Happy Thursday, FLASHERS!
This is the time of year when schools around the country try to out-do each other by capturing a prominent speaker for their graduation services. Two that have already delivered their advice at their respective alma maters are Secretary of State, John Kerry speaking at Yale and Sean Combs (AKA/ Puff Daddy) at Howard University who told the graduates, "Nobody is going to invite you to the front of the line, you got to push your way to the front of the line." (I hope the students don't take him literally!) Oscar-winning actress and all-round likable lady Sandra Bullock spoke at Warren Easton Charter High School
in New Orleans, the school she donated funds to after it was damaged by Hurricane Katrina. She had plenty of wisdom to impart, about "finding what makes you happy" and "not being afraid of the unknown," to a final reminder "not to pick your nose in public!" Jay Leno told the graduates at Emerson College to "Work hard." Remember, anybody can have a life. Careers are hard to come by." Others stepping up to the mic this month are Good Morning America's, George Stephanopoulos at Marshall University and Katie Couric at Trinity College.
Perhaps the most popular speaker of all is Oprah Winfrey who will be speaking at Vassar College. I still remember a quote from her speech at Harvard last year: " Everyone wants to be validated.....inevitably at the end of an interview, everyone in their own way asks..."Was that okay?" Apparently, even major celebrities can be insecure and need to be reassured. I think that's good to remember in our dealings with people, whether it's our child or our boss. Everyone likes to be told that they are doing a good job! Spread the good cheer and pat someone on the back today. We have plenty of local young people getting ready to graduate and pass to that next stage while others who transitioned a few years ago are getting ready to launch into the real world. Tell them they've 'done good!' Make sure you check out our graduation gift ideas below and be sure to watch the graduation speech by a Navy seal in our Video of the Week.
Other features this week include posts on
Memorial Day.
There is no doubt that we cannot thank our military enough. Especially those we honor this Memorial Day (along with their families)...The ones who paid the ultimate sacrifice! They deserve SO much more than a pat on the back and a 'done good' comment. If you have a Father or Mother, Son, Daughter, or friend in the military...PLEASE send us a photo so that we can feature him/her in FLASH. We would love to do so! If you want to feel the power and love of a very special group of ladies...Stop by the Military Moms Prayer group tonight at 5:00. They meet every Thursday at Christ Church behind Outback. Why not stop in and say THANK YOU!

LYNN MARIE SAINT-VINCENT
IS A POSITIVE PERSON
As our thoughts turn to Memorial Day and the men and women whose sacrifices have made our freedoms possible, it's also a good time to recognize those positive people who work behind the scenes every day to make sure our troops are not forgotten.
One of those people is Lynn Marie Saint-Vincent, Outreach Coordinator of the Military Moms Prayer Group. The mother of two military sons, Austin, 24, a Navy veteran who served on submarines for seven years, and Bryce, 21, a newly minted Air Force Airman First Class, Lynn Marie might be called a "Military Mom Extraordinaire." As the prayer group's Outreach Coordinator, she organizes the group's drives to send packages to the troops at Christmas and Valentine's Day. Throughout the year, she spearheads the prayer group's booths at such community events as the Vero Beach Air Show and the National Navy-UDT SEAL Museum's Annual Muster. She also networks with community groups big and small to support their efforts to send packages to the troops.
What's more, Lynn Marie is a key player on the Veteran's Council of Indian River County, an umbrella organization serving all veterans in the area. On Fridays, she can be found at the Victory Center, the Council's storefront at the Indian River Mall near Macy's, where she's one of the volunteer managers. On Memorial Day, you'll find her on stage at Memorial Island, as an emcee and one of the organizers of what promises to be Vero Beach's biggest Memorial Day tribute ever. Starting at 8:50 A.M., Monday, May 26, a double ceremony will honor our fallen and celebrate the 50th anniversary of Memorial Island. Honored guests include Gold Star mother Michelle Dale and Blue Star mothers Sharon Laughlin and Suzanne Carter, along with Memorial Island founder Alma Lee Loy. The event, sponsored by the Veteran's Council, will open with a Star-spangled parade of color guards and bands and close with bag-pipes, TAPS and a special touch conceived by Lynn Marie: a 50th birthday cake for Memorial Island.
What drives Lynn Marie's dedication? "Supporting our veterans and our troops is a mission dear to my heart, because it directly impacts my family and my sons," she says. "Through the Military Moms Prayer Group and the Veteran's Council, I've learned so much about our veterans' hidden scars and also about the struggles of those who are deployed. Many of our troops don't get packages or even letters from home, and I like to think that the small part I'm playing is making a difference in their lives."

SOARING HIGH WITH THE BLUE ANGELS
By: Junior Correspondent - Amanda Gard
The weekend before last I had the amazing opportunity to attend the Vero Beach Air Show featuring the world renowned Blue Angels. As a junior FLASH correspondent I was even allowed into the media tent which was also an experience. The Friday before the show, representatives from the Blue Angels, including the pilot of their supply plane (called "Fat Albert") came to speak to students at Indian River Charter High School. This made being at the air show even more fascinating knowing who was flying Fat Albert when it took off at the beginning of the Blue Angel segment of the show.
Being on the side of the runway made it possible to hear all of the commentary by the MC. I am sorry the people who did not actually pay to go onto the airport grounds were unable to hear the announcer or see the activity on the runway. They missed so much! The jet powered truck racing against the prop planes should not have been missed. The tidbits of information the officer gave during the Blue Angels performance was just as incredible as seeing the Blue Angel Diamond thundering above. An example is when the officer pilot answered one of the most asked questions.... "How do they fly so close together?" He said that they use a special 40 lb spring that allows the plane to avoid being in the neutral zone by allowing greater control over the plane and thus permitting the tight flight patterns. Got that? Hearing the officer talk about the speeds of the jets, the gravity forces the pilots would be subjected to, and knowing what direction to watch for the next maneuver made the show so enjoyable. It was also quite funny when they demonstrated the stealth nature of these planes by directing our attention one way to only have us quite startled when the two solo pilots swooped low over us, coming from behind. It was incredible how you could not hear them until they were atop you. The sudden, deafening roar made us jump! How lucky Vero is to have had the Air Show in our own backyard as one of only 35 performances in 2014. We owe a huge thank you to the Exchange Club of Indian River for organizing such a phenomenal event. All show proceeds benefit Exchange Club for child abuse prevention and the Veterans Council. Seeing these majestic planes fly overhead leaves you in awe and feeling quite patriotic! We get to feel that patriotism again this Memorial Day weekend as we once again remember the commitment, hard work, and sacrifice of our military! God Bless America!

FLASH BEAUTY TIP OF THE WEEK
Sponsored by: Center for Facial Aesthetics
NEVER GO TO BED
WITHOUT FIRST REMOVING YOUR MAKEUP
It is so tempting to just walk in the bedroom and fall into bed thinking 'I'm dead beat, so I'll wash my face in the morning. No matter how tired you are and how tempting this is, keep in mind makeup of any form deprives your skin of the necessary oxygen, and all that foundation, powder and primer since morning will clog your pores, causing blackheads and blemishes. In addition, it is not just the makeup but a whole day's worth of oil, dirt and sweat that has already accumulated on your skin. Who wants to sleep with all of that?

FLASH TIP OF THE WEEK
FROSTING TIP
The prepared cake frosting that you find on the bakery aisle will almost double in size if you beat it with an electric beater. Since the mixture will be lighter and fluffier, it should be easier to spread and go almost twice as far.

FUN SUMMER CANOE OUTINGS
STARTING THIS WEEKEND
Educational, full of discovery, and relaxing is how participants describe their canoe excursions on the Indian River Lagoon with the Environmental Learning Center (ELC). These excursions are led by experienced guides who explore "off the beaten path" canoe trails. In addition to seeing wonderful scenery, including multiple bird species, fish rising from the water, and various kinds of native vegetation, dolphins and manatees may be seen in their natural habitat. A canoe excursion is one of the best ways to explore this environment in a close-up way.

Beginning May 24, 2014 these excursions are scheduled the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month through August. They are early morning trips, from 8:00 to 10:30 am, so that participants can enjoy cool summer breezes. The guides will explain ways that the participants can positively impact the ecology of the Lagoon. The fee, including canoe rental and gear, is only $15 per adult and $7 per child ($3 less for ELC Members and their children). Reservations and information inquiries may be made by calling the ELC at (772) 589-5050 ext.101. |

DID YOU KNOW?
Our portion sizes are increasing big time! Did you know that 20 years ago a typical muffin was 1.5 ounces and 210 calories? Today it's 4 ounces and 500 calories. Two slices of pepperoni pizza used to be 500 calories. Now they're 850!
NOTE: This information comes from the link on weight loss tips that you will find below.

FLASH VIDEO OF THE WEEK
GRADUATION SPEECH BY NAVY SEAL
During a commencement speech at the University of Texas, U.S. Navy Adm. William H. McCraven, the commander of the forces that organized the raid to kill Osama bin Laden, delivered some key advice on success starting with, "If you want to change the world, first make your bed." This video is almost 20 minutes long. If you don't have time to listen to the entire speech, watch the first 5 minutes to hear why you should make the bed. His advice is excellent. You may want your children to watch the entire video with you!

Last weekend the Buggy Bunch ladies organized an incredible Kids BLAST event! With everything so well organized, you never felt the crunch of a crowd of thousands! FLASH had a tent and we wowed the kids with our 'Magic FLASH Goo'. You could hear the echoing question...Is it a solid or a liquid? If you have never played with a mixture of cornstarch and water. It is a must...Yes! Even for you adults. As long as you are working the matter and rolling it into a ball the mixture is a solid. The second you stop manipulating it, it turns into a runny liquid that looks like milk. Try it! You too will be as amazed as those pictured here! :)

Each year, The Original Welcome Wagon Club of Sebastian holds two major fundraising events. Proceeds from both events are given to local non-profits and for scholarships to Sebastian River High School seniors. The Club awarded $1,000 scholarships to four seniors at the high school awards ceremony in April. The club also raised funds which allowed them to present $500 checks at their May luncheon to the following organizations that were voted on by the members: Jenny Ernshaw, Ecumenical Food Pantry; Margaret Wall, Halo Animal Shelter; April Hargett, IRC Volunteer Ambulance Squad; Geny Canello, Safe Space and Cam Bowers, The Lord's Table.

Plastic Surgeon, Alan Durkin, M.D., Takes Highest Fundraiser Award
In Dancing with Vero's Stars
In 2008 when Dancing with Vero's Stars debuted at the Elks Lodge and raised $35,000 for the IRC Healthy Start Coalition, the committee, as well as the dancers and instructors, were elated with the results. Now in its sixth year, the event raised $308,000 and was held at the biggest venue in Vero Beach, Riverside Theatre. It has certainly become an event to "reckon" with, raising over a million dollars in the past six years for the Indian River County Healthy Start Coalition. The funds will enable Healthy Start to continue to offer programs to insure that every pregnant woman & their young children receive necessary healthcare and support services.
Without a doubt, Alan Durkin, M.D. pushed the committee's goal to new heights this year by being the highest fundraiser with a total of $67,000. In doing so, he unseated the reigning highest fundraiser, Glenn Tremml M.D., who earned $53,000 in 2012. Durkin is now the proud owner of the Highest Fundraiser trophy and will retain that trophy until such time some future star dancer earns even more dollars. Adding to his success, Durkin, along with partner Beth Shestak, landed the first runner-up spot in the competition, receiving participation awards and armfuls of congratulatory flowers.
