 Happy Thursday FLASHERS!
Welcome to the last weekend in May! Can you believe that? Seems like only yesterday we were welcoming in 2014 and now we are nearly half way through what was the beginning of a new year. I won't ask how those New Year resolutions are coming. YIKES! Not to worry! You still have time to get back on track. Keep in mind a 'saying to live by' that I always tell my kids. If you don't give up you will eventually succeed! Keep your eye on the prize and DON'T be a quitter! So...Keep on going FLASHERS with success in your view!
Success often requires that we pause to reflect, revise and renew! That is something that I have in sight for FLASH this summer while we enjoy the slower months. With that in mind, we are going to go to a bi-monthly newsletter this summer. Brush those tears out of your eyes. We will be back weekly ... not to worry! We just want to free up some time while things are slower to explore various programs that I believe will help us become a bit more efficient with our time management. I also want to explore possibilities and ideas to keep FLASH new and fresh. Of course we always strive to be what our FLASHERS want us to be. To help us achieve that you will be receiving a FLASH questionnaire next week. Your response will be critical and will help us keep our eye on the prize! What prize? ...To continue to be your local, fun read on everything about anything. To continue to bring fun, laughter and fulfillment to your world! Please take the time to add your 'two cents' when you receive the survey.
While we reflect, revise and renew, we will continue to keep you current on everything going on in town. There is still much to enjoy! Make sure you check out the calendar for your next fun thing to do. Why not head to the "Comedy Zone" this weekend and you can stay informed by visiting the hurricane Expo at the Mall on Saturday. (Stop by our table and say hi!) Keep the emails coming, FLASHERS and always let me know what's on your mind! I love the feedback. I actually thrive on it!
ENJOY! Valerie Watkins Publisher |
CORRECTION to last week's air show article: The Air Show was not sponsored by the Exchange Club. Vero Beach Air Show, Inc., a 501(c)3 charitable organization, is the sole sponsor of the air show. It took a lot of helping hands from three area exchange clubs: Indian River, Vero Beach and Treasure Coast and the Veterans Council of Indian River County, along with hundreds of volunteers, to bring that magnificent day to us all. Proceeds benefit all three clubs for prevention of child abuse.

DAN RICHARDSON
Another Local Hero!
I would like to thank so many FLASHERS who sent an email after our special Memorial Day issue! I ALWAYS love hearing from you and delighted in your comments on how our special Memorial Day issue rang home the true essence of Memorial Day. Pictured here is another photo of one of our local boys. Unfortunately it was caught in a technical glitch and did not make it to us in time for our special issue. So, Please allow me to now share Dan Richardson with you. He is pictured here with his Mom, Rita. He is a vet of Iraq and the "Restrepo" Army unit in Afghanistan which was one of the most dangerous outposts in Afghanistan.

HEALTH TIP
SUGAR IN YOGURT
If you think eating fruit flavored yogurt is healthy, you may want to think again. This week the Huffington Post reported that many yogurt brands have as much sugar as a 'Twinkie' or a candy bar. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), the maximum amount of added sugars you should eat in a day are:
- Men: 150 calories per day (37.5 grams or 9 teaspoons).
- Women: 100 calories per day (25 grams or 6 teaspoons).
One small container of yogurt may have as much as 27 or more grams. You're better off buying plain yogurt and adding the flavoring and fruit yourself.

A week from this Saturday is the final leg of Racing's Triple Crown: The Belmont Stakes. Once again, all eyes will be on the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner, California Chrome. Tim Kidd
|
Pack up the babies, grab the old ladies, Everyone goes... because from Louisville, Kentucky comes the charming
hooligan, Tim Kidd. Easily described as a monkey with ADHD who needs his Ritalin and a nonconformist through most of his youth, Tim's tumultuous relationship with authority developed early on. Tim's childlike exuberance and high octane fueled stage presence delivers a fast paced record of his life from an exceptionally funny point of view. A crowd favorite that is as unpredictable, as he is hilarious. Always on the edge but never vulgar. A powerhouse on stage with his quick wit, edgy material, and a unique outlook on life that is sure to keep the laughs coming!
At a young age J. Bliss always had a knack for capturing an audience's attention with some quick witted humor. J Bliss' comedic style is thought provoking and deals with everyday observations and personal experiences, which he chooses to find the humor in. His comedic craft started by his upbringing in South Jersey where he first got the hunger for comedy, but he first hit the comedy stage in Charlotte, NC. Since then he has been traveling up and down the east coast leaving them laughing and easily becoming a crowd favorite. Since his start he has opened for comedians like: Pauly Shore, Tony Roberts, George Willborn, DeRay Davis, Corey Holcomb, Alex Thomas, Rodney Perry, and Eddie Griffin. FLASH BEAUTY TIP OF THE WEEK
Sponsored by: Center for Facial Aesthetics
What You Should Know About Wrinkle Fillers
Injectable wrinkle fillers can give you a more youthful look for a fraction of what a traditional face lift costs. Most will fill lines and wrinkles in less than 30 minutes with results that can last from four months to more than a year. Injectable wrinkle fillers, unlike Botox injections that relax the muscle under a wrinkle, fill the line or crease with one of several different substances. As a result, the line or crease seems to have nearly disappeared. Call for a complimentary consultation to find out if fillers are right for you! WE LOVE OUR FLASHERS WHO DON'T KEEP US A SECRET! PLEASE SHARE US WITH EVERYONE!
|
FLASH CHUCKLE
A local priest and pastor stood by the side of the road holding up a sign that said, "The End is Near! Turn yourself around now before it's too late!"They planned to hold up the sign to each passing car.
"Leave us alone you religious nuts!" yelled the first driver as he sped by. From around the curve they heard a big splash. "Do you think," said one clergy to the other, "we should just put up a sign that says 'bridge out' instead?"

A PRODUCT WE LIKE REAL BACON BITS The small packages of "real bacon bits" can usually be found near the salad dressings, but they're good for many uses besides topping salads. If you don't want the mess of cooking bacon, they're good mixed in when scrambling eggs, sprinkled on a BLT sandwich, or added to vegetables like cabbage, yellow squash or green beans. There are several different brands, but make sure they say "real" on the label. |
A secret tip for our 'lady FLASHERS'. I had dinner tonight with a new friend and she is the genius behind this week's FLASH tip. Before giving yourself a manicure, soak your fingers in
vinegar for a few minutes. Let them air dry completely before painting. Your polish will now stay on longer and will not chip!

DID YOU KNOW?
WHY WE SAY "BLESS YOU" AFTER A SNEEZE
In ancient times, some people believed that a sneeze caused the soul to escape the body through. Saying "bless you" would stop the devil from claiming the person's freed soul. Others believed the opposite: that evil spirits use the sneeze as an opportunity to enter a person's body. There was also the misconception that the heart momentarily stops during a sneeze (it doesn't), and that saying "bless you" was a way of welcoming the person back to life. Actually, sneezing is a reflex action. It may be the sign of a cold or allergy. A sneeze also can be provoked by being outside in the sunlight or from smelling a strong odor. Still, we persist in the custom of saying "bless you" or "gesundheit," mainly out of habit and common courtesy.

The Sebastian Elks held their annual Memorial Day picnic at the lodge on May 26th. It was a blast! Wayne Snow, Chairman, and his committee planned a very busy afternoon for one and all with the lodge supplying hot dogs and hamburgers for over 200 attendees.
One of the hits of the afternoon was the dunk tank. There were also bounce houses, three-legged races, and egg toss contests for the kids (and the big kids, too). Music played all afternoon and was provided by "Entertainment by Chuck."
But the afternoon wasn't all fun and games. At three o'clock there was a minute of silence, the playing of "Taps" and Lee Greenwood's "God Bless The USA." Afterall, that is what Memorial Day is - a day to honor the men and women of the armed forces who gave their all for the greatest country in the world.
