Hello FLASHERS!
I hope you are all enjoying the start to a wonderful summer! The days have certainly gotten longer and a lot hotter! I just returned yesterday from a couple of weeks in the North Carolina mountains that postponed the summer heat and allowed me to enjoy nighttime temperatures in the 60's! JUST PERFECT! Days were filled with hiking, kayaking, painting, shopping and visiting with friends and family. Those special summer moments are what I cherish the most. This was the first summer in the mountains that none of our children were able to join us. Things are different now that they are all out of college and working.  I did enjoy 'texting' one daughter continuously throughout the US world cup game! She was a big soccer player throughout her school years and the love of the game is something we continue to share. I suspect we will have our thumbs in action again today when our 'magic' US team takes the field at noon against Germany! Go USA! That feeling of patriotism plays in quite nicely with our 4th of July issue this week. Since we are publishing every other week...This is our 4th of July issue. You will find all kinds of ideas, suggestions, recipes, and events to help you plan for a fun and memorable 4th! Holidays are always the perfect time to start a tradition! It's never too late and in just a few years you will have created something you and the family and/or friends will look forward to. It doesn't have to be anything grand. It can simply be to gather some friends and family together this year. As the years roll by, you can add new aspects to the new tradition. Lastly. If you have been a subscriber for a while...You undoubtedly know that I have a soft spot for our military and I am a flag waving patriot. I encourage every FLASHER to fly a flag and if you find yourself on Ocean Drive; pop into 'I'll Never Tell' and buy a flag pin for only $12. One hundred percent of the proceeds will benefit the efforts of our Military Moms Prayer Group and they do such great things!

Enjoy your weekend FLASHERS and Happy 4th!

Carl "Cee-Jay" Jonesis one of the hottest, freshest comics to hit the comedy scene. Cee-Jay is wild and totally outrageous, with a style of comedy that is all his own. His stage presence, quick wit,
high energy and rapid fire delivery keeps his audiences laughing non-stop from the moment he hits the stage. In Cee-Jay's world nothing is off limits. He gives you his perspective on how he sees the world, and when he does...YOUR WORLD WILL NEVER BE THE SAME! He's appeared on BET's "Comic View" and Showtime's "At the Apollo." Don't miss your chance to see one of comedy's rising stars!

Trish's style of comedy is one part social satire, two parts personal pain and most parts attitude! Trish began performing as a way to survive Catholic school where early on, Sister Mary Joan could sense her sinful need to get laughs. After earning a B.A. degree from Florida State University in Theatre, Trish began her comedy career by performing daily at Universal Studios, and then moved to the Windy City to workshop with the legendary Del Close at Second City, The Annoyance and The Improv Olympics. Appearances in various film and television productions followed including: two episodes of "E.R.", film Return to Me,  "Chicago Hope," "Cupid," and "Early Edition".

PARTY IDEAS
.
Here is a clever way to organize utensils. Pick up
bandannas
at the local dollar store and place utensils in each one place before placing them in a mason jar that will double as your guests drinking glass.  It looks festive with just a little effort!

This is an easy centerpiece.  You can pick up festive plastic hats to use as containers for a summer pot of daisies. The best thing is...You can plant the flowers in your yard after the big event!

A burlap banner is not difficult to make and will roll out some celebratory
patriotism! Pick up some burlap and twine from a craft store and some small flags at the dollar store. Cut burlap squares to whatever size will best border your flags. You can either use a sewing machine to sew flags to burlap and burlap to the twine or you can use glue. It's up to you! :)  Then all that is left to do is to find the perfect spot to display you 'old glory' banner.

IT'S WATERMELON SEASON!

Now that fruit is shipped in from around the world, it seems that we can find any fruit during any month, but I miss the anticipation of "seasonal fruit." I remember looking forward especially to watermelon which didn't used to arrive in the super market until May. I think summer is still the time to find the best melons and they probably come from nearby. Florida and Georgia are two of the top five states for growing watermelons. Watermelons are 92% water which is good for hydration and they're very low in calories. Nutritionists have found they deliver a wide array of nutrients, vitamin and minerals for improving cardiovascular and bone health, nourishing your eyes, revving up your immune system and even lose body fat. FLASH 'FOURTH' TIP
.
Safe the forearm of those little patriots with this nifty little tip. Puncture a hole in the bottom of a plastic cup. Stick the sparkler in the hole for the child to reach in and hold. Light the sparkler and let the fun commence!
A FLASH FLAG CRAFT FOR KIDS

Materials:
Instructions:
Follow the pattern in the picture to help you thread the beads. Five of the ten safety pins will each have four blue beads inserted before the alternating red and white beads. The remaining five pins will only reflect the alternating red and white. Once all beads have been threaded, hook the bottom eye of each pin through the larger safety pin. If you have any trouble closing the pins once you have thread the beads, try using your metal nail file or screwdriver. Voila!  You have your flag pin finished and ready to wear!

                                     ANOTHER CRAFT - FLAG T-SHIRT
Tear off a large piece of foil or wax paper and insert it inside the shirt. This will prevent the paint you're adding to the front of the shirt from bleeding through. Cut strips of masking tape to tape off the lines for the flag. You might want to tape off the sides as well.  This will create a border for the young artists. Have children paint between the paint strips. (You can use acrylic paint).  Once the stripes have been painted you can paint the child's hand with an acrylic blue paint. Instruct that once the hand is placed on the shirt it can't be moved or it will smudge. Press down on the hand and then lift it straight up. Leave shirt to dry

  TODAY'S CHUCKLE

There was once a young man who, in his youth, professed his desire to become a great writer.

When asked to define great, he said, "I want to write stuff that the whole world will read, stuff that people will react to on a truly emotional level, stuff that will make them scream, cry, howl in pain

                              and anger!"

He now works for Microsoft writing error messages.

    SCENE AROUND TOWN

The numbers are in...According to Todd Howder, President, the Air Show this past spring raised approximately $100,000 for four local charities. This money will be divided equally and given to the Exchange Clubs of Indian River, Treasure Coast, and Vero Beach and to the Veterans Council of Indian River County.  The donations will enable these organizations to fund projects to help abused and neglected children and military veterans of Indian River County and the Treasure Coast. The show also donated a free ticket for admission to the show to every child enrolled in kindergarten through fifth grade in the county. The hundreds of volunteers, generous sponsors, and thousands of spectators joined forces to ensure one of the most successful events this county has ever seen. The next show is already being planned for 2016!
Pictured above: Jan J Binney, President Todd Howder, Laurie Connelly, and  Producer/Director  Rick Grissom after the Vero Beach Air Show.

The Rev. Jonathan Robbins and five additional members of St. Paul's Church recently returned from a mission trip to Belize City, Belize in Central America. The church partnered with Holy Sacrament Episcopal Church in Pembroke Pines, Florida to provide the Belizean community pediatric health care, construction projects, vacation bible school, and seminars on health and the Christian life.

Historic Dodgertown and The United Way worked together to make another spectacular community event a reality. The Jackie Robinson Celebration Game, held at Historic Dodgertown on April 15, brought in over $18,000 to support children and families in Indian River County. Over 4,000 spectators showed up to watch the Brevard County Manatees host the Lakeland Flying Tigers in spite of torrential rain as close as Sebastian and threatening storms. The weather over the stadium stayed dry, little leaguers marched around the field in uniform and stood with the professional players for the national anthem, Dodger Dogs were sold, there were raffles, contests, armbands and mascots. The lights came on to finish the game which was followed by a spectacular display of fireworks. It was everything you could want from Holman Stadium.

At their June luncheon The Original Welcome Wagon Club of Sebastian installed their new Board of Officers for 2014-2015.  After a short business meeting, members enjoyed a delectable lunch served by Culinary Capers in Vero Beach.  The new officers were installed following the lunch.

The 4th Annual Wheels & Keels Antique/Exotic Car & Boat Show was held on Saturday, April 26th at the picturesque Moorings Yacht & Country Club.  Over 700 visitors viewed the show and various sponsor exhibits.  The Wheels & Keels show raised $30,000 to benefit the Youth Sailing Foundation of Indian River County. Youth Sailing Foundation is an all volunteer nonprofit funded solely by donations. The program gets kids ages 8 through 18, outdoors - away from computers, cell phones and TV where they learn self-confidence, decision-making, and the ability to interact with others while learning to sail.

Bank of America generously donated $5,000 to the Hibiscus Children's Center "Career Pathways to Independence Program".   The check was presented to Hibiscus CEO Michael Waninger (holding check) from Bank of America representatives (L-R):  April Lesperance, Jensen Beach Banking Center Manager; Doug Sherman, Treasure Coast Market President; and Kevin Staten, Senior Vice President.
