail, it can be read by the general public and your e-mail becomes accessible to all!

Here's how Florida speeds compare with other states:
