I was returning on Monday from my Mother's Day road trip to our Georgia farm when my warning 'battery discharging' light came on in Ocala. Yep! I needed a new alternator and I would have a 3-1/2 hour delay in this beautiful town. Just me and my dog, Tucker. To pass the time, Tuck and I decided to head out on foot to explore. So, I got some exercise in. Another positive from our delay...It gave me time to think about what I wanted to say this week in my editor's note. Ocala was the perfect spot to formulate the message. Vero has painted turtles. Ocala? Painted horses! Which just happens to fit perfectly this week because of The Preakness. So, here's your reminder. The 139th running of the Preakness at the Pimlico track in Maryland will be this Saturday. The Preakness is the second round in the race for the Triple Crown which is comprised of 3 races, the Kentucky Derby, The Preakness and ends with the Belmont Stakes on June 8th in Long Island, New York,. Since 1919, only 11 horses have won all three races and there have been none since 1978, but this could be the year. All eyes will be on the amazing horse, California Chrome, who easily won his last five races, including the recent Kentucky Derby. California Chrome will break from the No. 3 post, which has produced 10 winners in the previous 138 runnings of the 1 3/16-mile race. There were 20 horses in the Derby and only 10 will be running in the Preakness, so it should be fun to watch. NBC coverage of the race begins at 4:30 PM with post time at 6:18 PM. It's not too late to plan a get-together, so be sure to check out our special Preakness recipes in a post below.
Saturday will be a special day for kids too! A post below has all the info on the KIDS' BLAST which will go on all day Saturday at Riverside Park. And while you're there, be sure to visit Christi's Dance Floor. Christi's will be collecting both adult and children's gently used shoes for the less fortunate in our community.
Enjoy your weekend. Flashers and remember that minor inconveniences can provide the perfect opportunity for a lesson, time to catch your breath, or a chance to explore and learn something new. Those setbacks can transform into moments worth remembering. (By the way...Ocala has water fountains for dogs! Who would have thought? Tuck appreciated it greatly! :)

Chris Gorges likes to read crowds. He has the ability to relate to his audience with a wide range of material. His interactive style gets the crowd going and Chris never misses a beat. With a strong background in IMPROV, his act can be anything! CHRIS GORGES is a true versatile comic. As an extra bonus, every once in awhile, he'll throw in some physical comedy too. He's all about getting some serious laughs and brings tons of experience to the stage from every stage in his life.
Jose Sarduy was born in a little town in Cuba called Victoria de las Tunas in 1977. About a quarter of his family immigrated to the U.S. in 1980 during the large boatlift from the Port of Mariel (depicted in Oliver Stone's feature film, Scarface). They received this "option" due to his father's status as a political prisoner having served 7 years in prison for writing an "anti-communist" letter and posting it on a school bulletin board.
He went on to graduate from the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO, eventually becoming an Air Force pilot. He flew C-141's, a cargo plane, out of New Jersey and it was there that his other passion, comedy, took hold. He went beyond just telling other people's jokes at bars and started writing and telling his own at comedy clubs.
Stripes marched onto the decorating scene in a big way a while back. However, You'd be mistaken if you think they are just for walls. Here are a few photos that show them reaching new heights as they embellish and bring life to what is often a forgotten part of a room...The ceiling. That can certainly liven up a room! HATS
OF THE KENTUCKY DERBY
As you probably know, the Derby is almost as famous for the ladies' hats as it is for the horses. Here's a fun slide show of the most elaborate ones spotted at this year's race. It seems the men are getting into the act too!
I know that FLASH has a fair share of typos from week to week and I apologize. For those who look past them...thank you! For those who email us and keep us on our toes...We thank you too! (Just not as much as those who overlook them. Oh, calm down now...I'm only kidding. You can email us any time!) Anyway, you may have seen this before, but I thought it would be fun to put in FLASH. It makes me feel better because I was able to read it and I can guarantee you that it has a great deal more errors than we do! I now have a new and profound hope that you can all make it through FLASH week in and week out! :)
MANAGING SEVERE ALLERGIES
Since a couple of my children have severe allergies, I always make sure that they have an epinephrine pen handy in case of an emergency. In children, the most common food allergies are to milk, eggs, wheat, fish, soy and peanuts. In adults, food allergies are most often caused by fish, shellfish (including lobster, crab, and crayfish), stone friuts (peaches, plums, cherries, apricots) nuts and seeds and again peanuts. PAINTED ROCKS
This is an inexpensive and fun way to spend some free time. Children and adults can get
hooked for hours. Let you imagination loose and start creating. You can drop some of the finished pieces in your garden, on your
doorstep,... I even saw some displayed under a glass globe on a bed of green moss while in Georgia this past week. The beach is a great place to find some smooth pebbles. Then all you need is some acrylic paint and varnish! ENJOY creating!
Our family loves to watch the Friday night ABC show 'SHARK TANK' where inventors submit their ideas to a group of potential millionaire investors. Haven't we all dreamed about inventing something at some point in our lives? Here's a video that shows the most successful 'SHARK TANK' product to date with investor and QVC queen Lori Greiner. Would you believe that it's the SCRUB DADDY no scratch pot scrubber sponge? Check out the other 'Shark
Tank' videos at the site on the sidebar to the right. It just might inspire you to invent something! Click here.

The baseball great, George Herman (Babe) Ruth, Jr., was born in 1895 in Maryland and was the eldest of eight children born to a Baltimore bartender and his wife. They had no time for their son, and when he was seven they placed him in St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys, a combination orphanage and reform school. They even signed over custody to the Brothers who ran the institution. It was there that Babe met Brother Matthias, who taught him how to play baseball.
