editor's note poka-dotJolly June FLASHERS~

Although the first day of summer is noted on calendars as June 21st, I have no doubt that our FLASHERS can literally taste it already! Those days of summer smiles, longer sunshine, freer schedules, summer camps, family fun, exciting excursions, BBQ's and friends are right around the corner. Its arrival is like the comfort and anticipated visit from a lifelong family friend that we've looked forward to all year long.  'Ya' just 'gotta' love summertime!

What are your plans this summer? Why not explore a new hobby. It might sound like an exaggeration, but having a hobby can change your life! Finding an activity that is fun and a little challenging can keep your mind active and those good endorphins flowing. It has been proven that hobbies help with self-esteem, self-confidence and stimulates the part of the brain associated with creativity and positive thinking. Summertime is the perfect time to explore the possibilities and you will never again be at a loss when asked what do you like to do?  If you just search for possible hobbies on the computer a litany of suggestions will emerge. Here is one such list that I found. Get exploring FLASHERS! There's a whole world out there and new things to be discovered and enjoyed. We live in a culturally rich community where many such interests can be explored in a group or club setting....the additional benefit,,,,new friends!

Gardening?....How about the Garden Club of IRC.  Book Club? We have the Vero Beach Book Center's Bookies. Cycling? Try one of the rides with Vero Cycling. Do you like helping others?  Volunteer with one of our incredible non profits. Here is a partial list. Want to explore your artistic side?  Join the Art Club or check out the classes at the Vero Beach Art Museum (Classes begin on June 16th). Interested in Bridge?  We have an incredible Bridge Club. Politics?  For the Republicans or Democrats. Expand you mind and take an adult education course. There is even a woodcarving group that meets every Thursday at the Moose Lodge. The possibilities are endless and you have NO excuse to be bored!  If you have an interest and can't find an outlet....Email me and I will try to connect you. Need some inspiration...Here is a story of a 91 year old woman who just finished the San Diego marathon! The kicker? She started running at the age of 72 proving it is just never too late to start something new! :)

Lastly, if you missed last week's FLASH, then you need to know that we are taking some time this summer to explore possibilities for FLASH. We will therefore be publishing every other week. Not to worry.... You won't miss a thing because our calendar will continue to display upcoming events for two weeks at a time. If you opted in for our FLASH Deals, you will also continue to receive those mailings and I will include our 'Community Calendar' with those emails as well. See you in two weeks! :)

70TH ANNIVERSARY - D-DAY!
June 6, 1944
Watch this video of the progression of WWII
Seventy years ago tomorrow, 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified French coastline to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. This historical aggression is an event that changed the course of WWII and is referred to as the event that 'Saved The World!' General Dwight D. Eisenhower called the operation a crusade in which "we will accept nothing less than full victory." More than 5,000 Ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the D-Day invasion, and by day's end on June 6, the Allies gained a foothold in Normandy. The D-Day cost was high -more than 9,000 Allied Soldiers were killed or wounded -- but more than 100,000 Soldiers began the march across Europe to defeat Hitler. Click Here to see a virtual progression of WWII. It identifies the different military branches' efforts with moving icons. It's a fascinating video and one that all WWII buffs will enjoy viewing. (excerpt from Army.Mil Features)

FLASH BEAUTY TIP OF THE WEEK

Sponsored by: Center for Facial Aesthetics

A HEALTHY SUN KISSED TAN WITHOUT THE RISKS

There's no such thing as a healthy tan unfortunately. The UVA and UBV rays from the sun cause the skin to prematurely age and can cause skin cancer. At Center for Facial Aesthetics we know the most important part of skincare is sunscreen. We remind our patients to apply sunscreen daily even on cloudy days because the damaging rays can penetrate through the clouds. Fortunately there is a fantastic product you can use for a natural looking healthy sun kissed look. It's called Tantasia by Jane Iredale. Tantasia is a self tanner that has unique ingredients that work with your own melanin to produce a tan that is yours alone. Tantasia is easy to use and is streak free. Your tan builds evenly and gradually over time. Tantasia has a pleasant invigorating fresh fragrance with no after-smell. Its sensitivity tested so it can be used on your face or body. The results are a natural healthy sun kissed tan without the risk of sun damage.

JUNE 13 & 14
~THIS WEEKEND - FRIDAY AND SATURDAY~
A FUN FATHER'S DAY GIFT!

Hailing from Queens, New York, Dougie Almeida spent most of his adult life as a corporate presenter for one of the largest financial planning firms in the country.  His specialty was taking lifeless insurance presentations and transforming them into works of comic art.  In his spare time, he fought as an ISKA Heavyweight Muay Thai Kick boxer, retiring at 10-0.  So, what do you get when you cross an inventive corporate executive with a retired kick boxer?  A stand-up comedian, of course! Winner of Improv's New Faces of Comedy, Miami's Comedy Idol, participant in  Laughing Skull Comedy Festival, Gilda's Laugh Fest, Cleveland Comedy Festival, Cape May Comedy Festival and the World Series of Comedy.

Shawn Banks was born in Alton, IL, a small city 20 minutes from St. Louis across the Mississippi River. Known for witty observations and dead-on impersonations of many, Shawn has been exploding in comedy clubs and theatres across Florida and can often be seen performing at Hollywood's Laugh Factory, Comedy Store and Comedy Union. Shawn took his Family-Fun humor and auditioned and landed a Stand-Up spot on the "Tom Joyner Sky Show" at the WALT-DISNEY Milk-House. The show is also heard by over 10-million listeners across the country daily. Shawn enjoys and has great pride in his versatility of being able to perform both mainstream and urban audiences, as well as clean corporate humor.

                                     WEEKEND PROJECT FOR YOU!
This is a fun project that is inspirational, summery and earth friendly. Recycle old wine bottles and transform them into trendy vases. They will make a perfect hostess gift for those BBQ's you will go to this summer. So make some extras!
Directions:
1. Paint wine bottle with a primer that will help your paint adhere. I love X-I-M Primer. It's an oil base primer that adheres to the slickest services and allows for acrylic details.
2. Select your base color and paint away.
3.  Paint your chalkboard with chalkboard paint.
4. Wrap and glue twine on the bottom of bottle upward     two inches and again on the neck of the bottle.
5. Use chalk and display the message of choice that can be changed on a whim.
6.  ENJOY!

  TODAY'S CHUCKLE

Four newly acquainted widows were praising their late husbands. When the fourth lady spoke up, she said, "All four of my husbands were wonderful men. The first one was very wealthy and very generous in sharing his wealth with me. The second one was an actor. We had a wonderful life together, - attending red carpet events and meeting exciting people. The third was a pastor. I learned so much about philosophy and religion from him. My last husband just passed away recently. He was an undertaker."

"Well, that's certainly an unusual assortment of men," one woman exclaimed.

"Not really," the fourth lady replied. "One for the money. -Two for the show. -Three to get ready. - And four to go!"

  FLASH TIP OF THE WEEK
Heading to the beach this summer?  Here is a tip that is helpful to know whether you have kids in tow or just taking a leisurely walk on the beach. Keep some baby powder in your car and rub it on sandy areas and feet.  The sand will come right off and you won't have to worry about messing up your car. :)
 FLASH VIDEO OF THE WEEK
In honor of the Belmont Stakes that will be raced this Saturday, here's Frank Sinatra singing his famous rendition of the official song of the Belmont, - NEW YORK, NEW YORK. (Is there anyone who doesn't love that song?!) Frank's son, Frank, Jr. will be singing it live right before the race. Coverage begins on NBC at 4:30 and post time is scheduled for 6:52.

BLANKET STORAGE TRICK

Now that our chilly nights are over, it's time to store those bulky blankets, so here's an idea we like: Fold them in half and lay them flat between the box spring and the mattress of the beds that will be using them next winter. You should rotate your mattress at least every six months anyway, so now you

accomplish two things! WOW! The amazing things you learn in FLASH!

  RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Hmmm? I just realized that our recipes for the past few weeks have been desserts. Does that tell you anything about my 'sweet tooth'?

Chocolate Dipped Peanut Butter Cookies

Yield: about 30 cookies

Ingredients:

1 cup unsalted butter; softened
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
1/2 cup chunky peanut butter
2 eggs
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1 cup quick oats

2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
½ cup chopped peanuts

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

2. In a large bowl, cream together butter, brown sugar, white sugar, and peanut butter until smooth. Beat in the eggs one at a time until well blended add in vanilla and mix to combine.

3. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, and salt; stir into the creamed mixture. Mix in the oats until just combined. Drop by tablespoons onto ungreased cookie sheets.

4. Bake for 12-14 minutes, or until just lightly browned around the edges. Cool for 5 minutes on cookie sheet then transfer to cooling rack.

5. Once cookies are completely cooled, melt the chocolate chips in the microwave on medium power. Stir every 30 seconds until the chips are melted and smooth.

6. Working over the bowl of melted chocolate, spoon the chocolate over 1/2 of each cookie. Allow the access chocolate to flow back into the bowl. Sprinkle the wet chocolate with chopped peanuts and place on wax paper to harden.

SCENE AROUND TOWN
In 2013, Vero Beach Power Squadron (VBPS) members donated 13,575 hours and over $10,000 to activities that benefit all citizens of Indian River County. These activities include the Youth Sailing Foundation,  Boat Safety Exams, Boating Education, Lagoon Cleanup, Environmental Learning Center Support, Sheriff's Courtesy Marine Patrol, Cooperative Charting, Boating Safety, Boys and Girls Club Outings and others.  13,575 hours is the equivalent of seven full time county workers. If a monetary value is placed on this, it's over $400,000.

The photos were taken last month as VBPS volunteers took the youth from the Boys and Girls Club out fishing for the day.  Just one of the many volunteer activities of the VBPS.
